LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FOR EQUALITY | DECEMBER 20, 2008 | 5PM
WHAT IS IT?
On December 20th, we ask that you join us again for a nation-wide demonstration that will make an impact on the private sector. Candlelight vigils will be held at commercial centers in cities across the country in remembrance of the rights that once were for 18,000 marriages, and in honor of the rights that one day will be again - for EVERYONE.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Please take to your local commercial district at 5PM--be it a shopping mall, outdoor financial center, you name it.
  • This will be a peaceful demonstration in the spirit of the holidays.
  • We'll dress alike: make or buy a "Second Class Citizen" t-shirt.
  • This will be the culmination of our National Food Drive for Equality event (see below for details)
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

  • Hosting peaceful candlelight vigils
  • We will stay silent unless asked a question, we will not yell, instigate, or bare signs. Instead, we will let our shirts do the talking and our candles pay our respects.Bring candles (battery powered if you'll be huddling inside).
  • Singing and/or silence encouraged...chanting is not....keep it peaceful and in the holiday spirit.

Organizers Still Needed
Organizing is easy, but if you don't have an organizer in your city, get a group of 5-10 friends together, print out the Light Up the Night Holiday Cards, and head to your local mall and start passing them out. Don't forget to keep count of how many cards you passed out. There will be a place to report the numbers soon!

Harrisburg Capitol Building: 3rd & State Streets.

Please join us as we protest Proposition 8 in Harrisburg at the Capitol Building on Sunday, November 23rd. This is truly an attack on equality in this country and thus the liberties of honest people must be protected and reclaimed. This is unprecedented in that for the first time a minrotiy group, who has finally won their rights in a state, have had them taken away by the Majority!

Please bring your picket signs, your banners, anything to protest. Many people will also be wearing "Gay? Fine By Me" shirts.

There will be several speakers and possibly groups coming from outside the state to help support the cause! So get excited, prepared, and get the word around! We will no longer tolerate being treated as second class citizens!

I cannot stress enough how we as Americans, from all walks of life, need to band together in solidarity to show our support for the overturn of Proposition 8 and the anti-adoption legislation. For the first time in American history we have seen the majority take away several civil rights, which in no way could be known as constitutional. So I urge you, no demand that you as moral citizens to help correct this wrong that has been imposed upon us. Inequality anywhere is inequality everywhere! Please be aware that there will be a counter protest organized by the American Family Association. Although their alert on their webpage currently has the wrong date, I urge you to be aware and be prepared. This will be a peaceful protest, and we will NOT TOLERATE any slurs or scapegoating of any type. Do not give into the scare tactics that any of the counter protesters will try to impose on us. No one ever attained their rights by being scared or by giving into hate. As Mahatma Ghandi once said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." We must and will fight hate with compassion! I hope to see you all there, and hope that you are all excited! If you have any questions please e-mail me at sheridan@susqu.edu .

Some chant ideas:

Love not Hate Repeal Prop 8.
2468 love does not discriminate.
What do we want? Equal Rights When do we want them? Now.

If you have any more feel free to e-mail them to me.

Chan

I am very disappointed that the Harrisburg area LGBT community can't even participate in an event of such great importance. I am convinced more than ever that the LGBT community in this area just doesn't care.
