I'm a subscriber and an active reader of Automobile Magazine. I will continue to subscribe to the magazine and encourage other car enthusiasts to do the same, but I think the derogatory use of gay is unacceptable. The January 2009 magazine has the following for the letter of the month:
Seeing the stock values of GM and Ford plummet can only leave me speculating why both companies have waited so long to bring over their economical and, dare I say, good-looking European models. Can seemingly continuous "employee discount deals" really keep a car company from falling into the depths of bankruptcy? Are the majority of American car buyers waiting until 2010 to accept the fact that small, economical, versatile cars from Europe with good driving dynamics aren't "gay"? Now seems like the logical time to make a comeback against companies like Honda and Volkswagen in the American small-car market. I won't even both to ask about diesel, since most people are afraid to use "weird pump" at U.S. gas stations (unless by accident). Sean Black Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ------------------- I don't know if anyone else is offended by the use of "gay" in this, but I'm tired of gay being used in a derogatory way. I wrote a letter to automobile magazine letting them know that this bothers me and that I think it is inappropriate. If you feel the same, I encourage you to send them an email at letter@automobilemag.com I do agree with some of what Sean Black had to say, but the use of gay, I think is offensive. Have a Great Day! Greg

I received the following email from HRC today. Please take a moment to read and respond to the TV station to let them know how you feel about this.
This Saturday – unless we act right now – a Michigan TV station will air a one-hour anti-LGBT propaganda piece designed to "reveal the truth about the radical homosexual agenda." The ultra-right wing American Family Association (AFA) says it produced the 60-minute program to air nation-wide. We need thousands of people to speak out IMMEDIATELY against this paid campaign of lies before the program airs on WOOD-TV, the local NBC station in Grand Rapids, MI. Make no mistake: this is the opening salvo in a coming battle over pro-equality legislation. Just as we are on the cusp of historic change – a federal hate crimes law, protections for LGBT workers against job discrimination – extremist groups like the AFA are launching a well-funded national campaign of hatred and fear to halt our progress. This program recycles familiar lies: that hate crime laws will "do away with our freedom of speech," or that pastors will be "criminalized for sharing the love of Jesus Christ." (In fact, the proposed federal hate crimes law explicitly states that it only applies to violent acts – not speech.) The "anchor" of this faux-news program, which may have already aired in smaller markets, is controversial talk show host Janet Parshall, who in 2006 suggested Matthew Shepard's lifestyle was responsible for his murder and called gay adoption "state-sanctioned child abuse." We cannot let this bigotry go unanswered. We can't let it scare voters, force LGBT people back into a place of shame and hiding, or create an atmosphere of intolerance or hate. If you want to contact the TV station, here is their link: http://www.woodtv.com/subindex/about_us/contact_us

I have family members who are lesbians and I love them. I am wondering what the latest is on multi-sex marriages and if it is finally gonna stay or did they remove the right again? I am involved in many important issues. Labor, Multisex, Politcal and others. I am tired of our government who no longer listens or remembers who they are REALLY suppose to work for. I live in Santa Rosa, CA USA For some reason I keep missing the sign right in my face when it comes to the Pride Parades. Everyone deserves independence and no one should be divided because of Religion, Race, Sex....do I really need to go on? LOL I recently lost a lesbian second cousin named Lois, she died of cancer. I will not stand by while people degrade peoples rights. Power to EVERYONE!!

The mission statement of JoinTheImpact. com is all about LGBT equality. Oscar Grant was not gay. His tragic death has nothing to do with the mission of this site., Why is JoinTheImpact involved in protests or anything else related to that case. This site is supposed to be about marriage equality, not involving itself in a non-gay related police shooting tragedy. Explain this please.

We are going to win this one conversation at a time. This thread is for ideas and resources to help people talk to their loved ones who might not believe in equal rights. I'll post a couple of arguments/rebuttals to get us started.
ARGUMENT: The Bible says that homosexuality is wrong. REBUTTAL: Things aren't always as they seem. Have a look at http://mormonsformarriage.com/?p=30 for some historical/cultural information. ARGUMENT: Only heterosexuals can reproduce, which is the purpose of marriage and greatest goal of family. REBUTTAL: Heterosexual unions are a SYMBOL of reproduction, which up until very recently has been crucial to a community's survival. Geriatric and otherwise infertile couples are allowed to marry; therefore reproduction is not a literal requirement. With a divorce rate of at least 50%, perhaps the modern world would do better by honoring love and commitment. Cheers, Carrie

I came to a shameful realization the other day. I've taken for granted that where I live (a progressive area of Vancouver, in Canada) gay people can be out and proud and married. My best girl friend and I had a "marriage" ceremony last May as a way of celebrating our 15 year friendship and our love. I love and trust Maya more than any person in the world and even though we don't have a sexual relationship I wanted to celebrate our union with a kind of wedding ceremony. We wear rings and I often call her my wife. We were never trying to make a mockery of marriage and definitely not same sex marriage, because I know how hard gay couples have fought for the right to wed. I guess I'm guilty of taking our Canadian progress for granted. East Vancouver is a progressive place that celebrates diversity and originality, but not everyone has this freedom.
I've decided from now on that I owe it to gay couples to actually step into the fight for equality for ALL. No more taking Canadian freedom for granted. With Dan Savage and jointheimpact to guide me I plan to have a larger part in struggle. |

I remember being in fundamentalist churches I used to attend as the pastors would demonize gays as the boogeyman etc. from the pulpit. I remember feeling guilty because I knew what he was saying was wrong. My brother is gay and when he first came out of the closet I congradualated him and told him that I was proud of him. Yet after I started attending churches I became fearful of "satan" and "evil" ways the "world" would destroy my faith and result in me going to hell. I didn't know anything different about God or Christianity--and the pastor sure as hell yelled aout it like he knew...years later I regret my former homophobia and I'm glad I have this shot to try again to learn to live out what Jesus taught - LOVE NOT HATE!

thank you for articulating an all-inclusive mission! In my two decades of activism I find that use of the word equality is a slippery slope. I vibrate with hope that this movement is about non-discrimination, i.e. equal access to our nation's social institutions. The origins of this same-sex marriage movement were to have it lay a foundation for future generations of GLbT, plus to draw out into the public domain the point of non-discrimination. In other words, to shed light upon the status quo attitudes that we all take for granted. So that rather than GLbT as second class citizens being "just the way it is", the public dialog asserts that GLbT are viable, vibrant, healthy contributions to daily life and to all of our futures. To discriminate against any one is to hold down the spirits of us all. We must shed light on America's long history of oppressors that is so normalized into our daily lives that the predominance of us know neither how or what to question, nor where to focus our efforts. However, same-sex marriage is a place to begin to de-throne the unquestioned status quo. Knowledge is power, and critical thinking is essential to bring what is possible and positive into the public domain, my friends, that is equality. To discriminate against any one is hold down us all; from within and without.
