| Gainesville, Florida's Response to the upholding of Proposition 8 in California. |
Victory In Gainesville March, 2009 (GAINESVILLE, FL) Gainesville members of Join The Impact joined with Equality Florida and other with local leaders in Gainesville and fair-minded people across the state and nation in celebrating today's decisive victory over discrimination and fear embodied in Gainesville Charter Amendment 1. Voters rejected the amendment by a vote of 58% to 42%. If passed, Charter Amendment 1 would have repealed existing civil rights protections for Gainesville's gay and transgender community. For over a year, backers of the amendment have waged a fear-based campaign filled with outright lies and media campaigns that dehumanized gay and transgender people. Specifically, these extremists drew a target on the backs of transgender people with bigoted messages intended to instill fear in the hearts of Gainesville citizens. Led by Equality Is Gainesville's Business: Gainesville's Join The Impact members and a coalition of local, state and national organizations worked together to stop discrimination from being legalized in Gainesville. The sweeping language of the ballot initiative, imported to Florida by a far right conservative group in Michigan, would have also prohibited the City of Gainesville from ever providing nondiscrimination protections beyond those listed in the Florida Civil Rights Act. "Supporters of Charter Amendment 1 waged a campaign that blatantly lied to voters about the protections Gainesville has provided transgender citizens." said Joe Saunders EQGB campaign manager. "By targeting transgender people, proponents of Charter Amendment 1 have proven the need for inclusive anti-discrimination laws. Voter's embraced Gainesville's anti-discrimination laws tonight when they rejected Amendment 1.""This is a local victory but it's significance reaches across our state and our nation. Those pushing Amendment 1 are part of a national effort to repeal LGBT protection in communities across the country," said Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality Florida. "This victory sends a strong signal that we will not allow extremists to turn back the progress we have made to secure equality for everyone." The local team waged a strong grassroots campaign reaching voters and unmasking the real human impact of the proposed amendment. "Today Gainesville voters showed that they value the rights of all citizens," said EQGB Chair and Gainesville City Commissioner Craig Lowe. "They have rejected the politics of fear and instead chose to retain the values that make our city such a beautiful place. Today, our voters showed their true character by emphasizing that, in Gainesville, every person matters." A broad array of organizations came out to publicly oppose Charter Amendment 1. These organizations include: the Join The Impact-Gainesville, the Anti-Defamation League - Florida, the ACLU of Florida, Equality Florida, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Center for Transgender Equality, Lambda Legal, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Organizations United Together (O.U.T.), UM (University of Miami) for Equality, Florida Association of Planned Parenthood Affiliates, Florida NOW, Gainesville Area NOW, Judy Levy NOW PAC, Alachua County Democratic Party, Alachua County Green Party, Alachua County/Gainesville League of Women Voters, Alachua County NAACP, Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce, Gainesville Area AIDS Project (GAAP), Gainesville Commission on the Status of Women, Human Rights Council of North Central Florida, Interweave, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville, North Central Florida Central Labor Council, Pride Center of North Central Florida, Social Justice Council of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville, Trinity Metropolitan Community Church, United Church of Gainesville Social Concerns Committee, University of Florida Students for Change, Students for a Democratic Society @ UF, Wild Iris Books and Wild Words Café, University of Florida Faculty Senate, University of Florida Presidential LGBT Concerns, and University of Florida Student Senate. VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT ONE MARCH 24, 2009 Here is a picture of some of the people who came out to Protest the upcoming Proposed City Charter Amendment 1. This amendment if passed removes civil rights protections for GLBT people within City limits. The City really needs to rethink going backwards a number of steps in this Civil Rights issue. Until now the City of Gainesville has been a leader in granting protection. Unfortunately it has been one of the cities in this country that has been chosen to be targeted by Right Wing Moralists to quietly chip away at rights being afforded to their targeted hate group: Gays, Lesbians, Bi and Transgendered people. | Gainesville's February 21 Rally Against Proposed City Charter Amendment 1 that will take Civil Rights Protection away from LGBT Persons within City limits.

| White Knot because everyone should be able to tie the knot.
November 26, 2008, 12:00 pm Another Cause, Another RibbonBy Brooks Barnes The fight against AIDS has the red ribbon. Cancer has, among other things, the yellow Livestrong bracelet. So perhaps it was inevitable that the campaign to legalize gay marriage would get its own fashion accessory: a snippet of white ribbon tied into a knot. The entertainment industry and celebrities — gay friendly but also a group that rarely turns down a ride on good bandwagon — are already jumping on board. At the recent premiere of the movie “Twilight” about two dozen of the knotted ribbons could be seen dangling from designer bags and pinned to suit lapels. Celebrities like Ricki Lake, Lucy Lawless (a.k.a. “Xena: Warrior Princess”) and T.R. Knight (of “Grey’s Anatomy”) have been photographed wearing them. The knots were created two weeks ago by a Los Angeles gay marriage advocate as a response to Proposition 8, which repealed the right for gay men and lesbians to marry in California. Frank Voci, whose primary job is running a consultancy for interactive media companies, said he got the idea after protests died down. His ultimate goal: to use a Web site (whiteknot.org) to recruit people sympathetic to the cause in less liberal locales. “We needed a symbol, something to keep the conversation going,” he said. What is it/How to explain it:Here is some language from WhiteKnot.org you can use... TheWhite Knotis the symbol for marriage equality. It takes two traditional symbols of marriage—white and tying the knot—and combines them in a simple way to show support for the right of gays and lesbians to marry. All loving couples deserve the same legal rights, benefits, and respect that civil marriage bestows. Visibility is the goal.Whether you are gay or straight, please show your support by wearing the knot and telling people why you are wearing it. It may seem like a small thing, but imagine the white knot gaining the pervasiveness and instant recognition of the AIDS Ribbon. Wear your white knot to work, to school, to your place of worship. Celebrities will be wearing white knots down red carpets this awards season. Together, we will keep the topic at the top of people's minds and keep the conversation going.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Impact-Florida will hold a peaceful and respectful demonstration and candlelight vigil outside of Florida Governor Charlie Crist and Carole Rome's wedding and reception.
Governor Crist first stated he believed in a "Live and Let Live" attitude when speaking about Amendment 2. However, he then became an outspoken proponent of Amendment 2, which passed by a margin of only 1.9%. The vague and ambiguous wording of this amendment could go much further than promised. It could adversely effect domestic partners benefits of both heterosexual and gay Floridians. DATE: December 12, 2008 PHASE #1: Demonstration Outside Wedding Ceremony TIME: 6 P.M. (Although the Wedding is planned for 7 P.M. Participants are asked to arrive no latter than 6:00 P.M..)
