From an HRC Email that I received today.

"They're probably the greatest threat to America going down I know of."
So what's America's greatest threat? The weakest economy in 80 years? Widespread layoffs, bank collapses, meltdown in the auto industry and a housing crisis?
Not according to Utah State Sen. Chris Buttars. In a recent interview obtained by HRC, he says America's greatest threat is the LGBT community. He goes on to call lesbian and gay relationships "abominations" and claims LGBT people lack morals. Watch now >>
Just appalling. We need to make sure that these kinds of remarks by a public official do not go unanswered.
Words matter. They can't just be laughed or shrugged off. In the interview, Sen. Buttars calls LGBT people "the meanest buggers I've ever seen" – this kind of rhetoric creates an atmosphere of hatred that incites violence against LGBT Americans.
Here are a few more lowlights from Buttars' vile rant:
  • LGBT people "are destroying the Constitution."
  • Their "number one goal is to proselytize to youth" and use schools as "a recruiting station."
  • Thanks to them we are, "moving toward a society that has no morals."
  • They will "destroy the foundation of American society... In my mind, it is the beginning of the end."
What's more, Sen. Buttars also takes clear pride in saying he's "killed" every piece of pro-equality legislation in Utah for eight years.
These remarks were not made behind closed doors, but openly and unapologetically in a January 30th on-camera interview with filmmaker Reed Cowen, taped in Buttars' official Senate office.
Sadly, hateful speech is nothing new to Buttars. During debate over a school-funding bill last year, he said "This baby is black... It's a dark, ugly thing," sparking the NAACP to call for his resignation.
Will Utah's leaders hold Sen. Buttars accountable? Will they tolerate shameless bigotry in their chamber?
Then tell your friends about Sen. Buttars' outrageous comments and ask them to write in too.
There's no lie too hateful, no tactic too low, for right-wing bigots to use in their campaign against LGBT rights and freedoms.
The only one who can stop them is you. Thank you for taking action.
Warmly,
Joe Solmonese

I received this too. I used the HRC form to write a letter to the President of the Utah Senate. Who knows if it does any good? But I don't see how it can hurt. Hateful people like this make me want to scream.

I sent mine in as well. What an incredible waste of time and money having to constantly confront and battle this blatant hatred.
It never ceases to amaze me when I hear this type of hatred.
No doubt it's a desperate part of their campaign to divert as much attention from the real problems facing this country.
It's extremely important to expose this mentality and never forget that there are people out there with political power that think like this guy and given the chance would throw our gay ass in the oven without a second thought.

Who is Chrissi Buttars Gay Drag Queen of Buttar Palooza , is it an alter ego of Senator Chris Buttars from Utah ?
Oh Ho No You Don’t Senator Buttars!
Senator You Deserve At Least Three Drag Queen Bitch Slaps:
(1)The Ugly Black Baby comments were despicable no group of people should be Hated On That Way!
(2)The comments made about School Segregation are also unacceptable.
(3) There are many Muslims who are excellent model citizens which were offended by your remarks, As a Christian I was offended that you made it sound like they were all terrorists. As a gay tax paying citizen I was offended. You attempt to judge me without knowing me, based upon my sexual orientation. You fail to recognize my model citizen background, Westminster College degree, as well as having at least two major government related background checks, as well as being a Christian, and outspoken social advocate for change in our country and peace in our community. Who the ()/ell, do you think you are? You attempt to generalize all into one group by using outdated bigotry based stereotyping. When challenged on your hate, you give side stepped and meaningless apologies. You do not in your heart care for those that you have hurt. Your opinion is one thing; to be allowed to spout vile hate is another. I believe in Karma, what goes around comes around.

Buttars-Palooza!
When: Sat, February 28, 1pm – 3pm
Where: Utah State capitol South Lawn (map)
Description: Utahans are fair and just people who strive for a better society. We believe “in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. We also believe in free speech. However, State Senator Chris Buttars crossed the line drawn by a fair and just people by stepping on a minority with offensive and demeaning language. Through his defense of the Senator from West Jordan, Senate President Michael Waddoups is equally complicit in this defense of the Senator. By their actions, Senators Buttars and Waddoups do not value or respect that sense of fairness and justice of the majority of Utahns. Senators Buttars and Waddoups did not just demean the LGBT community. They demeaned all Utahns striving for a fair and just society. By recently claiming the "the gays" as the ""biggest threat to America", the Senator ignored climate change, economic disparity, racial inequity and xenophobia, and the other big challenges faced by America, Utah, and our cities and towns. All Utahns are invited to come the Capitol on Saturday, February 28th at 1pm to party for truth and justice. The event will be a lively and fun celebration of our diversity and inclusion of all in a fair and just society. The event will be MC’d by Troy Williams of KRCL and there will be great speakers, music, and other fun. Come celebrate with us!!!
