Great Nationwide Kiss-In Los Angeles
What is this?
Time and Location
We need straight and gay couples for this event. Or come stag and we'll find you someone to kiss on the cheek.

If you're not canvassing for the Repeal of Prop 8 that day, please join us!
And, pass the word to your friends.

After incidents in San Francisco, San Antonio, TX, El Paso, TX and Salt Lake City, UT - where different gay and lesbian couples were harassed or detained by law enforcement or other people for the simple act of kissing in a public place - we need to make a strong statement to everyone everywhere: kissing is not a bad thing, nor has it ever been. It's not vulgar or inappropriate. It's a sign of affection that is as old as time itself. And it's a beautiful thing that we share with our loved ones every single day.

Have refreshments: Bottled water, snacks, etc.

Remember: Please be respectful and civil with people who may disagree with you. Have police authorities with you during the protest/rally. This is to help keep civility and stability.
California has a huge diverse population and its up to this ballot initiative campaign to reach out and speak up for the Golden State's diversity.

What can you do to support marriage equality NOW? Speak to at least three people you know whether it be a friend, relative, or acquaintance from California. Keep up the conversation for months and don't give up.

Please note that this event is just a plan. Grassroots protests and rallies won't begin probably until the start of the 2010 Gubernatorial Election, which is next year.
But it never hurts to start grassroots conversations NOW and begin gathering supporters when the event comes. Take care!

Day of Decision Los Angeles

Prop 8 Challenge Legal Team to Hold Press Conference Following Supreme Court Ruling

(Los Angeles, May 22, 2008) — The California Supreme Court has announced that it will rule Tuesday, May 26, 2009, on whether Proposition 8, passed by a slim majority of voters on November 4 and eliminating the right of same-sex couples to marry, was a valid amendment to the California Constitution.

At 10:30 a.m. -- approximately a half-hour after the expected posting of the ruling -- attorneys for plaintiff couples and community leaders will hold a news conference to discuss the ruling and what it means for California's same-sex couples and their families, communities of color, and the future of LGBT rights in California. Clergy members will deliver an invocation at 9:45 a.m., shortly before the ruling is announced.

WHEN:
Tuesday, May 26, 2009
9:45 a.m. Clergy Invocation
10:30 a.m. News Conference

WHERE:
Lucy Florence Cultural Center
3351 W. 43rd Street, L.A., CA 90008

WHO:

  • Ron Buckmire, Jordan Rustin Coalition
  • Jenny Pizer, Lambda Legal Marriage Project Director and Co-counsel, Strauss v. Horton
  • Mark Rosenbaum, Legal Director, ACLU of Southern California
  • Rocky Delgadillo, City Attorney of Los Angeles
  • Nancy Ramirez, Western Regional Attorney, MALDEF
  • Rev. Eric Lee, President/CEO, Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Southern California
  • Marc Solomon, Equality California (organizational plaintiff in Strauss v. Horton)
  • Jorge Amaro, Latino Equality Alliance
  • Doreena Wong, API Equality
  • Lorri L. Jean, CEO, L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center

Gay rights groups filed Strauss v. Horton, challenging Proposition 8, on November 5. The National Center for Lesbian Rights, Lambda Legal and the ACLU, representing six couples and Equality California, argued that the radical change attempted by Proposition 8 amounts to a "revision" of the California Constitution that cannot be accomplished by a simple majority vote of the electorate unless first approved by a two-thirds vote of both houses of the Legislature. Civil rights groups representing people of color and other minority groups joined the challenge because of a shared concern about protecting the constitutional guarantee of equality.

Local couples and community leaders will be available in English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean for one-on-one interviews.

Workers and the LGBT Community Unite Against Hyatt Hypocrisy and Andaz’s Poverty Wages in London

· Doug Manchester, owner of Hyatt’s 2nd largest property in North America, donated $125,000 in the initial stages of Proposition 8. Hyatt has a multi-million dollar LGBT marketing effort yet has not taken any action against Doug Manchester.

· Workers at the Hyatt Fisherman’s Wharf have called for a boycott of their hotel and are demanding a fair process from their management to decide whether to have a union and to have a work place free from fear and intimidation.

· Workers at the Hyatt-Owned Liverpool Andaz in London, England are not being paid the voluntary minimum wage. At the same time, Hyatt has opened a union Andaz in our community of West Hollywood.

· We must stand together to show Hyatt and Andaz that they must stop the hypocrisy, support our community and respect workers!

Hyatt has shown itself to be anti-worker.
Hyatt has proven itself to be anti-gay.

WHAT IS IT?
On December 20th, we ask that you join us again for a nation-wide demonstration that will make an impact on the private sector. Candlelight vigils will be held at commercial centers in cities across the country in remembrance of the rights that once were for 18,000 marriages, and in honor of the rights that one day will be again - for EVERYONE.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Please take to your local commercial district at 5PM--be it a shopping mall, outdoor financial center, you name it.
  • This will be a peaceful demonstration in the spirit of the holidays.
  • We'll dress alike: make or buy a "Second Class Citizen" t-shirt.
  • This will be the culmination of our National Food Drive for Equality event (see below for details)
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

  • Hosting peaceful candlelight vigils
  • We will stay silent unless asked a question, we will not yell, instigate, or bare signs. Instead, we will let our shirts do the talking and our candles pay our respects.Bring candles (battery powered if you'll be huddling inside).
  • Singing and/or silence encouraged...chanting is not....keep it peaceful and in the holiday spirit.

Marriage Equality USA Los Angeles Chapter announces Town Hall.

Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA)'s Los Angeles chapter will be facilitating the first in a series of Community Town Hall's on December 7, 2008 from 2:00pm-4:00pm to be held at the West Hollywood Auditorium at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood, CA, 90069. Doors will open at 1:30pm. The Town Hall is an open public forum to discuss Proposition 8's aftermath and to strategize where the community should go from here.

Co-organizer and Chapter Leader Geoff Scowcroft states the purpose, "is to let the community speaks its mind on what happened in the recent election and to map a new direction for the Same-Sex Marriage Movement." While other Town Halls have been organized Scowcroft says, "The messages in these discussions have been controlled by the same organizations that planned the failed strategy for the campaign. The format has lacked the transparency that many in the community feel is essential for a clear understanding of the issues. It is time for an open forum for our community to discuss what has happened, so that we can truly start the process of healing."

The format for the Town Hall will allow participants to share their feelings and comments whether positive or negative for the first hour. Community Leader's will be on hand to answer questions and help provide insight that the public might not have. The second half of the meeting will be a discussion of what direction the movement should take in the future.

It is requested that speakers limit their statements or questions to two minutes to allow multiple participants to share their point-of-view. A varied group of community leaders will be on hand to try to provide insight for and perspective.

A community area will be set up to allow other organizations to provide information and additional resources. Organizations that are interested in participating should contact the sponsors at ca-losangeles@marriageequality.org.

We are in need of volunteers that can help facilitate the event. Set up will start at 11am on the 7th. Volunteers are needed for set up, tear down and providing community information during the event. Volunteers should contact MEUSA's local Chapter Leaders, Geoff Scowcroft and Peter Wolf at ca-losangeles@marriageequality.org. We are also looking for individuals that would be interested in filming the event.

MEUSA is also looking for the donation of a video projector and 100-150 chairs to provide additional seating for the event.

Further information about this Town Hall can be found here Information on Town Hall's around the state and the nation can be found at the organizations website at http://www.marriageequality.org.

FROM STREET TO STRATEGY

Welcome to F.A.I.R. (Freedom - Action - Inclusion - Rights)! This group was initiated by the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center at a Young Activists Forum held November 8th, 2008. Managers of this Google Group are young Los Angeles-based activists who are dedicated to taking the fight for equal rights from the Streets to Strategy following the passage of Proposition 8 in California. Our primary focus is to disseminate information and form a strategic plan for the future of this Civil Rights movement. We hope F.A.I.R. will become a model for others in California and the rest of the USA.

Through this group, we hope to hear your input on how this movement should proceed. We will also post important information and event notices related to LGBT civil rights. Please share your suggestions and get involved!

You may also find more information regarding F.A.I.R. at http://www.justfair.us. Please share with your friends and family who might be interested. Thank you again for your support and check back often for updates!

-F.A.I.R www.justfair.us

Marriage Equality, Inc.

Marriage Equality, Inc. began as an idea in 1996 with a handful of activists believing that same-sex couples should have the freedom and the right to civil marriage, and angry that the federal government wanted to pass a law barring LGBT people from this right. The organization was officially founded and formed February 12, 1998, on National Freedom To Marry Day. The New York chapter became so successful that activists in Los Angeles Oakland and San Francisco California, responding to that state's 2000 anti-marriage referendum, began Marriage Equality California.
