| Organizer: Mark Worthen Contact info email: mworthen [at] gmail dot com phone: (435) 647-6706 skype: mark.worthen postal: p.o. box 680536, park city, ut 84068 | DETAILS * Saturday, Dec. 20, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.- "Light Up The Night" candlelight vigil for Equality * Gather between 4:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in City Park (Google map) * Bring a sack of nonperishable food, which we will donate to the Christian Center of Park City. * 4:00 - 4:30 p.m. - Provide instructions and supplies to the participants. * 4:45 p.m. - Walk to Main Street * 5:00 p.m. - Light Up The Night! NOTE: Please bring a battery-powered or LED candle or a flashlight. Flame candles blow out easily and pose a potential fire hazard and therefore are not allowed. Dress warm! Predicted temperature is 5 degrees for this time in the evening. We will stand on the sidewalk, spaced out up and down Main Street, holding a battery-powered candle or similar light. Please make a sign to affix to your coat, e.g., using safety pins, saying, if you are LGBT, saying "2nd Class Citizen" or, if you are a friend or relative, a sign such as "Mother of a 2nd Class Citizen" or "[Nature of relationship] of a 2nd Class Citizen." The idea of the sign is to elicit questions from passersby and thereby engage them in respectful conversation. If you are not comfortable with the "2nd Class Citizen" idea, make a sign that works for you. The idea is to increase awareness about the number of civil rights denied to LGBT people. We will have a single sheet handout with information. We will not walk up to people; we want them to come to us and ask what we are doing if they choose. Engage such people in peaceful, respectful conversations in which you explain why you're there. You may offer them the handout too. We will not chant, shout slogans, or brandish signs (only a shirt or small sign pinned to our clothing as described above). We are working with the Park City Municipal Corporation and the Park City Police Department to ensure this is a peaceful, friendly event. Our vision is to enlighten, inform, and befriend people who heretofore have not thought much about civil rights for LGBT people. And we want to have fun doing it. After the vigil, which will last one hour (less if the weather is rough), we will gather at a gay-friendly club or restaurant to celebrate and have fun. NOTE: If you can volunteer to help plan and organize this event, please tell me! I need your help. ~ Mark Worthen For last-minute updates: a) Join our Facebook group and send invitations to all your friends. Alternatively, you can subscribe to our mailing list and send an email to your friends asking them to do the same. b) Copy-and-paste this email and send it to all your friends and ask them to forward it to all their friends. c) Contact me (Mark Worthen) if you can help with planning and organization. I can't do this alone! I need your help. d) Bring a sack of food (nonperishable) to support our Food Drive for Equality - All food donations will be given to the Utah Food Bank and/or a local food pantry. e) Buy a shirt to wear that night (far right column). You might want to buy a size much larger than normal so you can wear it over a coat or a few layers of warm clothing. We will also have signs you can pin to your jacket or coat if buying a shirt is not your preference. Cafepress also has several different articles of clothing with different sayings on them. Search for "2nd class" on their site. Other companies might have shirts, hats, and sweatshirts too. I'd search Google if you want to discover all the possibilities. Arrive before 4:30 p.m. for an organizational meeting to be held at that time (location to be announced). The candlelight vigil on Main Street will begin at 5:00 p.m. and last for one hour (shorter if the weather is rough). Please arrive before 4:30 p.m. to donate your food and so you know where to stand and what to do. Join our Facebook group or subscribe to our mailing list so that you receive updates and crucial information. If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns contact me (Mark Worthen) via email, phone, or Skype. We will have small fliers that we can give to anyone who expresses interest. We will not walk up to people and hand them a flier. Stand silently holding the fliers and people who are curious will ask for one. Remember that the idea with LUTN is to enlighten and inform. We will not shout or chant or hold signs (other than the shirts or hats we wear). | Q: Why Park City? Why not just combine forces in Salt Lake City? A: Because some LGBTQ folks are advocating a boycott of the Sundance Film Festival and Utah's ski resorts. We want to show the gay community that Park City Supports Gay Civil Rights and that boycotting Sundance and our ski resorts is a bad idea. Q: What is Light Up The Night (LUTN)? A: Peaceful, candlelight vigil to draw attention to our "2nd class citizen" status in a quiet yet very visible manner. See the main LUTN page for details. Q: Do you have to be LGBTQ to participate? A: No. In fact, we will not succeed without our straight allies. So please join us! Q: I'm straight and I'm not sure if I want to stand out in public with a candle. My business colleagues or friends might think I'm gay. A: And that fear gives you some insight into why it's frightening for teens and adults to come out of the closet and live authentic lives. Many straight people welcome an experience like this one because it helps them understand at an experiential level, rather than just intellectually, what it's like to be an LGBTQ person. And if people you know see you standing up for equality, and if they ask you if you're gay, or talk behind your back, or tease you, it's a perfect opportunity to open up their minds when they least expect it. Below are some answers you might give if someone asks, "Hey I saw you holding a candle out there. Are you a lesbian? (or "Are you one of them?" or "Hitting for the other team, now eh?") Answer 1: "Why, would it change how you treat or interact with me?" Answer 2: "Not all the people there were gay." And then when they say something like, "Oh, haha, so you were just supporting them, huh?" You could say, "Not all the people there were straight." Answer 3: "Before I answer that question, will you answer one for me? ... How have you viewed me differently since you saw me at the Light Up The Night event?" | Parking Information Note: You might want to buy a size much larger than normal so you can wear it over a coat or a few layers of warm clothing.
