Prayers For Bobby
This was a film that anyone involved with PFLAG or a family coming to terms with a gay child should've have watched.
It was a story of a son coming to terms with the fact that he is gay. To him it is a sin and he doesn't know what to do. He tells his family and his mother does not accept this. She gets him therapy and says God can change him. More and more Bobby is sinking into a world of unacceptance by his mother. She says gay is what he has become and he tells her it is what he is. Eventually Bobby tells her to accept it or forget. At this point she says "she will not have gay son".
Bobby, not being able to handle the fact that he is not accepted, commits suicide by jumping off a bridge into the path of an 18-wheeler at the age of 21. The minister at his service condems his soul to hell for the lifestyle he lived. His mother still does not accept the fact that her son is gay and allows this to happen.
When she starts reading her son's journal she gets further insite into what her son went through. He was confused, torn, and felt unloved. She goes to a pastor at a church that she found in Bobby's journal. He found out that Bobby had attended there a few times. She tells the pastor that he is preaching in a way that makes people feel that "gay" should be accepted. He points out that the bible says things that aren't true today.
She finally goes to a PFLAG meeting and realizes that she was wrong. She realized that Bobby didn't become gay that he was gay at conception. She realized that Bobby was different. Mary Griffith, Bobby's mother, is an active supporter of gay and lesbian rights.
This is my call by joining PFLAG. I want to open doors of acceptance. I want to be there for youths and others coming out who feel alone and that no one will accept them. I want them to feel love, be hugged, and shown that they are okay. I want to support them with kind words. No one should commit suicide because they are gay. They are not wrong in how they feel.
