For our February event, JTI is teaming up with Marriage Equality USA on Freedom to Marry Day (02/12/09) Marriage Counter Actions

About Freedom to Marry Day

Freedom To Marry Day - Join the ImpactOn National Freedom to Marry Day, Thursday, February 12, 2009, at local marriage counters in cities all over the country, same-sex couples will request marriage licenses at their local County Clerk's Offices to raise awareness of the harms and impact that the inability to marry causes on their families. This national event is hosted yearly by Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) and this year they have asked Join the Impact for our help to make this their largest Marriage Counter Action yet! .:more:.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Please help us lend support to Marriage Equality USA as we draw national attention to the many committed couples who are not afforded the right to marry. We ask that JTI organizers reach out to their local chapters and member organizations and offer support in making this event a success!

>> Click here to a complete list of MEUSA locations (by states) and other critical information!
>> Click here to find JTI cities that will be hosting events where MEUSA is not

Marriage Equality USA chapters and member organizations are eager to hear from you and get your help. In those cities where an MEUSA does not exist, we ask that JTI organizers step up (once again) and help us bring this event to their city for the first time. MEUSA has provided us with a national toolkit which will help us ensure that this event gets the attention it deserves as we join forces for one large impact!

"Marriage Equality USA started the Marriage Counter Action/Get Engaged for Marriage Equality in 2001. This year, we invited Join the Impact to join us, and we are very excited to be working with them and look forward to a large turnout. We do this annual direct action during Freedom to Marry week to make marriage discrimination visible, it forces our local clerks to have to look us in the eye, see our children, and enforce a discriminatory and unjust law at their counter – it moves everyone who witnesses this sad, but powerful event and gives us the opportunity to tell our stories and show that we live in every community and want to honor and protect our families like everyone else." - Jordan Palmer, Vice President of Development & Organizational Relationships for Marriage Equality USA.

MEUSA-SLO San Luis Obispo County Freedom to Marry Action 2/13/2009 SLO Clerk 0 Feb 5 2009, 7:27 PM EST by MEUSA-SLO

Marriage Equality USA - SLO Chapter is seeking unmarried couples,
lesbian, gay, or transgender, who wish to marry, but did
not do so during the legal window last Summer and Fall. On Friday,
February 13, we will visit the San Luis Obispo County Clerk's Office,
with the press in tow, to ask for marriage licenses. We want to
introduce San Luis Obispo County to the human stories of these couples,
and to show that the ban on gay marriage is hurting real, live people in
this community.

We will, of course, be denied these licenses at this time. Our goal is
to bring the reality of this discrimination once again to the forefront
of local attention.

And, in case our straight allies are feeling left out, we also invite
you to join us as supporters. If you also wish to marry, it would
certainly help us to document the inherent unfairness if straight
couples were to be granted licenses while LGBT couples watch.

If you are one of the fortunate 18,000 same gender couples that did get
married legally between June and November of last year, we encourage you
to join us for Freedom to Marry Day and thank our wonderful County
Clerk-recorder, Julie Rodewald and her staff for being so accommodating
to us all during the time that many of us married.

This event will take place at NOON on Friday, February 13, in
concurrence with many other California counties. Couples should be
willing to speak to the media during the event. It will be a non-violent
event. Of course you may invite members of your family to observe.

Please drop me a note ASAP if you are excited to participate. Email
