Invite as many people as you can.
Bring homemade protest signs and accessories. Buy products (yard signs, bumper stickers, banners, etc.) and donate to the 'California Marriage Equality Act' ballot campaign.
Have refreshments: Bottled water, snacks, etc.

Remember: Please be respectful and civil with people who may disagree with you. Have police authorities with you during the protest/rally. This is to help keep civility and stability.
California has a huge diverse population and its up to this ballot initiative campaign to reach out and speak up for the Golden State's diversity.

What can you do to support marriage equality NOW? Speak to at least three people you know whether it be a friend, relative, or acquaintance from California. Keep up the conversation for months and don't give up.

Please note that this event is just a plan. Grassroots protests and rallies won't begin probably until the start of the 2010 Gubernatorial Election, which is next year.
But it never hurts to start grassroots conversations NOW and begin gathering supporters when the event comes. Take care!

Vigil and Buycott in Support of Gay Marriage
Saturday, December 20 2008 @ 05:00 PM
Santana Row
in front of Cinearts Theater
San Jose
Have you seen the "Milk" film yet? Hopefully you did not see it at CineArts at Santana Row. Why? Because CineArts is owned by people who gave a LOT of money to the Yes on 8 campaign.
In response, we would like to invite you to a candlelight vigil at CineArts. We encourage you to join us not only with a candle with a little dixie cup on the bottom to catch the wax, but bring some cash. We will provide very bright stickers to wear so we can be seen all over Santana Row. We can then go into the myriad of stores in that area and spend some money. A BUYCOTT! Doesn't have to be much, you can buy something for $1.50. The shoppers and store employees will see LGBT dollars. We will be shopping for a purpose!
Let us carry on Harvey Milk's legacy. We will be out, visible and speaking in terms people understand, money.

So I PMed JoinTheImpact, who said their mission statement prohibits boycotting of businesses because of the actions of individuals. Yet the events in my area (Palo Alto, CA and San Jose, CA) are about boycotting Cinemark.

Cinemark gave no money to defeat prop 8, and I am absolutely vehemently against boycotting a business because of the actions of individuals -- even CEOs -- in supporting the opposition. On the flip side, would you want people protesting your employers because you gave $ to defeat prop 8?

I don't have to worry about that -- but many people DO have to worry about it, and I guarantee you it'll hurt more people than it helps if we go down this road. The CEO of Cinemark isn't going to get fired over a few protests, but John or Jane who's got a gay daughter or friend or son or relative -- might be.

There are plenty of BUSINESSES who gave $ as BUSINESSES to pass prop 8. Let's boycott them.

Until then, this sympathetic straight person will wait for news that this is no longer occurring before joining ANY events in support of overturning prop 8.

Deirdre (pissed as hell)
