Invite as many people as you can.
Bring homemade protest signs and accessories. Buy products (yard signs, bumper stickers, banners, etc.) and donate to the 'California Marriage Equality Act' ballot campaign.
Have refreshments: Bottled water, snacks, etc.

Remember: Please be respectful and civil with people who may disagree with you. Have police authorities with you during the protest/rally. This is to help keep civility and stability.
California has a huge diverse population and its up to this ballot initiative campaign to reach out and speak up for the Golden State's diversity.

What can you do to support marriage equality NOW? Speak to at least three people you know whether it be a friend, relative, or acquaintance from California. Keep up the conversation for months and don't give up.

Please note that this event is just a plan. Grassroots protests and rallies won't begin probably until the start of the 2010 Gubernatorial Election, which is next year.
But it never hurts to start grassroots conversations NOW and begin gathering supporters when the event comes. Take care!

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FOR EQUALITY | DECEMBER 20, 2008 | 5PM
WHAT IS IT?
On December 20th, we ask that you join us again for a nation-wide demonstration that will make an impact on the private sector. Candlelight vigils will be held at commercial centers in cities across the country in remembrance of the rights that once were for 18,000 marriages, and in honor of the rights that one day will be again - for EVERYONE.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Please take to your local commercial district at 5PM--be it a shopping mall, outdoor financial center, you name it.
  • This will be a peaceful demonstration in the spirit of the holidays.
  • We'll dress alike: make or buy a "Second Class Citizen" t-shirt.
  • This will be the culmination of our National Food Drive for Equality event (see below for details)
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

  • Hosting peaceful candlelight vigils
  • We will stay silent unless asked a question, we will not yell, instigate, or bare signs. Instead, we will let our shirts do the talking and our candles pay our respects.Bring candles (battery powered if you'll be huddling inside).
  • Singing and/or silence encouraged...chanting is not....keep it peaceful and in the holiday spirit.

Outdoor Area near the Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Starbucks at 125 S. Market Street near Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park.
Sara - siliconvalleyagainst8@gmail.com Meeting times:
3:45 - Meet in front of Starbuck's for a procession and vigil in front of St. Joseph's Cathedral.

4:45 - Meet at the Starbuck's for the Candlelight Vigil and Procession. We will silently walk from the Starbuck's, around Cesar Chavez Park and gather in front of the MOMA, where we will stop for a Speak Out, where anyone who would like to speak will have the opportunity to do so.

We also need people to hold large banners with LGBT-positive messages. We have 16 bannes that are the size of twin extra long sheets and each need to be held by 2 people, so we are hoping to get 32 people willing to carry the banners. Please e-mail siliconvalleyagainst8@gmail.com for more information or if you would like to volunteer to carry a banner.

Bring candles - dripless candles work best, and you can put them in a small cup to make it easier to hold them.

Please help us get out the word!

Marriage Equality Silicon Valley
(please visit our website for more information)
Meet at 5:00 PM in front of the theater. (There is a possibility that we may not be allowed to gather here, so our alternate meeting location is on the sidewalk at Olsen Drive and Winchester Blvd.)

Bring candles. We recommend that you bring a small cup or bottomless plastic bottle to protect the candle from the breeze. We will also have a limited number of candles available.

In addition to Lighting Up the Night for Equality, we will be conducting a BUYCOTT. We will provide brightly colored stickers for you to wear, and when you spend your money at the shops in Santana Row, the merchants will know that they are receiving LGBT dollars.

nikrayesj Photos up for LUTN San Jose 0 Dec 21 2008, 11:39 PM EST by nikrayesj
Thread started: Dec 21 2008, 11:39 PM EST  Watch
We had a modest but enthusiastic turnout -- 50 to 75 people--and had a wonderfully positive experience amongst all the holiday revelers at the Cesar de Chavez Plaza Christmas in the Park, in downtown San Jose. Craig was there with his magnificent signs. Sara and friends lit up the night with their smiles and the passers-by and motorists gave us lots and lots of thumbs ups and supportive honks. Photos can be seen here at jointheimpact.com in the following album:

deirdresm The Cinemark Protest event is Bad and Wrong 0 Dec 20 2008, 12:24 AM EST by deirdresm
Thread started: Dec 20 2008, 12:24 AM EST  Watch
So I PMed JoinTheImpact, who said their mission statement prohibits boycotting of businesses because of the actions of individuals. Yet the events in my area (Palo Alto, CA and San Jose, CA) are about boycotting Cinemark.

Cinemark gave no money to defeat prop 8, and I am absolutely vehemently against boycotting a business because of the actions of individuals -- even CEOs -- in supporting the opposition. On the flip side, would you want people protesting your employers because you gave $ to defeat prop 8?

I don't have to worry about that -- but many people DO have to worry about it, and I guarantee you it'll hurt more people than it helps if we go down this road. The CEO of Cinemark isn't going to get fired over a few protests, but John or Jane who's got a gay daughter or friend or son or relative -- might be.

There are plenty of BUSINESSES who gave $ as BUSINESSES to pass prop 8. Let's boycott them.

Until then, this sympathetic straight person will wait for news that this is no longer occurring before joining ANY events in support of overturning prop 8.

Deirdre (pissed as hell)
