Decline 2 Sign

OUR RIGHTS ARE UNDER ATTACK. YOU CAN HELP

A coalition of radical right wing zealots are attempting a petition process to remove over 250 rights included in the Domestic Partnership Expansion Act of 2009. Our opponents must get about 120,000 signatures to get Referendum 71 on the ballot. If Referendum 71 does make the ballot, you will have to vote YES on 71 to protect Domestic Partnerships.

A strong coalition of organizations are working together to spread the word to DECLINE TO SIGN 71. Organizations such as Join the Impact, Equal Rights Washington, Fuse and many others are working hard to get the word out.

Please join our fan page on Facebook so we can communicate with you as the campaign develops http://www.facebook.com/pages/Decline-to-Sign-71/79860412479

Here are some ways YOU can help

1) Take the pledge not to sign http://eqfed.org/campaign/DeclineToSignPet_71

2)Talk to your friends and neighbors and ask them not to sign petitions for referendum 71. While you are at it, tell them that if the referendum does make the ballot we will have to VOTE YES on 71 to protect Domestic Partnership rights. (Confusing, right?)

3) Get creative. Are you a film maker? Make an Internet commercial. Are you a graphic designer? Make some awesome signs, logos, t-shirts, etc. Are you a good writer? Write a letter to the editor asking people to decline to sign 71. Use your imagination, but what ever you do, do not remain silent.

5) I hate to do this, but we need money, lots and lots of money. Please consider donating to Equal Rights Washington's Political Action Committee. If we concentrate our resources through their PAC we will be far more powerful than if we splinter it throughout the community. Here is a link to that https://secure.ga4.org/01/donate_2009_PAC

6) If you do encounter someone gathering signatures for referendum 71, DON'T SIGN, but be kind. Take the opportunity to discuss how important Domestic Partnerships are for your family, friends and neighbors. If you see other people signing petitions, remember it is against state law to interfere with someone's right to sign petitions. You can politely ask them not to. You can try to win their heart and mind (smiles work wonders in the heart department), but you can not do anything to restrict them from actually signing the petition.

7) Most importantly, have fun with this. I grew up in Iowa, and learned from a young age that political campaigns can be a blast. You will meet new people, stretch your horizons, realize new and innovative ways to reach people, and best of all, you will make the world a better place.

Keep spreading the word. Thank you all so much!

LAST WEEK OF JANUARY: WA STATE ACTION ALERT!!!!

The Domestic Partnership & Marriage Equality Bills Have Been Filed - We Need To Ensure Safe Passage!
Equal Rights Washington & Join the Impact Need Your Help!!!
In the past couple of weeks, Join The Impact has been working with Equal Rights Washington, the State's leading LGBT advocacy organization, to promote the 2009 Domestic Partnership Expansion Bill and Marriage Equality Bill. These bills have now been filed!!!

Here is the vision: Everyone agrees that marriage equality is the ultimate goal, and that Washington's families will not have all the protections and equal treatment they deserve until civil marriage rights for same-sex couples are secured. We must do our work with smarts and responsibility to ensure these rights become a reality! The Domestic Partnership bills are set up to provide immediate protections for Washington's families, which is especially important during an economic crisis. The Domestic Partnership bills are an excellent opportunity to talk about marriage equality. Through the DP bills, we are able to start conversations with people from all different backgrounds (including elected officials) about the importance of marriage equality. Domestic Partnerships are incredibly important to protecting LGBT families now, but they will not confer the 1,138 federal protections of marriage nor social equality that comes with marriage rights. So as we work together to protect families we also work together to educate the public and the legislature to build marriage equality majorities.

Please take a moment to show your support for these bills today, and do your part in educating people on the importance of both Domestic Partnerships and Marriage Equality.
Here are two easy and effective ways to take action:

http://eqfed.org/campaign/lettersforequality Write a letter to the editor in support of equality in Washington!

http://eqfed.org/campaign/DP_2009_jointheimpact Write a letter in support of the 2009 DP Expansion Bill to your elected officials!

We'll post fact sheets and press releases as soon asERW gets them from our legislative allies.

Has it been decided yet where the food that is donated will go? Also, i saw that some groups are putting stickers on the cans to shwo that is was donated by the LGBT community. i thought that was clever to spread the word. i'll be out of town beginning Dec 21 but i'm willing to help before then.
