A symbol of equality...
because everyone should
be able to tie the knot.

The White Knot is the symbol for marriage equality. It takes two traditional symbols of marriage—white and tying the knot—and combines them in a simple way to show support for the right of gays and lesbians to marry. All loving couples deserve the same legal rights, benefits, and respect that civil marriage bestows. Find out about getting and making
White Knots.

It may seem like a small thing, but imagine the white knot gaining the pervasiveness and instant recognition of the AIDS Ribbon. Wear your white knot to work, to school, to your place of worship. Celebrities will be wearing white knots down red carpets this awards season. Together, we will keep the topic at the top of people's minds and keep the conversation going.

Another Cause, Another Ribbon

By Brooks Barnes
The fight against AIDS has the red ribbon. Cancer has, among other things, the yellow Livestrong bracelet. So perhaps it was inevitable that the campaign to legalize gay marriage would get its own fashion accessory: a snippet of white ribbon tied into a knot. The entertainment industry and celebrities — gay friendly but also a group that rarely turns down a ride on good bandwagon — are already jumping on board. At the recent premiere of the movie “Twilight” about two dozen of the knotted ribbons could be seen dangling from designer bags and pinned to suit lapels. Celebrities like Ricki Lake, Lucy Lawless (a.k.a. “Xena: Warrior Princess”) and T.R. Knight (of “Grey’s Anatomy”) have been photographed wearing them. The knots were created two weeks ago by a Los Angeles gay marriage advocate as a response to Proposition 8, which repealed the right for gay men and lesbians to marry in California. Frank Voci, whose primary job is running a consultancy for interactive media companies, said he got the idea after protests died down. His ultimate goal: to use a Web site (whiteknot.org) to recruit people sympathetic to the cause in less liberal locales. “We needed a symbol, something to keep the conversation going,” he said.

Small Groups & Special Events
If you are planning an event or are a member of a group that would like White Knots, we can provide knots if you cover the shipping charges. Pleasecontact uswith information about your group or event and the quantity you will need.
Large Groups & Bulk
We are working with several suppliers who can mass produce White Knots for you. Costs range from $0.43 - $0.12 per knot depending on the quantity ordered. Pleasecontact usfor more information about these suppliers.
How to make a White Knot:
  1. Start with a 6 inch piece of white ribbon. Widths between 3/4 inch and 1 inch work best.
  2. Tie a double knot in the center of the ribbon. Pulling the first knot tight will line up the ends of the ribbon nicely.
  3. Cut triangles into the ends of the ribbon. This will help prevent fraying.
  4. Pin it on and you're good to go.
