| Organizer: Cole Machado Join The Impact Humboldt Contact info email: impacthumboldtATgmail.com phone: 707-442-5555 or Click Here On December 20th, we ask that you join us again for a nation-wide demonstration that will make an impact on the private sector. Candlelight vigils will be held at commercial centers in cities across the country in remembrance of the rights that once were for 18,000 marriages, and in honor of the rights that one day will be again - for EVERYONE. HOW DOES IT WORK? Please take to our local commercial district (Bayshore Mall) at 5PM. This will be a peaceful demonstration in the spirit of the holidays. We'll dress alike: make or buy a "Second Class Citizen" t-shirt. This will also be the culmination of our Humboldt Food Drive for Equality event. So be sure to bring a few cans of food or other non-perishable food items that will go to Food For People. WHAT WILL WE BE DOING? Hosting peaceful candlelight vigils We will stay silent unless asked a question, we will not yell, instigate, or bare signs. Instead, we will let our shirts do the talking and our candles pay our respects. Bring candles. Singing and/or silence encouraged...chanting is not....keep it peaceful and in the holiday spirit. Marriage Equality Carols & Songs | 5:00 p.m. * Saturday * December 20th If you are interested in helping with the Humboldt Light Up The Night (LUTN) For Equality on December 20, first become a member of Join The Impact: it's fast and free. Then contact me (Cole Machado) via email or phone and let me know how you would like to be involved, share any suggestions or advice, and ask me questions. The idea with Light Up The Night (LUTN) is to organize in a public shopping area because that's where the people are on December 20th. We will hold our LUTN at the Bayshore Mall in an unobtrusive as possible manner, e.g., outside spread out every 10 feet on the public sidewalk, standing in a manner that would not obstruct pedestrian traffic. We have a small fliers (below) that we give to anyone who asks a question, since we can inform more people if we give a short handout as well as talk with those interested in a dialogue. Remember that the idea with LUTN is to enlighten and inform. We won't shout or chant or hold signs (other than the shirts or hats we wear) or the message of our candles light. Marriage Equality Carols & Songs | Q: What is Light Up The Night For Equality (LUTN)? A: Peaceful, candlelight vigil to draw attention to our "2nd class citizen" status in a quiet yet very visible manner. See the main LUTN page for details. Q: Do you have to be LGBTQ to participate? A: No. In fact, we will not succeed without our straight allies. So please join us! Q: How big of an area will we be covering? A: We are planning to have people on the sidewalk every 10 feet in front of the mall near MacDonalds all the way down Broadway North towards the sidewalk in front of Taco Bell or beyond. Please bring as many people as you can. Help spread the word. Q: I'm straight and I'm not sure if I want to stand out in public with a candle. My business colleagues or friends might think I'm gay. A: And that fear gives you some insight into why it's frightening for teens and adults to come out of the closet and live authentic lives. Many straight people welcome an experience like this one because it helps them understand at an experiential level, rather than just intellectually, what it's like to be an LGBTQ person. And if people you know see you standing up for equality, and if they ask you if you're gay, or talk behind your back, or tease you, it's a perfect opportunity to open up their minds when they least expect it. Below are some answers you might give if someone asks, "Hey I saw you holding a candle out there. Are you a lesbian? (or "Are you one of them?" or "Hitting for the other team, now eh?") Answer 1: "Why, would it change how you treat or interact with me?" Answer 2: "Not all the people there were gay." And then when they say something like, "Oh, haha, so you were just supporting them, huh?" You could say, "Not all the people there were straight." Answer 3: "Before I answer that question, will you answer one for me? ... How have you viewed me differently since you saw me at the Light Up The Night event?" | make or buy a shirt (also available for relatives and friends) or t-shirt transfer images are here and transfer paper can be purchased at any office supply store. 8 sheets for $9 at Staples. You just print it out and Iron it on the shirt. Also a suggestion from Amy Balliett the co-founder of Join the Impact is to buy mens white undershirts at Target they are around 3 for $5 and a Sharpie. Write on the Shirt then spray it with Hairspray. When you wash the shirt the ink will not run! Amy also said it was the secret to how she designed her whole wardrobe in college. She wore lots of Sharpie Shirts! . *Second Class Citizen shirt is NOT mandatory* After Light Up The Night come join us and wear your shirt for a Ice Cream Social at Nona's Ice Cream The Locally Owned LGBT Friendly Ice Cream Shop in the Cafe Court or for a Holiday Coffee Social & Book Shopping Party at Seattle's Best Coffee Located inside the LGBT Friendly Bookstore Borders This event is not sponsored by Seattle's Best Coffee or Borders Books.
