Local protestors are voicing their outrage over what they're calling a hate crime against a gay Spanish Springs student and his friend. Their allegations are shocking and the investigation is slightly surprising. "They're both shaken up. Staying at home, laying low." says Nicole Bedera. She's a Spanish Springs High School student and member of the Gay-Straight Alliance. Other students with the Gay-Straight Alliance say two Spanish Springs High School students were attacked by their peers because one of them is gay

Eleven gay bars in Seattle were sent letters Tuesday threatening ricin attacks — in what some are describing as a hate crime. The anonymous letters say, "I have in my possession approximately 67 grams of ricin with which I will indiscriminately target at least five of your clients. ... I expect them to die painfully while in hospital." A 12th letter was sent to the alternative weekly The Stranger, according to its Web site. That letter says the paper should be "prepared to announce the deaths of approximately 55 individuals."

Attack on man outside gym-lounge may be hate crime
Police say a 50-year-old man was critically injured in an attack with a bottle outside a Salt Lake City lounge and gym that reputedly caters to the gay community -- and that may make it a hate crime case. The victim told police that he left the 14th Street Gym, near 1400 West and 200 South, after midnight early Wednesday. As he was waiting for a cab ride, the man said someone walked up behind him, swore at him, used a derogatory sexual-orientation slur and hit him over the top of the head with a bottle, police said. The attacker ran off. Police said the victim showed signs of intoxication and was not able to give officers an accurate description of his attacker. He suffered cuts to his forehead and was bleeding profusely when he was transported to a hospital in critical condition, police said. Police are investigating the attack as a potential hate crime.

A D.C. police commander and two U.S. Attorney’s office prosecutors faced sharp questioning during a Dec. 12 City Council hearing on the city’s response to anti-gay hate crimes.
Council members Phil Mendelson (D-At-Large), chair of the Council’s Committee on Public Safety & the Judiciary, and David Catania (I-At-Large), a member of the committee, said they were troubled over police and prosecutor handling of at least three recent cases where gay men were attacked in Washington.
“I’m really quite disturbed in the way some of these cases have been handled in terms of police response, which I think has not been adequate,” Mendelson said.
Catania characterized as “ridiculous” a decision by the U.S. Attorney’s office to accept a claim by a defendant charged in the September beating death of Tony Randolph Hunter that Hunter provoked the attack by grabbing the defendant’s crotch. Police said a group of four youths attacked Hunter, who was gay, and a friend as they walked to a D.C. gay bar.

Change came to Atlanta in 2008 in uneven bursts of addition and subtraction that seemed to leave open the question of whether gay Atlanta moved forward or backward in its fight for equality this year.
In the same month city officials told Atlanta Pride to find a new home, President-elect Barack Obama came to Atlanta and encouraged greater involvement of gays in the civil rights struggle.
While gay issues didn’t factor greatly into Georgia’s political battles this year, an anti-bullying bill and an inclusive hate crimes bill died in the Georgia General Assembly. Likewise, 2008 saw five openly gay people seek seats in the state House or Senate with only Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates) retaining her spot.

Attack someone because of their skin color, religion or national origin and it's considered a hate crime, which can warrant additional charges in Pennsylvania. Attack the same person because of ancestry, disability, sexual orientation or gender and it isn't. State Sen. Jim Ferlo, D-Highland Park, wants to change that by increasing the list of protected classes. Now....Conservative groups have been fighting to keep gays from being a protected class since at least 2005, when an evangelist and four followers were arrested on charges of ethnic intimidation after they disrupted a Philadelphia gay pride event.

The mother of a gay murder victim is calling on advocates to help convince her state's parole board not to let her son's killer out of prison before serving his full sentence.
Sean William Kennedy, 20, was attacked in the early morning of May 17, 2007 outside the former Brew's Bar in Greenville, South Carolina. WASHINGTON When Sen. Kay Hagan takes the podium Saturday, in her first public address in Charlotte since taking office, she'll face a group that's become a key part of the Democratic constituency – gay rights advocates. That hasn't always been a comfortable choice for politicians because of the potential backlash from folks who don't support gay rights. “That's a gutsy thing to do, though I guess less so all the time,” said Ted Arrington, a political science professor at UNC Charlotte. “They've become a more important part of the Democratic coalition.”
