The following is a recap of what was achieved on A DAY WITHOUT GAYS.
Our goal was to raise awareness that Gays and Lesbians are being denied full equality in this country, including the right to get married. On that note... On our Facebook site, we received 1 million impressions, signed up 250,000 participants and posted 20,000 comments. We were featured and/or interviewed by most of the national and local media, including ABC News, KABC, KNBC, KTTV, and many others. We were interviewed by most of the major radio networks, from CNN radio, NPR News, Air America, Pacifica and Sirius. We were mentioned throughout national and local press, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and the San Diego Chronicle. We had commentaries on CNN.com, PSAs appeared on Logoonline and we were featured in countless blogs across the web. This was always intended as a symbolic protest, our proverbial Boston Tea Party. We never expected to make a huge impact on businesses or the economy. That said, major restaurant chains informed their employees about the event, countless business shut down, tens of thousands of employees and students did not show up for work or school, and hundreds of teachers across the nation did not teach. In addition, countless individuals informed us that they called in sick, took vacation, closed their businesses, boycotted restaurants and cafes, and stepped off the grid. We were joined by many other individual organizers, including Sean Hetherington, Ryan Bauer-Walsh, Brock Ogletree, Jamie McGonnigal, and more. We were co-sponsored by other grassroots organizations, including Join the Impact, the Courage Campaign and BAMN. We were trying to make a difference. We believe we achieved that yesterday. We will not quit until the honeymoon. David Craig and Steve Holzer Co-organizers of A DAY WITHOUT GAYS

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to everyone for taking part in Dec. 10, whatever form that took. There is some mixed coverage of the event in the media and I thought it was important to share these thoughts:
1. The fact that there was some confusion of what exactly we should do that day does not reflect a long-term weakness of our movement. On the contrary. In one sense, it's good for the rank-and-file who make up a mass movement not to feel constricted by their leaders. Second, it reflects the healthiness of our movement, the fact that initiative is coming from below. The traditional gay rights organizations are not the only ones dominating the movement. And the fact that many thousands of people DID participate shows we ARE looking for every opportunity to act and win. 2. We were not going to have an ECONOMIC impact with our boycott the way immigrants are able to, simply because immigrants form the basis of our economy in a way that LGBT people don't. However, our goal was NOT simply economic: it was (1) to show the LGBT movement is inspired by another recent genuine mass movement, the movement for immigrant rights in spring 2006, and (2) to assert to our family, friends, and co-workers we ARE gay, asserting our equality and raising awareness - similar to the "coming out" campaigns promoted by Milk and others. 3. Next time, let's couple a national coordinated action with rallies. People are less capable of taking bold initiative when they feel they're asked to do so individually. We need to feel our power in numbers. When the Court hears legal arguments during the spring, let's mobilize thousands from across the state to rally at the Court and have an economic shutdown that day by LGBTs and our supporters. - Ronald Cruz, Berkeley Law student, an organizer with the antiracist group BAMN which organized rallies in the Bay Area to overturn Prop 8 and win the Dream Act. I re-read some of my posts. They do have a neg. vibe to them. This is how I got there (with out realizing):
October 15, 2008 - Maket goes down. "It's the housing bubble" Washinton, Wall-Street, and the Main Media" said. And they had compelling evidence to back up that claim. The thing that pisses me off: the housing bubble was simply the perverbial straw. I did did not look to far into it because I am a full time student and the election was right around the corner (GO-BAMA!). November 4, 2008 - Bittersweet. November 7, 2008 - I opend the JTI invite e-mail. I decided If no-one took the challenge with in 36 hours...I will do it. November 9, 2008 - SC sucks...no one anwsered the call. I launched a Massive internet campaign, took a week of off school (My professors were like...GO EVVIE!). 2 days later I finally got some help + excited Greenville and Columbia. November 15, 2008 - 320+ in Charleston, 150+ Columbia, +/-100 Greenville. 500 People in 6 days...not bad for SC. November 16, 2008 - I get a ton of comments and e-mails (good and bad). One big remark I got (from both sides) "it's the economy stupid." So I started digging. November 19, 2008 - I realized what has happend over the last 30 years may be the largest human rights violation ever. Think about our World. The top 1% has spent the last 30 years figuring out a way to embezzle money. It got so bad so fast because Bush and the Republican Congress ran wild...I can count Bush's veto's on my fingers and toes. World Debt - $55 Trillion Top Companies trading the Lions Share of the debt are going down. So, where is the $55 Trillion? This problem (thanks to Reagan and NAFTA) is World Wide. China is preparing a $2 Trillion bailout. I can't keep up with the bailouts that are flying through Congress. Other countires are giving bailouts...It still does not equil $55 Trillon.

I will be doing the gay without a gay, but a lot of people will find it unreasonable and just impossible to do. gay own companies can't afford a day of in this economy. And not all of us have the kind of job that we can take a day off, without getting fired. I am not sure what it will accomplish. I think every gay person and gay supporter should wear a pink t-shit or shirt to work (all day). it would make a point, without risking your job.

The SC JTI team will NOT be able to combat the backlash that you are making enevitable. Do none of you remember the 90's? Once Cali got what they wanted...the awarness stoped. Things got bad in the red states...then, over the years, creeped into the blue states until...BAM, California passes Prop 8.
What you do in California greatly effects the other States. Please don't forget that! If you think I am being alarmist...look at the comments from SC people regarding our protest coverage. It is bad...really bad. You (JTI) asked the world to "promote love and equality" in our cities. How is this spreading love and equality? Not spending money on 12/10 does not meet that end. Make up your mind...are you protesters or advocates of change through social awarness (which include peaceful protests)? You can't have your cake and eat it to. Please stop seporating yourself from America...it is irresponsible and will have lasting effects. NO ONE, even many GLBT members, can understand the benifit of messing with an unstable World Market. Not that you not spending money will "crash" an already "crashed" economy...it just looks like you don't care...and that is BAD...and flys in the face of your mission. Spend that money at GLBT friendly companies/buisness. That is a respomsible comprimise and will help premote your mission. Worried for the future of GLBT in her little red State, Evvie

NO civil rights movement has succeeded by people just being nice and playing along. At some point, they all had to TAKE A STAND, even if it risks offending people,
There are some things to think about if you are worried about the economy. Ask yourself, how much are your rights worth? When is the right time to take a stand? This will not destroy the economy. It’s a one-day strike with no picketing. Strikes and boycotts are more successful during economic downturns when people have less to lose. This form of non-violent protest is a very valuable tool (among many) in numerous civil rights movements, Most minorities who went on strike had A LOT more to lose. The Montgomery Bus Boycott went for an entire year. Even LGBT businesses need to take a stand and CLOSE FOR THE GAY. It's about unity. The call to action is Strike! Boycott! and PARTICIPATE! Volunteer for LGBT organizations, help build bridges to communities that don't support us, or Petition. Help organize signature drives to overturn anti-gay legislation, like Prop 8 or DOMA. FInally, if this type of protest still doesn't make sense to you, then we ENCOURAGE you to plan something that does rather than investing alot of energy in telling people why they shouldn't participate in this. There are over 250,000 people who have signed to participate and we want to encourage them, not give them second thoughts. We're building a powerful base from which we can promote other actions that might meet with your approval. In the end, we must demonstrate how serious we are and how important our rights and full equality mean to us. As Tony Kushner says, “The world always spins forward. We will be citizens. The time has come.” Keep up the fight! Stay strong.

And about those bailouts, where has that money gone? Intrest-free economists say we have yet to reach the bottom. Considering the Shopping season is going to be grimer than expected (black friday was it), we are going to be in for a ride come January. Considering how deep the political roots are in Washington, Obama, though he will try, will not be able to find all the tricks in the legeslation. If we can get 140,000,000 people to sign a plan that will work, he will have no choice but to implament it. That is us, you,me, Bible-Beating Bo, Ignorant Ann, Every Peorson that Voted November 4th, saying...this is what we want...NOW.
If it works (and I think it will), come January 20, 2009...JTI could be known by everyone as the gay Movement that saved the economy. If that happens, being Gay will be as American as Apple Pie. What do you have to loose? In less than two months this issue will be irrelevent. We will be so far under it will take at least a decade to recover...maybe alot longer (depending on what is done within the 1st week Obama takes office). I am glad I Joined the Impact. I am just really frustrated the GLBT as a platform (We have Done an Impressive Job in the Media) will not get a similar movement started for the economy. We picked "Stop the Outrage" because it is easy to remember and speaks to the cause (and so many others). Join the Impact is the same way. "Join the Impact to Stop the Outrage" would get us the 140,000,000 signatures. Millions of people watch the news. Only a fraction of those people care about Gay Rights enough to do something. 99.00% of News Watchers are pissed, confused, and motivated to act on the Economy...We just dont have a Platform :( So that is why I am frustrated. I am sorry if I did anything to offend you. I really want to stay in touch and fight the good fights with you. Look forward to Hearing from Ya'll (little Southern Flare), Evvie

cont from thread below...This is not a movement that would hurt any body who participates-in fact not spending money for 24hrs is actually a good thing if you don't really have it. We do realize there are tons of people both through out the world and in this country who do not have the luxury to spend money everyday of the week, right? It used to be once that as a business owner having a customer spend their money at your establishment was a privilege, now there are those who would like to tell us it our obligation! Remind the world, the country, this capitalist country that your dollars help it move and go forward and that it can’t expect you to help move it forward financially if it is pushing you back socially, civilly. How dare an economy expect a group of people to support it with their dollars and not give them those same civil, social, human rights! That is petty! A great person once said if you stand for nothing you fall for anything. I stand with “no gay for a day” because I refuse to fall into the trap of concerning myself with a country that only cares about my dollar forgetting the rest of me, the human in me! Be petty, stand for something…..

cont from thread below... Now I don't wanna reduce Obama's election and hope and believe personally that it was bigger then what I am about to say. A young man said the election was about color; that color being White voting black to keep green. Now the point of this statement is if they couldn't look at him as a man simply qualified they at least was able to look at their own situations and know that something has to change because what is happens to be hurting them where it matters. Many of us cared about genuine change, we believe in his message, some didn't and would never vote an Obama simply because he's not white, some could care less and voted on policy-belief-blah, blah, but some voted simply because it was a better choice for the pockets. In this sick world we live in money has become the end all began all. The fact that many of us can't even contemplate not spending money for a 24hr period! Come on this is insane! We're in an economic downturn, most of us can not afford the crap we spend our money on, we don't even need the crap we spend our money on!
Is it that hard to not have a latte from some company who gives you none of the profits? Is it that hard to purchase your needs the day before or wait till the next day! Have we forgotten how to make sandwiches! Petty is an entire economy expecting the lowest of the lows on the economic specter to carry those at the top on our backs. Petty is an environment where the only way truly out is to sell out and exploit those you once brushed shoulders with, petty is a billionaire expecting to take no pay cut as his business down sizes while expecting you the man who just lost his job to still spend the same amount as last year if not more! Petty is not believing in the power of our numbers and unity but instead fearing what will happen to those who could care less about your wellbeing. |

The fact that so many whom the cause would benefit are afraid already shows the impact the opposition has had on us. So long as we fear how the will "react" to us and not fear how our actions can move them to change we are loosing the battle. Fear is the great defeater in a many of movement. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King jr. were great leaders, with their death and the deaths of many other great leaders just like them came the stench of fear. Fear swelled up in ghettos, and kitchens, and country yards, and big cities, and small towns, and small houses around the nation. My generation may not be able to call it for this but we fear almost everything. We are perpetually stuck in this rut of fear. This election almost saw some of the worst fear ever. People who remember Kennedy and Martin and Malcolm were (thank god temporarily) afraid to vote for a black man out of fear of the opposition! |

I am writing this thread as an ally and as a BLACK WOMEN who understands struggle. Like both the call itself and the young man below said no movement has succeeded by the people just being nice. The fact is, when people oppose what you stand for they will find fault in all that you do. There is no such thing as "a right time to boycott" If businesses are doing well they can pretend not to need you. In fact LGBTQ businesses should be closing also (some else said this, just seconding). This is a movement about unity. All movements are about unity, and if we can’t see when and how to unify we will fight longer and harder then we have to. Cutting of the business life line parallels the life line cut off by so many dis-enfranchised due to proposition 8 and other bills like it.
This is far from a petty call; it is a very noble call. Not only should you being calling for a day with out a gay, but we should be reminding social groups every where that fight for any thing that “injustice any where is injustice every where!” Support matters in numbers and in a country where green rules we must hit them where it would possibly hurt most. This is not a cut your nose to spite your face fight, it is make sure that the bully in the playground will not get the best of you the rest of your life battle. |

But I say, DON'T penalize and antagonize local businesses (many of whom support us) at a time when the economy is hurting bad - and lots of people are struggling to survive economically through the holidays. President-elect Obama iz doing everything he can to get the U.S. economy back on tract - let's support him in that. A boycott right now will be viewed by many as petty, mean-spirited and pointless (not to mention counter-productive). Let's REWARD those companies who support us and, OK, stay away from those who don't -- but a wholesale boycott of everybody is just silly and will justifiably make many people very hurt and angry. We're already in a bad light in the media for adopting some of the same tactics that the right-wingers displayed suring the election, and I for one, do NOT want to be like them. Let's try to understand where they are coming from and place ourselves on a higher plane. When Prop 8 is overthrown by the courts, we want people to still be saying that we were discriminated against, not that we played the same dirty game against those who disagree with us.

Backdoor boycotts is on JTI site page. On Dec. the 10th. spend you $ at glbt frendly companies. You will get yur same message across without further harming an already volitile economic situation.
You will be hurting those that support you (including yourself) anf further pushing away those that are against your fight for equal rights. The DOW is just over 7500 points right now. The holiday season is going to put us further in the hole (based off of consumer spending projections). What cut off your nose to spite your face? If you vow to only buy from glbt stores you will be making your point without further aggravating an unstable market. Please take my word for it, or take time out of this fight (like 2 hours) to look at whats going on. It is bad. I remember my Grandfathers Great Depression stories. I dont want to go through that and I dont want to raise a family though that...do you? Please be mindful of the big picture. I am not sure puninshing the economy to make a point at the expense of yourself and EVERY American will help you. But "spending glbt" just might (and help those companies, like Whole Foods, a MUCH NEEDED economic boost! With love and respect, etharmon

I... really would rather just walk around the shopping mall with a sign or something. Or maybe a sticker? I'd say a shirt or one of those white ribbons, but... that doesn't work in the winter. Maybe it it's warm enough I'll tie one around my finger or something. A glove? But who's going to ask about that?
Although by this time I probably don't have enough time to work up the nerve to do it. I haven't even put in for the day off yet. You know what site's pretty good for volunteer opportunities? Idealist.org. I think it's .org. Doesn't categorize organizations by whether they are gay-friendly or not, of course. Only way you can sure of that is if they're actually a gay organization.

I'm one of the DWG administrators, working on the PR angle of this event. We'd like to identify any local store/company, etc in major US cities that might be closing its doors for the day on Dec 10 in support of Day Without a Gay. If you know one of those stores or are one of those store owners -please reach out to us as we'd like to thank you for your support and work with you further on this. (either post here, the dwg website or facebook) We're considering having a few of these local establishments available to any media inquiries we get - it will provide a great visual of a store closed and the local store owner talking about why (and don't worry, we will provide some media training). We're also working on signs that businesses can put in their windows - see the DWG site for more info on that.
Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

I don't agree with calling in "gay", as gay is not an affliction like a cold. I agree with attempting to get the day off to volunteer, however, if it doesn't work, to FORCE it to happen would have no integrity.
I am all for a financial boycot, however. In California, where we have a multi-million dollar defecit, the majority of voters said no to equal marriage. Obviously, selling marriage licenses to gays isn't important to most voters, so why should ANY of our money???

While I am not a part of the GLBTQ community I support your rights 100% and will help in the simple ways I can. That being said as a Mexican I like others find this plan ridiculous. After being impressed with your ideas, especially the postcard one, I will admit to laughing at this one. I wish you luck and success with this plan but can not support support you on it. I really sincerely hope this one doesn't come back and "bite you" in a bad way.
