Day of Decision

The State of California awaits the State Supreme Court decision on whether Proposition 8 will stand. The court will give 24-hours notice of when they will issue their decision and across the state and nation, our community will respond to the ruling - win or lose. On the Day of the Decision, local community gatherings will provide an outlet for our emotions, show our continuing support for marriage equality, contextualize this moment in the larger civil rights struggle and prepare for taking the necessary next steps forward towards securing civil marriage equality at the state and federal levels.

Blog: The Day of Decision on Prop 8
Author: Michael A. Jones (Change.org)
As a means of gearing up for the upcoming California State Supreme Court ruling on Proposition 8, a host of LGBT rights activists and organizations have launched "The Day of Decision," a nationwide call to organize demonstrations and rallies across the U.S. on the day that the Court announces its opinion over whether Prop 8 is valid or discriminatory. As the organizers call it, this day will either be a day of "celebration" or a day of "protest."

Robin Tyler, one of the original plaintiffs in the case (along with her wife, Diane Olson), is one of the co-organizers of the action. Here's the reason why this is coming together, in her words:
"Win or lose, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community & our allies must respond immediately to the forthcoming California Supreme Court decision on whether to invalidate Proposition 8...We've seen a tremendous outpouring from LGBT and allied individuals and organizations who wanted to join together in unity the night of the decision regardless of the outcome."

The site that organizers have launched, Day of Decision, is up and running and offers people the opportunity to sign up to host a "Day of Decision" rally in their community. There are sample downloadable posters, flyers, and more to help folks organize locally to respond to a Court decision that will clearly have national implications. Towleroad already lists that a few organizations have signed on as co-sponsors, including Join the Impact, Centerlink, (the National Association of LGBT Community centers), and Metropolitan Community Churches.

Check out the site. And if you're interested in staying in the loop, join the Day of Decision google group here. Together, we can all respond with unity regardless of whether the California State Supreme Court invalidates Prop 8, or adjudicates discrimination.

Let's Press on For More Victories!!

In the wake of the Iowa court's courageous action for equal marriage rights on Friday, and now, the Vermont legislature's over-riding their anti-gay governor, there is real political momentum which could prompt the California court to rule in our favor.

While justices often pretend that they rule only on the narrow merits of law and precedent, the reality is that they often respond to political pressure. Iowa and Vermont have each given us powerful assists in this.

Now it's the turn of people outside of Iowa and Vermont to do our jobs!

The California Supreme Court decision on Prop 8 – on a weekday between now and June 3rd – is probably the next big event on the marriage equality issue. The plan in over 35 cities is to have "Day of Decision" actions the night the court gives its ruling – either celebrations or protests, depending on how the court rules.

Go to www.DayOfDecision.org to see if your city is organizing a Day Of Decision event. If it is, contact the organizers using the info on the site and offer them your help – they'll be glad you did! If your city does not have an event listed yet, fill out the on-line form and volunteer to become an organizer – we'll be happy to walk you through the steps you need to organize an event. We have press releases and several different designs of posters in English and Spanish and in various sizes which you can customize with your city's information.

Let's carry the pro-gay momentum of Iowa and Vermont forward!!
