Kiss in Information:
We are two bloggers - David Badash and David Mailloux - who believe that any person anywhere should be able to kiss whomever they want, whenever they want.

We both believe that there's not enough love and affection in the world, because most people are afraid to show it. We should never be afraid of brief, unimposing displays of affection. There is nothing wrong with a hug, a kiss on the mouth, a kiss on the cheek.

Together, with the help of Willow Witte and the national Join The Impact group, we are coordinating a nationwide event on August 15, 2009 at 2 p.m., EDT (or 11 a.m., PDT) It's called "The Great Nationwide Kiss-In" and you're invited - all of you! - to either plan a Kiss-In event in your city or town, or simply participate in an existing one.

Okay, you ask, but what does this mean? What is a Kiss-In?

Well, it's quite simple. On the suggested date and time, in a public place - whether it's a park or plaza or popular thoroughfare in your city or town - you'll bring your husband or wife or partner or boyfriend or girlfriend or good friend, and at 2 p.m., you'll kiss. It's one of the simplest things in the world to do!

Why, you ask? Why are you doing this?

After incidents in San Antonio, TX, El Paso, TX and Salt Lake City, UT - where different gay and lesbian couples were harassed or detained by law enforcement or other people for the simple act of kissing in a public place - we need to make a strong statement to everyone everywhere: kissing is not a bad thing, nor has it ever been. It's not vulgar or inappropriate. It's a sign of affection that is as old as time itself. And it's a beautiful thing that we share with our loved ones every single day.

The more cities with corresponding events, and the more people who participate in those events, the stronger the statement.

You can read more about why we've chosen to coordinate this, by reading our blog entries below:

~Wear a White Knot for Marriage Equality~
The White Knot is the symbol for marriage equality. It takes two traditional symbols of marriage—white and tying the knot—and combines them in a simple way to show support for the right of gays and lesbians to marry. All loving couples deserve the same legal rights, benefits, and respect that civil marriage bestows. Visibility is the goal. One, after another, after another, after another, these white knots will bear silent but eloquent testimony to a future America where marriage equality is a reality. David Bender, Politically Direct with David Bender on Air America Wear your Knot and tell people what it stands for, conversation is the key...

Invite as many people as you can.
Bring homemade protest signs and accessories. Buy products (yard signs, bumper stickers, banners, etc.) and donate to the 'California Marriage Equality Act' ballot campaign.
Have refreshments: Bottled water, snacks, etc.

Remember: Please be respectful and civil with people who may disagree with you. Have police authorities with you during the protest/rally. This is to help keep civility and stability.
California has a huge diverse population and its up to this ballot initiative campaign to reach out and speak up for the Golden State's diversity.

What can you do to support marriage equality NOW? Speak to at least three people you know whether it be a friend, relative, or acquaintance from California. Keep up the conversation for months and don't give up.

Please note that this event is just a plan. Grassroots protests and rallies won't begin probably until the start of the 2010 Gubernatorial Election, which is next year.
But it never hurts to start grassroots conversations NOW and begin gathering supporters when the event comes. Take care!

"JOCC NEWS"

PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW!
We're trying to get at least one more station to air the March 5th hearings where the Supreme Court Justices will hear arguments for and against overturning Prop 8, as well as what to do with the 18, 000 marriages that took place between June and November 2008. After doing some research, the IEQ Steering Committee has determined that C-Span is a good station to make this request. At present time, only the California Channel is scheduled to air the hearings--a channel that many people don't have.
Please copy and paste the following letter into a Word document, print it out, sign it, and fax it to C-Span at 202-737-6226 beginning Monday, February 23rd. We'd like the letters to continue from Feb 23 to March 1st (however, please only fax one letter per person). Thank you so much for your continued support for marriage equality.
Dear C-Span Scheduling Directors:
On March 5th, the California Supreme court will be hearing oral arguments about Prop 8, which bans same-sex marriage in California , as well as determine what will happen to the 18,000 same-sex marriages that took place between June and November 2008. Since it is likely that the courts decision on this historic issue will set legal and political precedence, this case is relevant to the California State Constitution. The courts decision will have implications for how gay men, lesbians, and transgendered individuals are treated by the California government, and their decision may even guide other states regarding this issue. As a viewer of your station, I'd like to request that you broadcast the hearing on March 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Having it broadcast on C-Span will give more Californians the opportunity to watch this important hearing, and since this issue is of interest to both conservatives and progressives, it would most likely boost your viewing audience on that day. Thank you for your consideration.

***Bring a candle and sign,
so people know why we are there.***
As stated recently by the Courage Campaign, "If we win, the same people who backed Prop 8 will find another way to undermine equal rights. If we lose, we will need to take our case to the people of California again. No matter what, we'll eventually need to win full equality under federal law."
What: Bring a battery operated candle (the city of Rancho has not allowed open flame candles at prior events), a sign and your friends. The Eve of Justice Rally in Riverside the night before the hearings had approximately 250 people in attendance. If each one of us brings one additional person to this event, we will definitely let the IE and others know we are part of their community and we expect to be treated equally.
