Congress Approves Gay Marriage Law (El Pais)

Spain Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage (NY Times)

On June 30th, 2005, Spain became the third European nation to approve a gay marriage law. This day changed Spanish history forever. The Spanish Congress approved it by a vote of 187 in favor and 147 against the law (El Pais, June 30, 2005).

During the speech following the passing of the law, the president of Spain, Jose Luis Zapatero, gave a speech where he said, "We are widening the opportunity of happiness for our neighbors, for our coworkers, for our friends, for our families... this is liberty's triumph."
