Hi everyone,
The organizers of the Nashville protest had a great meeting last night and we are ready to keep things moving along! We have some ideas that we are currently working on but none of them will succeed without the help of all of you. We are asking all of our GLBT and straight friends who were at the protest and all of you who couldn't attend as well to join us by going to www.myspace.com/431231556 and adding Impact! Equality to your friends list. We hope to soon have our own web site and other ways for us to all stay in touch but this is the start. |

As one of the organizers of Saturday's protest here in Nashville I keep getting asked "what comes next?" and we should have an answer for you real soon. Since we don't have any other information outlet set up on the web as of yet I ask that everyone keep checking back here and we will pass information along to you as we get it.
Saturday was just the start, there is a lot of hard work left to do, and we will need all of your help! |

Many of you who were at the Nashville protest probably remember a couple of guys who might have looked a bit out of place. They are SHARPS, Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice (don't believe everything you see on the Geraldo Show, the vast majority of skin heads are not racists) and are really good friend's of mine and my partners. One of them wrote a blog posting on his myspace page explaining his experience at the protest and I was very impressed and moved by it when I read it. I hope you will take the time to take a look. Just go to;
http://www.myspace.com/mikebrocks and click on the "view more" link next to the blog entry entitled "Proposition 8 Protest - A Story" It is great to hear what one of our straight friends thought of the event.

We need to educate people to the importance of the American principle of keeping the institutions of church and government separate and free. The following can be your introduction to Americans United for Separation of Church and State. You can join our Tennessee E-mail Network to keep abreast of legislation and activities. We need your help now and especially when the legislature convenes under Republican control.
Religious liberty, Teaching Evolution, Prayer in Schools. These will be some aspects of his three-month anthropological field studies in eastern Tennessee in a presentation by Michael Tidwell, a doctoral candidate in anthropology at Vanderbilt University. Discussion will follow. It will be held Saturday, November 22, from 2 to 3:30 pm at the Green Hills Public Library, sponsored by Nashville Chapter Americans United for Separation of Church and State. His insights are part of the Religion and Politics Project of the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture. The program is free. Information: (615) 646-9946. Further comments from Michael Tidwell: I will be discussing results from ethnographic fieldwork in east Tennessee. For three months this summer, I attended churches, civic meetings and public events in a small town east of Knoxville. Through talking to a variety of people and listening to thoughts and concerns, I came away with valuable insights into the debate over the separation of church and state in the United States. Specifically, I will share what I heard regarding prayer in schools, religious liberty and teaching evolution. The conclusions I draw from these experiences have important implications for the strategies adopted by people who would like to see religion and politics separated, and I hope they will encourage an interesting discussion. There are several places to park around the downtown area. The easiest to find is Commerce Garage (A & B are connected) 310 Commerce St Nashville, TN 37201 - (615) 255-6820. I am not sure what the rates will be. Once you find it drive around a few times & you will see many other lots in the area most are operated by Central Parking. Also there may be meter parking available. If the meter is bagged DO NOT park there. Here is info on meter parking in Nashville from Nashville.gov: Hours of enforcement on individual meters are displayed at the top inside portion of the meter. The meters are enforced from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Depending on the location, some meters are limited by a peak hour no parking from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., and 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is to allow the parking lane to be used for a moving traffic lane during morning and afternoon peak rush-hour demands. See you Saturday!!!!

Americans United for "Seperation"...? Try Separation (the correct spelling.) Looks much more professional.
Hope everyone will show up in Nashville. We'll be there!!! |
