We kept saying that the incoming snowstorm would not stop the shoppers, therefore would not stop us. However, I arrived just after 4pm and the park was dead? I ask again, where is everyone??
After waiting around for a bit, I walked down to Westlake Center to find similar results: Nobody there for the vigil. I'm very much upset that it didn't come together and quite confused as to why so many said they'd be there and never showed up. It's disheartening.

Sorry, I will never keep silent for your organization or any other. I therefore will not participate in your demonstration. When you act like sheeple, the religious right hate mongers will have even less respect for you than they do now. This is one Viet Nam vet who never takes any disrespect from anyone for any reason.
Be proud, walk tall, speak out!

I agree with both sides of the peaceful non-peaceful stands, it's all in the timing. There is only two results when a majority subjugate a minority: one, the minority is exterminated, the other, they receive equality. There is no in between, just time. Do you think the violence would have ever ended in S.Africa if the blacks had not been given equality? The religious extremist are asking for a never ending war, even if they exterminate us, in one generation we will be back. ...unless they find a way to abort gay embryos. We need to use peace, like tonight, but one day, violence might have it's place.

Tonight, please let's say a prayer for Durval Martins, a 35 year-old gay man, who was shot and killed this week in Washington D.C. It is not known if his sexual orientation was a factor in his murder. But we have lost one of our brothers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8pcAPGlpAE The killing comes at a time when D.C. activists, led by Gays & Lesbian Opposing Violence, have expressed concern that more than a half-dozen gay men have been assaulted this year in cases where they appear to have been targeted because of their sexual orientation.

As you have probably heard, Rick Warren has been invited to give the invocation at the Inaugural. There has been a huge uproar in the LGBT community as you can probably imagine. It has hit the Washington Post and NY Times. I think Obama basically did this to give out a signal, particularly to the evangelical community, that he is not going to be beholden to the LGBT community, despite his relatively strong LGBT stances.
There is a protest this coming Saturday, Light up the Night, which is basically a candlelight vigil calling for Equal Rights. I am thinking we need to use this occasion to protest the invitation of Rick Warren to the inauguration. Some people are saying it takes away from the spirit of the occasion - peaceful, inclusive, etc. But we weren't the ones who threw the hand grenade under the door of the LGBT community - Rick Warren did that when he compared homosexuality to incest and pedophilia. And then Obama sanctioned his views when he invited him to the Inauguration. Some people are suggesting we just pass out literature asking people to sign petitions, send emails and make calls to the Inaugural committee. This is all well and good but it a pretty weak response in my mind. We don't want to be perceived too much as an angry mob, but we have to respond. We would be complicit in our oppression if we did not respond. We need to respond in a peaceful but vocal manner. We need to say that people like Rick Warren do not deserve a national stage that sanctions their extreme, homophobic views. Regards, David

Brothers sisters and somewhere inbetweeners…
No violence. Yes, we are all angry and want to punch someone, but the reality is that we can not change anything with violence or by ourselves. We need the help of our straight allies and supporters. By committing to violence we will be alienating the people who are helping us and scaring others from joining our cause. WE ARE WINNING! Just look at TV in the last few month look how many people are speaking out loud about our issues and defending us (Obermen, Stuart, Newsweek…). When our haters speak they constantly use the false accusations that we have been violent. That we discriminate against each other, we are racist… They are getting desperate because change is coming… because in a year or so I will be marrying my husband to be… Because soon we will be chanting, “yes, I do.” The significance of light up the night is a symbol of visibility infused with the extra meanings of the holidays. Christians, Jews, Blacks and other groups celebrate this time of year with “light” as a promise and symbol to be delivered out of darkness. People can identify with the theme and they can identify with people wanting to come out into the light. So let us help them come into the light. Most people are not homophobic; they are homoignorant. They just don’t know what the whole “gay” thing is all about. Usually this is because they are not aware of the fact that they know someone gay. The images they have in their heads are false depictions of pedophiles, rapists or people with horns. Light up the night! Light US up! Let us show them who we really are! We are loving people who want the same rights everyone else in this country has. Now, when you do stand in the vigil and hold your flashlight or candle, think of Lady Liberty; the most masculine female icon in the USA… and what is she doing? Lighting up the night for ALL Americans.

Civil rights are historically won through violence and threatening the ruling class. The oppressor concedes nothing unless threatened. Look at the 60s. Look at the Civil War. What if Lincoln had decided he would end slavery via "consensus"? Milk was a lie. Those pansies did not just march, they busted windows and rioted. At Stonewall the queens broke glass, burned cop cars and fought back. When you're willing to do more than light a candle and look for a date maybe you'll gain something.

First off, i would like to give props to everyone — the nationwide protests and marches was a brilliant idea and well executed!
Now regarding the “2nd Class” t-shirt idea… I understand where the intent is coming from (i work in marketing) but i think we can come up with something a lot more impactful and effective. My friends and I are not too crazy about wearing such a t-shirt. We think that the community can come up with a better idea. So PLEASE, PLEASE have a different T-Shirt. There’s soooo many better, clever and effective statements you can have us all wear in unity… PLEEEEEASE… Please have a different t-shirt theme. Thanks!!

Hi guys,
I have to agree on the t-shirt issue. I think we should have a more positive message. I'm certainly not 2nd Class even if certain people weant to treat me that way. And more outreach. I didn't know ANYTHING about the food drive (and I'm pretty actively involved)...and I can't find too much detail on this site either. GREAT idea, but doesn't do much if people don't know about it. I'd be happy to help you guys get concise info posted so that people know what they need to do & when. Just let me know. ;0)

"Light Up the Night for Same Sex Marriage Rights!"
"Light Up the Night, We Fight for our Equal Rights!" " Light Up the Night, Let's Get Same Sex Married Tonight!" (humorous) "Light Up the Night, Equality Takes Flight!" "Light Up the Night, I'm Married Tonight!" For those of us who married our partners... "Light Up the Night, We're Here, We're Queer, Fighting for our Rights!" Dammit, yes, let's be OUT about it! "Light Up the Night, Same Sex Marriage is Right!" "Light Up the Night, ect. ect. ect.....come up with your own rhymes, or borrow, adjust mine...take what you like, leave the rest.. I think it's important to always affirm a positive, rather than a negative. People respond to a positive message, and are brought down by a negative one. We want them to be curious, to be interested, they're doing frantic holiday shopping (for those who can afford to do so in such a chic area), so give 'em some entertainment. "Second Class Citizen is a downer, and a negative, and people have enough negatives with job losses, bailouts, ect....and so do we....While some may be comfortable sporting Second Class Citizen, and they're free to do so, others of us feel very strongly about the powers of POSITIVE AFFIRMATION. AS AN OUT AND OBVIOUS NON PASSING BIG BUTCH I FEEL MY SECOND CLASS CITIZENSHIP EVERY F-ING DAY....Do I want to reaffirm that at a rally? No...I come to a rally to feel empowered. -In Unity, -MasterAmazon

I won't be part of anything that says, look at poor me a "second class citizen". That even means standing with a group of people wearing such a degrading slogan. We are a creative community we can do so much better. I did notice that Don suggested "'1st Class Responsibilities - 2nd Class" Rights' This states the case a little better without being pathetic and whiny. We need to think real hard about what we want to look like to the outsider that we are appealing too. I think we want to make the people that already support us proud that they are on our side. The other point that so many people have made is tee shirts and cold weather. Not a winning combination. A small sign 6'x8' can be hand made or printed from your web site right before walking out the door. If we are going to have one slogan (or many) let's get everyone's suggestions and put it to a vote. We are in this together let's make really good decisions together. I want to come off as a proud, smart, likable person in the LGBT community. We are making history. We need to be proud when we look back on the statement(s) we are making for the history books.

ok, so there's no thread yet about the L.A. event, so here goes. OMG! It looks like it's going to be HUGE.
It's changed so much from when we started planning just a week ago. We thought it was going to be at The Grove with about 300 people, and now it's going to be around the Hollywood & Highland complex with estimates of more than a thousand people. Maybe a lot more. So much has been accomplished in the last week. So much still to do in the next 9 days. Our planning crew jumped from 10 to 30, and we are hoping to have another 50 volunteers by the time of the event (anyone in L.A. who'd like to help out, please contact me.) I have to say I'm very disappointed with L.A. Councilman Eric Garcetti, who has usually supported gay causes. Although he was encouraging at first, he ended up pulling his support to get us a street closure and, more imporant, to ask the City Council for a permit fee waiver. And so, we don't have a permit ... and will thus be exercising our first amendment rights by staying on the sidewalk and moving along in a huge procession of candle light. It's going to be very wonderful ... and very challenging. The area we're dealing with is a very crowded place ... the heart of Hollywood on the Saturday night before Christmas! And it's going to be fantastic, and spritual, and uplifting, and inspirational, and so much freaking fun. Though this is about nationwide gay rights, we are so honored that the putative object of the vigils is the 18,000 same sex married couples in California and having those rights to marry restored. After they are restored in California, we ARE going to affirm them for the entire nation. But right now, we feel as if we are the focus of a huge and wonderful national effort ... and we are humbled and amazed. Thank you, everyone who is particpating around the country. Thank you.

For those who are holding their vigils outdoors and its too chilly, t-shirts won't exactly work. To get around this problem, I recommend printing off "Second Class Citizen" signs on full page labels (basically 8.5x11 stickers). Print, peel and stick to your coat or jacket! Worried about getting sticker goo on that nice new parka? The full page sticker sheets are extremely thick and should hold up long enough for the event with safety pins - or at least a lot better than just paper.
This is also an easy way to ensure EVERYONE can wear the same thing without spending gobs on custom shirts. Save that money for your wedding, or donate it to Lambda Legal so you can move that wedding date up!

My husband and I are interfaith ministers, our belief is that marriage is the joining of two souls. We were deeply saddened by the passage of prop 8. We will be at Sacramento's light up the night vigil with "clergy for equal rights for all" t shirts on. If it is too cold we will pin signs to our coats. We will overcome, I'm old enough to remember the song and it fits here. Get out the word, check your batteries and be there to light up the night.
