Congratulations to Dan Cooke from Moorpark College in
Moorpark, California for submitting the winning T-Shirt design!
17 designs were entered in the T-Shirt competition, and Design #1 won hands down with 35% of your votes! Design 6 came in second with 15% of the votes, and Design 2 came in third with 12%. Thank you to everyone that entered!

Because there is a lot involvedin creating and selling shirts (taking in orders, printing, shipping, returns, etc) we have outsourced this process to cafepress. They allowed us to offer you many different types of shirts (short sleeve, long sleeve, hoodie, etc) that you can wear no matter what the weather is like in your city. Of course, some styles are more expensive than others, but if you're on a budget, make sure you check out the shirt that is less than $10! Also, if you are part of a gay/straight alliance or similar organization, you might want to think about processing one order as a group to save money on shipping. Also, you'll want to order your shirt early so you don't have to pay forexpedited shipping in order to getit before the event on January 27th.

Equality on Campus Day FAQ

What is Equality on Campus Day?
Equality on campus Day is an event for high school and college students across the country to raise awareness for LGBT rights, particularly marriage equality. Students will wear the same shirt to school on January 27th to raise visibility. Sometime during the day, each school will have their participating students meet for a group picture. Group pictures will then be submitted to school yearbooks and newsletters.

I’m straight. Can I still participate?
Yes, of course! This event is not only for people of the LGBT community; it is for everyone that believes in equality.

Can teachers participate too?
Yes. If teachers would like to wear the shirt to school to show their support for the cause, they are more than welcome to do so if their school allows them to.

I live in a country outside of the United States. Can I still participate?
Yes, definitely! We have gotten a few responses from students in different countries. If you would like to coordinate this event at your school, please send an email to eross@studentsforequality.com to get more information. Please remember that you will need to allow more time for shipping.

The shirts are too expensive. Can you lower the price?
There are lots of different styles of tops you can purchase at various prices. The cheapest one we have available is listed for under $10. Unfortunately we are unable to lower the price of the shirts. Here are some ideas for people that are low on funds:
  • Order your shirt early so you don’t have to pay for rushed shipping.
  • Order your shirts as a group to save money on shipping.
  • See if your school gay/straight alliance can cover all or some of the cost. ( Some gay/straight alliances are event preordering the shirts for people and then selling them to students afterwards).
  • Have a fundraiser. Here are some ideas:
    • Just ask for donations. Some people are willing to give money to a good cause without expecting something in return. You never know unless you ask.
    • Put on a drag show! You can either sell tickets, or just ask for tips.
    • Have a dinner party, and ask people to buy a dinner ticket. It works best if you make something cheap and easy like spaghetti.
    • Buy candy in bulk and sell it for a profit.
    • Sell 50/50 tickets. This is a raffle where you sell tickets and the winner gets half of the money raised. You get the rest.

Can I make my own shirt?
You can make your own shirt; however we encourage you to get the official Equality on Campus Day t-shirt for the following reasons:
  • We will be more visible if we wear identical shirts in unity. As we disburse throughout the day to go to class, people will quickly notice that you are part of the event as soon as they see your shirt with the official logo on it. If you have your own design on your shirt, it will not be as noticeable to people since they would not have seen the same image worn by other students on campus. We believe that we will send a more powerful message with unity, and we will have strength in numbers.
  • The proceeds from the shirt sales will be going to Lambda Legal in the fight to revoke Proposition 8. This means we are putting our money where our mouth is, and we are actually doing something constructive that can really make a difference in the fight for equality. We can protest and wave signs all we want, but it’s really the court judges that will make the final decision. The money earned will help us fight the marriage equality battle in the courts.

It’s too cold in my city to only wear a shirt. Is there anything else I can do?
There are a few things you can do:
1. Wear a jacket over the shirt. Even though people won’t see the shirt outside, they will see it when you take your jacket off in class.
2. Wear a long sleeve shirt underneath the Equality on Campus Day Shirt.
3. Order the Equality on Campus Day hoodie.

I don’t have a credit card. Can I order the shirt with cash or a money order?
All of our shirt sales go through cafepress, and unfortunately they are unable to take cash or money orders. Here are a few ideas on what you can do if you don’t have a credit or debit card.
  • Ask a parent or friend to order the shirt for you.
  • If your school has a gay/straight alliance or similar group, see if they can order the shirt for you.
  • Ask you local gay and lesbian center if they can order the shirt for you.

Where is the money from the shirt sales going?
The proceeds from the shirt sales will be going to Lambda Legal to help in the fight to revoke Proposition 8 in CA.

We’re required to wear uniforms at my school. Can I still wear the shirt?
We want everyone to participate in this event; however we do not encourage anyone to break the rules at their school. If you are required to wear a uniform, check with your school to see if they can make an exception for this event. If not, don’t be discouraged. You can always get a group of people to change into the shirt after school for a group photo!

Hi:
I just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for your efforts in the struggle for equality. I am inviting couples from all over the country to join me for a marriage equality celebration in NH on Jan. 1st, when the laws in New Hampshire change to allow same-sex marriage. We will perform legal ceremonies for the couples planning to tie the knot and have a reception with dinner and dancing to follow. We are also going to do a Meet and Greet party and New Year's Eve party on the 30th and 31st of Dec. Hope you can join us. Spread the word. We want as many couples who are ready to marry to make Jan. 1st their date. We'll broadcast live on the internet so the world can see that people will not be discouraged by what happened in California and Maine. Love will prevail. Let's all celebrate in unison and start 2010 off properly, with equal rights for all. Open to all supporters of gay rights.
