As LGBT Americans, we work hard, take care of our families, and pay our taxes every year. Yet, our families are not included in the very policies we help fund. Our loved ones are treated like legal strangers and denied the economic protections given to our heterosexual counterparts.
Each year Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) has taken to post offices throughout the nation as people file their taxes to educate the public about the injustices our families face as we file our Federal taxes each year. They asked us to participate with them this year, and members of the JTI wiki submitted and voted this idea into the #2 slot (
http://jointheimpact.wetpaint.com/page/Event+Ideas), so of course we said JTI would love to be part of it! Additionally we're pleased to announce that the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) will be joining in the effort as well.
JTIMA, our Boston area based colleagues, have been hard at work planning Tax Day Actions and created an amazing resource for the community to find locations for Tax Day Actions and to find out how they can get involved. This website,
www.taxday2009.com will serve as the primary hub of information for all three organizations who've come together to organize for Tax Day.
Tax Day Actions are a fantastic way to reach the movable middle about how we're affected by laws that don't recognize our relationships. They can be effective by organizing a couple of friends to go to your local post office, or can be as elaborately organized as the Boston Tea Party, costumes and all, that will take place in Boston.
