<Organizer: Add time and location details here>Even if there's no rally organized you can still contribute to our goal of obtaining 1 MILLION SIGNATURES on the Open Letter to Obama (linked and explained here) asking him to keep his promises to the LGBTQ community. Some easy ways to get signatures on this letter are:
1. Take them to ally rich places such as gay bars, allied church and organization mtgs, college campuses
2. Print a copy and carry it wherever you go (work, class, meeting friends, family gatherings, etc)
3. Send the letter to everyone you know by email asking them to print it and get signatures and forward your email
4. Make sure you're using the official signature page please. It's important for legal and continuity reasons.

You can start collecting signatures today! They must be mailed by 1/12 for us to take them to Barack Obama. Adding your contact info is a great way to get volunteers to help you.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FOR EQUALITY | DECEMBER 20, 2008 | 5PM
WHAT IS IT?
On December 20th, we ask that you join us again for a nation-wide demonstration that will make an impact on the private sector. Candlelight vigils will be held at commercial centers in cities across the country in remembrance of the rights that once were for 18,000 marriages, and in honor of the rights that one day will be again - for EVERYONE.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Please take to your local commercial district at 5PM--be it a shopping mall, outdoor financial center, you name it.
  • This will be a peaceful demonstration in the spirit of the holidays.
  • We'll dress alike: make or buy a "Second Class Citizen" t-shirt.
  • This will be the culmination of our National Food Drive for Equality event (see below for details)
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

  • Hosting peaceful candlelight vigils
  • We will stay silent unless asked a question, we will not yell, instigate, or bare signs. Instead, we will let our shirts do the talking and our candles pay our respects.Bring candles (battery powered if you'll be huddling inside).
  • Singing and/or silence encouraged...chanting is not....keep it peaceful and in the holiday spirit.

STILL NEED ORGANIZER

Organizing is easy, but if you don't have an organizer in your city, get a group of 5-10 friends together, print out the Light Up the Night Holiday Cards, and head to your local mall and start passing them out. Don't forget to keep count of how many cards you passed out. There will be a place to report the numbers soon!

LFUCG Government Center
200 E Main St, Lexington, KY 40507 (NOT the Courthouse)
Corner of Main and Harrison (description: large awning that reads "Government Center;" on the same block as the Kentucky Theatre)

The protest will move to Phoenix Park at 2pm (or sooner if we outgrow the City Hall sidewalk).

The Lexington “Join the Impact” protest for LGBTQ Equality will begin at 1:30pm EST on Saturday, November 15 - RAIN OR SHINE! Continue to invite your friends and families to this important event!

The protest will begin at the LFUCG GOVERNMENT CENTER (not to be confused with the courthouse). Government Center is at 200 E. Main St. (corner of Main and Harrison) on the same block as the Kentucky Theatre. The entrance is clearly marked “Government Center.”

Protestors will chant, picket and display their signs on the sidewalk. At around 2pm (or earlier if we outgrow the sidewalk) we will walk one block to Phoenix Park (corner of Main and Limestone adjacent to the library) where protestors will have an opportunity to share their personal stories of commitment to LGBTQ equality with the group. We will disperse at 2:30, although some folks may wish to keep the gathering going over warm drinks somewhere in the area.

There are still some VITAL volunteer opportunities for the day of the event. Email impactlexington@gmail.com if you are interested in the following:
+ Leading chants – Visit http://jointheimpact.wetpaint.com/page/Protest+Chants for ideas and come prepared to lead.
+ Documenting the event – Take pictures and video of the event and email them to impactlexington@gmail.com so that they can be shared with media or referred to if any problems arise.
+ Speak – Come prepared to say a few words if you’d like to address the group at Phoenix Park.

Here are a few other friendly reminders about the protest:
+ The protest cannot block pedestrian traffic so be respectful of others on the sidewalk.
+ Obey all traffic signals as we walk to Phoenix Park.
+ Stand only on the sidewalk and not in the street or private property during the protest.
+ Do not leave any signs, handouts, litter, etc behind.
+ Signs should have POSITIVE messages and AVOID attacks on opposing viewpoints.
+ If you plan to speak, be prepared to do so without a platform or microphone.
+ Members of the press may be on hand. We will provide you with a set of talking points that may guide you should you choose to talk to the media.
+ If your sign is attached to a stick, the stick should be no more than ¼” thick.
+ Remain peaceful and respectful at all times.
+ Coffee will likely be provided and you might want to plan to stick around to socialize over warm drinks at a nearby bar or restaurant after the protest.
