My inspiration: Hidden LBGT Community in the Military

I Joined the Impact because... I am a US Military Enlistee, and have been for a few years now. At first, I just needed a job, but having to dive back into the closet proved to be a lot harder than I thought. As I grew to tolerate the slander and discrimination the military allows, I began to build a fire inside. I, like 1000s of others in the mil., am tired of living a life in the shadows for fear of loosing our right to serve. I love the military and what is has done for me, but I equally hate the lawful predgidous that I have to build my life around. There are too many of us that are sorely treated and cast to the curb if found out. We sacrifice just as much and more to serve our country. We want to be here. But we want to be free to live and love as we wish, without jeopardizing our careers. This is why I am joining the impact. Cause without equal rights for all in the civilian sector, there's never going to be equality in the military. I will do what I can to contribute to the cause. The rusults of the next 4 years is going to make or break us. Let's do something about it now and bring the fire to the table!

With the fight for equality on the line, our success is going to change a lot of lives. So, say we win. What then? I want to put the message out there that there are thousands of military personnel in the LGBT community who are living in the shadow of a vicious law. "Don't ask, don't tell" may seem comparable to most in that, gays and lesbians are permitted to serve in the US military, but under the pretense that they are to remain discrete about their personal lives. Simple enough, maybe, but it hits harder than most would imagine. If EVER somebody learns about our identities, a simple accusation can cause our whole career to crumple from beneath us. We tread lightly, proud, not loud. Having to live day to day listening to the slander that the military allows, knowing we can say nothing to defend what's right, is just sickening. I'm here to represent the LBGTs that are hiding in the open. The men and women who sacrifice everything to defend the country we love, even if we are not entitled to the same freedom we fight for. I'm here to raise awareness of the discrimination that goes on, unseen by the rest of the nation. Equal rights for all! Civilian and military alike. Let's start today! Please feel free to ask questions. I'd be happy to satisfy as much as I can. I'm taking a big risk in this, but the hate has to stop! Spread the word! "PROUD, NOT LOUD, NOT FAIR!"
