gaymom Why marriage? Why not Civil Partnerships? (page: 1 2 3 4 5 ... last page) 217 Mar 12 2009, 9:57 PM EDT by pngwnz

Why are we protesting CA's Prop. 8? I mean they do have tons more rights than most states. Did you hear what Elton John said in New York on Nov. 11, 2008 for the annual benefit for the Elton John AIDS Foundation?
"I don't want to be married. I'm very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership," John says. "The word 'marriage,' I think, puts a lot of people off.
"You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships." I think he says it all. Why don't we protest for civil partnerships? That seems more reasonable to me.

I'm the type of individual who I would consider as being neutral in this discussion. Sure, I've recently had my heart smashed by a girl who I fell in love with, who turned out to be a lesbian, but that is personal. The entire issue of same sex marriage is business. I don't have enough information, from an unbiased, scientific approach, to make the determination of what the cause of homosexuality is, much less whether we should turn ,what could arguably the single most established and long endurring human tradition of male/female relationship and family structure, upside down and inside out, just because a very vocal and active minority group wish for it to be so. I would like to cover any such event and interview people from each side of the issue, but as far as swaying this guy goes, I will wait until all of the unbiased research is on the table and there has been an unbiased social discussion, based upon intellectual honesty.

I can't think of a single LOGICAL reason why gays can't marry.
