LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FOR EQUALITY | DECEMBER 20, 2008 | 5PM
WHAT IS IT?
On December 20th, we ask that you join us again for a nation-wide demonstration that will make an impact on the private sector. Candlelight vigils will be held at commercial centers in cities across the country in remembrance of the rights that once were for 18,000 marriages, and in honor of the rights that one day will be again - for EVERYONE.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Please take to your local commercial district at 5PM--be it a shopping mall, outdoor financial center, you name it.
  • This will be a peaceful demonstration in the spirit of the holidays.
  • We'll dress alike: make or buy a "Second Class Citizen" t-shirt.
  • This will be the culmination of our National Food Drive for Equality event (see below for details)
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

  • Hosting peaceful candlelight vigils
  • We will stay silent unless asked a question, we will not yell, instigate, or bare signs. Instead, we will let our shirts do the talking and our candles pay our respects.Bring candles (battery powered if you'll be huddling inside).
  • Singing and/or silence encouraged...chanting is not....keep it peaceful and in the holiday spirit.

Come to the Calder Plaza Saturday Night for a Candle Light Vigal and peaceful protest to let our community know we are not SECOND CLASS CITIZENS and deserve the protection of the law when it comes to equal rights.

Those of you that are artistic please look at the posters that are on this site, and construct what you will and bring them with you. Everyone please bring a candle as well.

The planned time is 7:00pm. this does not coincide with the national time of 1:30 for Eastern Standard Time. However it is felt the time later in the evening would allow for a peaceful more dramatic show of support.

NOTICE: There will be two events today, one at the NATIONAL time and one at 7:00pm. Please remember this is a peaceful rally. Don't bring your hate!

Grand Rapids, in the past few days we have seen:

Proposition 8 in California taking away legal rights of Gays and Lesbians to marry through vote of the people. By "Church Leaders" of the Church of Latter Day Saints soliciting the members to send in excess of 20 Million Dollars to the effort to pass a consitutional amendment.
Marriage bans in Arizona and Florida btw Rich DeVos organization in Florida was instrumental in this effort to!
Gay Adoption Ban in Arkansas (where are the kids to go now?) Will the church take them in?

And in Michigan, not only are Marriage and Civil Unions constitutionally banned, but:
We do not have hate crimes protection
We do not have safe schools laws
We do not have comprehensive anti discrimination protection
HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment is seriously underfunded

It's time to stop putting our hopes into someone else's efforts. We have the opportunity to come together as a Community, a State, and a Nation

Hi all,

I'm sure you have been keeping up on the issues being posted on 'Join the Impact" All have been well intentioned unfortunately some have been received with little enthusiasm.

It's no secret times are tough, but we are tougher. Many of us have had to live with fear, rejection, depression, health issues and just plain hate but we have survived, which goes a long way in showing our resilience. Our fight is long from over, but that's not to suggest we sit back and wait. With the election of a new President, and the promises he made to our population, it's time we keep up the voice.

With this writing we have missed the national day of gathering signatures to keep our voices at the forefront of our march to equality. BUT that doesn't . mean that we quit. There is always time to write our representatives in Congress. Our congress people respond to many voices, we can be heard, we must let them know we are out here and expect them to do what we have elected them to do, REPRESENT US, so take the time to write. We have a common goal and that Goal is EQUALITY FOR ALL.

I have enclosed the link to the open letter to President Elect Obama to be delivered to him on Inauguration day by Join the Impact.

I think this is a good effort and one that will make a difference, but he must know we are out here.

As for a get together what are your thoughts?

* Would you like to see something like this?
* Where would you like it to be?
* Do you have a place available?
* What time, day of the week or date would be best?

I look forward to your thoughts on this.

In Solidarity I am,

Patrick Irish

I understand and share the frustration and anger queer folk feel with the religious right. Please remember that all churches are not fighting against gay rights. Some of them like mine, the United Church of Christ, are fighting FOR gay rights. I hope clergy pasotrs, rabbis and imams) will atend the vigil tomorrow night and make themselves visible with a collar, stole, etc. as a sign of support in the church community.
