Washington - Join the Impact This 4th of July help save our state's Domestic Partnership Law Washington - Join the Impact
As we approach the Fourth of July weekend, it is a time to be thankful for the freedoms we have, and mindful of those we could lose. The attack on Domestic Partnership rights posed by Referendum 71 threatens our families’ ability to plan for their long term security, especially in the event of sicknessor death.Holiday weekends are a perfect time to talk to friends and family about our important relationships, and the protections that Domestic Partnerships provide. Here is an on-line Take-Action Kit you can access prior to the festivities to save our Domestic Partnership Law from repeal:
  • Print out and take Decline to Sign Pledge Forms with you to the Fourth of July picnic. Ask people who haven’t yet pledged to decline to sign online to sign pledge by filling out this form and return your forms to Washington Families Standing Togethervia mail to: PO Box 12216, Seattle, WA 98102. Besides the picnic this weekend, collect pledges at your church or synagogue social hour, farmers markets, and other events. Our opponents will be actively collecting signatures at 4th of July tea-bagging events throughout Washington. I challenge you to collect more than them. For pledge forms, visit www.wafst.org and click on the handouts button at the top. Your help is vitally important. Thank you!
  • Print out a copy of this PLACARD available on-lineas apdf to place on the table with the Decline to Sign Pledge sheets. Post it in your window, or if you are allowed, at your desk at work.Washington - Join the Impact

  • Write a Letter to your local newspaperExplain in personal terms what the domestic partnership law means to your family or people that you love. Ask people to join you in declining to sign referendum 71 petitions. You’ll love our letter writing tool.

OUR RIGHTS ARE UNDER ATTACK. YOU CAN HELP.

A coalition of radical right wing zealots are attempting a petition process to remove over 250 rights included in the Domestic Partnership Expansion Act of 2009. Our opponents must get about 120,000 signatures for Referendum 71 to appear on the ballot. If Referendum 71 does make the ballot, you will have to vote YES on 71 to protect Domestic Partnerships.

Washington Families Standing Together (WAFST) is a strong coalition of organizations working together to spread the word to DECLINE TO SIGN 71. Organizations such as Join the Impact, Equal Rights Washington, Fuse and many others are working hard to get the word out.

Please join our fan page on Facebook so we can communicate with you as the campaign develops http://www.facebook.com/pages/Decline-to-Sign-71/79860412479

Here are some ways YOU can help

1) Take the pledge not to sign http://eqfed.org/campaign/DeclineToSignPet_71

2)Talk to your friends and neighbors and ask them not to sign petitions for referendum 71. While you are at it, tell them that if the referendum does make the ballot we will have to VOTE YES on 71 to protect Domestic Partnership rights. (Confusing, right?)

3) Get creative. Are you a film maker? Make an Internet commercial. Are you a graphic designer? Make some awesome signs, logos, t-shirts, etc. Are you a good writer? Write a letter to the editor asking people to decline to sign 71. Use your imagination, but what ever you do, do not remain silent.

5) Please consider donating to Washington Families Standing Together. If we concentrate our resources through their PAC we will be far more powerful than if we splinter it throughout the community. Here is a link to that https://secure.ga4.org/01/donate_2009_PAC

6) If you do encounter someone gathering signatures for referendum 71, DON'T SIGN, but be kind. Take the opportunity to discuss how important Domestic Partnerships are for your family, friends and neighbors. If you see other people signing petitions, remember it is against state law to interfere with someone's right to sign petitions. You can politely ask them not to. You can try to win their heart and mind (smiles work wonders in the heart department), but you can not do anything to restrict them from actually signing the petition.

7) Most importantly, have fun with this. I grew up in Iowa, and learned from a young age that political campaigns can be a blast. You will meet new people, stretch your horizons, realize new and innovative ways to reach people, and best of all, you will make the world a better place.

Keep spreading the word. Thank you all so much!

Look for the Rainbow Flags!!

There are many reasons why LGBT people should support immigrant rights, from the desire to support others who are facing hate and discrimination to achieving reforms crucial to the LGBT community itself:

** It is in the direct interest of LGBT people to demand the reform of asylum laws so that gay people fleeing vicious repression abroad can find a safe haven in the U.S.

** Many Lesbians and Gays are in bi-national relationships where one partner is a U.S. citizen and the other is a foreign national. Unlike heterosexual couples, we can't sponsor our spouses for naturalization.

** The U.S. is one of only 13 countries that prohibit HIV+ people from immigrating into it. True immigration reform would include ending this discrimination against HIV+ people.

Many commentators brand undocumented immigrants as "illegal," but the label misses the point. Are the laws themselves moral?

It wasn't too many years ago that gays were considered "illegal" – until the Lawrence v. Texas Supreme Court decision "legalized" us. Jim Crow racism was "legal" for the vast bulk of U.S. history, as were prohibitions against equality for women and many minorities.

Yes we can fight for equality for all! ¡Sí se puede!
