LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FOR EQUALITY | DECEMBER 20, 2008 | 5PM
WHAT IS IT?
On December 20th, we ask that you join us again for a nation-wide demonstration that will make an impact on the private sector. Candlelight vigils will be held at commercial centers in cities across the country in remembrance of the rights that once were for 18,000 marriages, and in honor of the rights that one day will be again - for EVERYONE.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Please take to your local commercial district at 5PM--be it a shopping mall, outdoor financial center, you name it.
  • This will be a peaceful demonstration in the spirit of the holidays.
  • We'll dress alike: make or buy a "Second Class Citizen" t-shirt.
  • This will be the culmination of our National Food Drive for Equality event (see below for details)
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

  • Hosting peaceful candlelight vigils
  • We will stay silent unless asked a question, we will not yell, instigate, or bare signs. Instead, we will let our shirts do the talking and our candles pay our respects.Bring candles (battery powered if you'll be huddling inside).
  • Singing and/or silence encouraged...chanting is not....keep it peaceful and in the holiday spirit.

Sign Making Party: Dec. 11th. 5:30 pm @ The Center

Event Details: During one of the busiest shopping days of the holiday season, Stand OUT for Equality is reminding Nevadans about the vast buying power of the LGBT community and that gay dollars are spent where equality is valued and protected.

The buying power of America's LGBT community is estimated to be $759 BILLION in 2009.* This number is expected to grow to $835 BILLION by 2011.*

Add to this that 88% of LGBT adults are likely to consider a brand or company that is known to provide equal workplace benefits for all employees and will avoid a company that opposes equality.*

During these difficult economic times, Stand OUT for Equality is spreading the word on which businesses support equality and we are urging fair-minded citizens to spend their dollars with companies who value the rights of every American citizen.

Stand OUT for Equality is calling for a buycott to support those businesses that supported California's NO on Proposition 8 to show our support for them. And we are calling for a boycott of those businesses that supported California's YES on Proposition 8 and have anti-equality stances in their workplaces to remind shoppers where not to shop this holiday season.

Stand OUT for Equality will spread this message on Saturday, December 13 at 3 p.m. by marching from The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada (953 E. Sahara Ave, Suite B-31) to the intersection of Flamingo and Maryland, past the Boulevard Mall where thousands of shoppers will be determining where and how to spend their money. Stand OUT for Equality reminds businesses that OUR MONEY TALKS!
