Utah Gov: I'll Back Gay Rights Bills

Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. says he would support a legislative effort to provide some rights to gay and transgender individuals.

Huntsman was responding to a pair of Common Ground bills, backed by Equality Utah, the first of which would make it illegal to fire or evict someone for being gay or transgender. The other would establish a domestic partnership registry for inheritance and medical-decision making benefits.

The governor has also stated his support for same-sex civil unions, something opposed by other Republicans and 70% of Utah residents.

"We appreciate that the governor sees these are common-sense solutions to problems that Utahans are facing," Will Carlson, Equality Utah's public policy manager, told The Salt Lake Tribune Monday. "We'll take all the help we can get."

"It is important to respect the beliefs of others yet those same people you are defending from accountability do not respect my beliefs as a gay-affirming fundamentalist Bible-believing christian. What about my "freedom of religion?" "Not arguing with you, but I'm wondering why it's universally important to "respect the beliefs of others?" I respect the RIGHT of people to hold beliefs, as long as those beliefs don't do manifest, immediate harm. But really, why should I respect the belief of many fundamentalists that the Earth is a few thousand years old, when that's manifestly false? The LDS's belief that the Native Americans descended from Middle Easterners, though it's provably untrue? The Pope's belief that gay families are obstacles on the road to peace? Where does it end? Respecting the Christian Identity belief that non-Caucasians have no souls? Is it the "religion" thing? That we can ridicule those who think space aliens built the Pyramids, but not the Mormon belief that God is a former human living in the suburbs of the planet Kolob? Sorry, I know I come across as a disrespectful grouch, and I'm sure I'm missing something, but the Mormon cosmology seems damn near as silly to me as Scientology. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to spy on Elvis down at the mall.
