| Yosemite National Park in front of the visitor center near park headquarters in Yosemite Valley at 5:00 p.m., 4:30 if you want to start early. We got the permission of The Ahwahnee management, but ultimately it is owned by the park and the park insists we hold the vigil in their designated free speech zone. I will still be walking to the Ahwahnee afterwards, to hear the performance as shown below, and I'll be carrying my lttle light with me as I go. Hope to see you there! Early arrivals encouraged! Some of us will be there as early as 4:30 to start the vigil. As a serendipitous extra, the Ahwahnee just happens to be presenting "Say It with Music - An Evening of Musical Theatre" that evening for free at 8:00 p.m. in the Ahwahnee Great Lounge that we can slip into afterwards. | Anyone who wants to come, I would love to hear from you ahead of time! While we would still like you to come if you are unable to contact us ahead of time, it will help to keep things smooth with the park service if I have a roughly accurate idea of how many to expect. David quiver@live.com If anyone lives or works at the park, even if you can't come to the event, please call or e-mail me! Maybe you know information that will us plan the event and make things smoother. VIGIL ONLY UNABLE TO ACCEPT FOOD We are unable to accept donations for the National Food Drive for Equality at this location, so we are planning a "Light Up the Night" VIGIL only. If you live in the area and would like to volunteer to change that, please alter this text with your information and contact David (above). | There are five us staying in Yosemite that night who will Light Up the Night in Yosemite! If you're in the park that night too, won't you join us? There must be more LGBT people and friends staying in Yosemite that night. How about anyone who's working in the park or living in a nearby community? If you're unable to get a battery operated candle beforehand, we'll be bringing some extra to share, but bring a flashlight at least, just in case there are more people than anticipated. DON'T BRING A REAL CANDLE! We suggest you take care of your food needs for the evening before the event as it may be impossible to find food afterwards. | |||

Hi, all -(apologies - think I double posted this in the discussion forum as well)
What a great day! For those of you who don't know, Mariposa is a red county in California. When we listed our demonstration, we got various comments along the lines of - "Mariposa? no way!" Well, turns out there are a lot of us progressives, liberals, whatever you want to call us out here. We had over 70 people for our demonstration today - for our town of 3,000 people (county has 20,000) that was very impressive! We had a good contingent of people who work in Yosemite National Park - they were thrilled they could come to a "local" rally instead of having to drive a couple hours to a larger city. We had children and senior citizens, gays, lesbians, and straights. We also had a few dogs who came out for equality. The weather was great. Because our county buildings are off the main drag, we chose to stand on the busiest corner in town - our one intersection with a four way stop. We were very visible! We got a LOT of positive reactions - thumbs up, honks, waves, cheers. Sure, we got people who didn't want to make eye contact - but not too many of the negatives! I think it was very good for our community that we were visible - we're letting them know that prop 8 discriminates against their neighbors, their co-workers, their peers; this is an issue that impacts our community, and we're going to get it overturned, one way or another. |
