Napa City Council
Considers the van Gorder Resolution
Affirming Equality for ALL
Please join us for at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 17th beginning at 3:30 PM at City Hall (955 School Street in Napa) as City Council will consider a very important resolution supporting full equality for all LGBT citizens. (A draft of the full resolution is included below.)

Our community asked Mark van Gorder to make this recommendation to the Council and he is taking a LOT of flack for representing our request. Some people in the community and the Napa Valley Register see this issue as unimportant and not City "business." They seem to think that downtown design and potholes are more important than our safety and full participation in society.
Click the link below to read the Register's "Opinion" piece that ran on Tuesday, March 9. (Note: they wrote their opinion without having seen the final draft of the resolution) http://www.napavalleyregister.com/articles/2009/03/10/opinion/editorial/doc49b5dc218edce016888175.txt

WE are the ones we've been waiting for!
Look, this isn't just a marriage issue. It's so much more than that. This is discrimination that not only denies our core civil rights, but by its very nature, gives credence to the idea that LGBT people are "immoral," "unequal" and don't deserve protection from hate. Anti-gay initiatives give people an excuse to act out their prejudices. Think of the hundreds of kids who are bullied at school every day because they are just trying to be themselves. Know that right here in Napa Valley people experience discrimination in the workplace for living an open and authentic life. Remember Matthew Shepherd and Gwen Araujo and Harvey Milk. Their legacies and our futures depend on us.

Barely a month after the passage of Proposition 8, in a town a scant 30 miles from Napa Valley, a lesbian woman, identified by a rainbow sticker on the bumper of her car, was gang-raped by four men who used homophobic epithets as they violently assaulted her for almost an hour, before leaving her naked in the street.

Folks, whether marriage is your issue or not, this is the FIGHT of our lives - and may very well be a fight FOR our lives, so please, please don't sit this one out!
Call to action!!

1) Send this link to your friends and ask them to forward it too!

2) Call and email members of the City Council urging them to support this important resolution. Remind them that we elected them to FULLY represent us and we expect them to stand with us on this. Let's please be sure they are flooded with input from our community and our supporters! It's important to keep the pressure on up until the time of the meeting! If they say they haven't seen the resolution, forward it to them! (The full text of the resolution is below.)

3) Show up for the City Council meeting on Tuesday March 17th at 3:30. We know (and they know) it's an inconvenient time for most of us who are working as productive citizens, but we need everyone (and your friends!) there. Please gather at 3:30 outside City Hall. We'll go in together when the council starts discussion of the resolution. There will probably be an opportunity for public comment, so your voice will be heard, as will those who oppose our freedoms. We have a strong and courageous ally in Mark van Gorder, so come stand together with us in asking Napa's City Council to say NO to discrimination!

DRAFT OF RESOLUTION

RESOLUTION R2009__

RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NAPA, STATE OF CALIFORNIA, AFFIRMING THE EQUALITY OF ALL FAMILIES

WHEREAS, the California Supreme Court is currently
deliberating the validity of Proposition 8 and the legal marriages of
36,000 Californians hang in the balance, the City of Napa ("City")
takes this opportunity to affirm the equality and validity of all
families; and

WHEREAS, a majority of Napa County voters rejected
Proposition 8 because it takes away a fundamental human right from a
minority group of people and is discriminatory at its essence; and

WHEREAS, the City celebrates the vast diversity of its citizens, seeks to be a safe, healthy and tolerant place for all citizens and their families, strives to be a community that offers equal opportunity, free from hate and all forms of discrimination, and recognizes and appreciates the significant contributions of its many lesbian and gay citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Napa, as follows:

1. The City does not support discrimination and finds that all people regardless of gender should be able to enter into the legal contract of marriage and receive the same social and legal benefits and recognition as conferred by the State of California.

2. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted by the City Council of the City of Napa at a public meeting of said City Council held on the____ day of______, 2009, by the following vote:
Through Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Fast for Equality!
Georgia Buck, a straight woman in Napa, is fasting for equality! She is doing this to encourage the City of Napa to adopt a equality resolution drafted by Councilman van Gorder which encourages the California Supreme Court to overturn Prop 8 because it violates civil rights and encourages human rights violations of a minority group of citizens.

Georgia is a Napa resident and local business owner who is "fasting for equality" and wants you to join her. Her fast started on Thursday and will continue until the City Council votes on Tuesday evening.

Georgia says that she is doing this because there are people out there who do not have the same rights that she does because of their sexual orientation and that is wrong.

Join Georgia by fasting with her and supporting her by attending the Napa City Council meeting to lobby passage of the resolution or by calling CIty Council members to encourage them to pass the resolution. Attend a protest, write a letter to your elected officials or talk to your friends who oppose equal rights. California is better than Prop 8.

Georgia Buck is standing up in the face of discrimination and trying to change the world. What will you do?

Here’s the plan:
We’re going to present President Barack Obama with an open letter encouraging him to make good on his campaign promises to the LGBT community and its supporters. It will be delivered to him on his first day in office. Our goal is to have the letter signed by 1,000,000 (or more) people.

Here’s how we’re going to do it and HOW YOU CAN HELP:

· Sign it yourself
· Take it to work, school, church, meetings, parties, etc. and have your friends and family sign it
· Return the document and signatures by January 10, 2009. Mail them to: Join The Impact - Napa PO Box 125 Napa, CA 94559-0125
· We’ll forward the documents to the national clearinghouse where they will be consolidated with those from throughout the country
· They’ll be presented to President Obama on his first day in office

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FOR EQUALITY NAPA COUNTY EVENT | DECEMBER 20, 2008 | 5PM
WHAT IS IT?
On December 20th, we ask that you join fellow Napans again for a nation-wide demonstration that will make an impact on the private sector. Candlelight vigils will be held at commercial centers in cities across the country in remembrance of the rights that once were for 18,000 marriages, and in honor of the rights that one day will be again - for EVERYONE.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Please take to your local commercial district at 5PM--be it a shopping mall, outdoor financial center, you name it.
  • This will be a peaceful demonstration in the spirit of the holidays.
  • We'll dress alike: make or buy a "Second Class Citizen" t-shirt.
  • This will be the culmination of our National Food Drive for Equality event (see below for details)
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

  • Hosting peaceful candlelight vigils
  • We will stay silent unless asked a question, we will not yell, instigate, or bare signs. Instead, we will let our shirts do the talking and our candles pay our respects.Bring candles (battery powered if you'll be huddling inside).
  • Singing and/or silence encouraged...chanting is not....keep it peaceful and in the holiday spirit.
