Getting the Word OutThis is a featured page

Wondering how to get the word out about your rally? Here are some tips on how to get prepped for Saturday. Stay tuned to this page for updates all week.

  1. Find out if you need permits to rally or march. Get in touch with your local LGBT organization—if anyone would know, they would. If that fails, contact an ally in government (a gay friendly politician)
  2. Wondering if anyone will make it to your rally? Here are some tips on how to gauge/manage interest:
    1. Create a Facebook page, a Google or Yahoo group for communication within your city
(Keep in mind that- amazing as it may be- not everyone is on Facebook or will sign up just to get the info...)
    2. Add a thread to your city's page on this site.
    3. Make sure that your facebook, myspace, yahoo or google group is advertised properly on the state and city pages of this site
  3. Double up. Visit your city's page and pair up with other organizers to make sure that your event details are squared away.
  4. Contact local papers, blogs, anyone that will tell our story. Check out an example press release here.
  5. Know a celebrity or how to get to one? Contact them, their publicist, anyone.
  6. Remember...these are peaceful protests—our opponents know about us and they may show up with a counter protest. Take this as an opportunity to engage with them respectfully—let's not make it a reason for people to defend themselves against us. Let’s have a solid conversation. Eventually we’ll win.
  7. Collect contact info!!! Print many copies of this form and bring clipboards!
  8. Video Video Video! The presence of video cameras at events can help prevent violence, and in the event of criminal activity they can help identify people involved. Get video tips here.

A few other things to note:
  • The sticks for picket signs can be no thicker than 1/4 inch.

Thanks. That was a conversation I have been having in different circles and I think that is REALLY important to note. If we are fighting for equality, we are fighting for ALL, not just ourselves.
