This past week the world marked Holocaust Remembrance Day - an annual day set aside to commemorate the millions of victims of persecution and hate, which included countless Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people (LGBT community), who were identified in the camps by a pink triangle.

President Obama acknowledged this day with a speech at the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., and for what may be the first time in U.S. history a U.S. president drew the connection between global homophobia and the violence that happened during one of the 20th century's most gruesome tragedies. This is a sobering reminder that small acts of hate toward marginalized groups can grow into unspeakable atrocities, which is why hate crimes legislation is so important.

Here's the line that Obama gave at the Holocaust Museum, according to
the Advocate:

"To this day, there are those who insist the Holocaust never happened, who perpetrate every form of intolerance -- racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, xenophobia, sexism, and more -- hatred that degrades its victim and diminishes us all. Today and every day we have an opportunity, as well as an obligation, to confront these scourges. To fight the impulse to turn the channel when we see images that disturb us, or wrap ourselves in the false comforts that others' sufferings are not our own…"
