A DAY WITHOUT GAYS/ recap
The following is a recap of what was achieved on A DAY WITHOUT GAYS.
Our goal was to raise awareness that Gays and Lesbians are being denied full equality in this country, including the right to get married. On that note...
On our Facebook site, we received 1 million impressions, signed up 250,000 participants and posted 20,000 comments. We were featured and/or interviewed by most of the national and local media, including ABC News, KABC, KNBC, KTTV, and many others. We were interviewed by most of the major radio networks, from CNN radio, NPR News, Air America, Pacifica and Sirius. We were mentioned throughout national and local press, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and the San Diego Chronicle. We had commentaries on CNN.com, PSAs appeared on Logoonline and we were featured in countless blogs across the web.
This was always intended as a symbolic protest, our proverbial Boston Tea Party. We never expected to make a huge impact on businesses or the economy. That said, major restaurant chains informed their employees about the event, countless business shut down, tens of thousands of employees and students did not show up for work or school, and hundreds of teachers across the nation did not teach. In addition, countless individuals informed us that they called in sick, took vacation, closed their businesses, boycotted restaurants and cafes, and stepped off the grid.
We were joined by many other individual organizers, including Sean Hetherington, Ryan Bauer-Walsh, Brock Ogletree, Jamie McGonnigal, and more. We were co-sponsored by other grassroots organizations, including Join the Impact, the Courage Campaign and BAMN. We were trying to make a difference. We believe we achieved that yesterday. We will not quit until the honeymoon.

The election of Barack Obama changed our beliefs about the potential of our lives, our nation, and of the people who are America. President-elect Obama’s victory was not just the victory of a gifted politician. It was a victory for the movement that was determined to see America elect its first black president. A victory for the millions of white people who put...

Assessing "Day Without a Gay"
I made a post a little earlier that was rather critical, but that AP thing.
Has there ever been an Associated Press story about a national Gay Without a Day or something? Oh I know there are national days devoted to raising awareness about gay people, but have people paid attention? If this is progress then it should be hailed as such. Nothing wrong with a start.

gay without a gay is unreasonable
I will be doing the gay without a gay, but a lot of people will find it unreasonable and just impossible to do. gay own companies can't afford a day of in this economy. And not all of us have the kind of job that we can take a day off, without getting fired. I am not sure what it will accomplish. I think every gay person and gay supporter should wear a pink t-shit or shirt to work (all day). it would make a point, without risking your job.

‘A DAY WITHOUT A GAY’ CAMPAIGN page 1
In support of Same Sex Marriage & Equal Rights 'Join The Impact' is calling for - 'A DAY WITHOUT A GAY' www.daywithoutagay.org a community action happening Nation-wide WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10th 2008, International Human Rights Day. Instead of calling in sick to work, volunteers are asked to 'Call In Gay'. Instead of being 'sick', in support of Same Sex Marriage, volunteers will be donating their time, when they would normally be working, and volunteer for a charity organization of their choice.
For those looking for a volunteer project to do WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2008 – ‘A DAY WITHOUT A GAY’ CAMPAIGN.
It is now the holiday season and a number of food banks are hurting for lack of donations. Here is my idea: Gather a few friends and during the day on WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2008 go to local grocery stores, drug stores, 99-cent stores, Target, Rite-Aid, Save-On etc. As customers are about to enter the store, ask if while they are shopping to please donate non-perishable food items for the food bank (of your choice.) At the end of the day, take the items you’ve collected and deliver them to that food bank. Many food banks will even give you donation barrels for your food drive.
Create a ¼ page hand out ‘shopping list’ that explains you are collecting non-parishable food items for (your choice) food bank in need of donations for the holiday season. On the flyer list the contact info. of the food bank, along with the suggested ‘shopping list’ items: CANNED FOOD - soup, vegetables, apple sauce, fruit, tomato paste & sauce, pasta sauce, beans, tuna, canned meat, etc.; PACKAGED FOODS – nutrition supplement (ENSURE, BOOST), juice, pasta, prepared meals, dry cereal, hot cereal, rice, noodles, packaged soup, cake/cookie/brownie mixes, granola bars, baby food etc. TOILETRIES – soap, shampoo, deodorant, tooth paste, tooth brushes, mouth wash, tampons, shaving cream, hand lotion, etc.

No Gays for a Day
I think this idea is GREAT ! I thought of it myself awhile back after seeing the movie "A Day Without Mexicans" . BUT, I have a problem with the planned date - Monday December 15th . Here's why - There are two big "gay" professions in which Mondays are traditionally the day off for people. Those being Hairdressers AND Theater. If this is to be effective it has to be done when it will impact people and businesses who actually rely on gay people.
Plus, though I'm in neither of those two occupations, my day off is Monday anyway and I'd rather it be on a day when I can help make that impact.

Idea for activism on "Day without a gay"
I think not purchasing anything on 10th is a great idea, but to add to it, going out to the malls and promoting why you are NOT spending is even better. This "culture jamming" idea comes from our friends at Adbusters who promote the international "Buy Nothing Day" every year (day after Thanksgiving). While they promote not spending they go to malls and encourage others not to spend as well. They make signs, do skits, tons of other creative things, and promote their cause. This would translate well to our goals. Activists should reach out on Dec. 10th and promote this site. Go to malls print "fake dollars" printed with this website, quick mission statement about marriage equality, and "this is gay money that is NOT being spent, but could be!" on them. Then, pass them out, leave them behind, drop them over food courts--basically get out into the public and promote marriage equality--while not spending. For more fantastic examples of how "Buy Nothing Day"(s) work, and the clever and successful strategies used by activists, please visit www.adbusters.org and check out their links to more information. Constant activism is necessary for any movement to stay present in the public's mind. Good luck promoting equality!

Seems like not even JointheImpact supports "Day Without a Gay"
"So I'm to assume that the Join the Impact site doesn't support the "Day Without a Gay" effort either. Otherwise, in what world does it make sense that you would tell everyone else to turn off the internet, don't support any type of advertising, and then keep your site up an running WHILE keeping google adsense right there to the left. Good to know that you'll be making some profit on this day.
"Do not contribute to advertising revenue: Meaning, spend 24 hours of your life without TV & Internet"
Seems a bit hypocritical. I was fully expecting a splash page for the "Day without a gay" detailing what you were supposed to support and then go my way. But I see that you have your forums open, your ad revenue still up and coming in. Guess you couldn't even support your own ideas. " Well for one... Google stepped into the political realm on a rare occasion and donated $100,000 toward the No on Prop 8 campaign. They issued a statement explaining this and basically summarized the point that they couldn't sit back and watch the rights of the gay community be defeated when a number of their employees are part of that community. They are on our side.
If JointheImpact can make some money at this too by raising funds then more power to them ( = more power to us). You seem to be a smart internet user to recognize google adwords and how JointheImpact would be profiting. Don't forget, we live in a free market society... let's use our buying power to support businesses that support our rights. Money talks!!!
The idea behind Day without a Gay isn't to prove to the world we can be Amish, its to show people how much spending power we have. Let's use that wisely.
Look for the discussion thread about designing a logo for Gay friendly businesses.... Some good ideas in there :-)

ACTION ALERT: Day Without A Gay and France's declaration at the UN
On Dec. 10, the same time protesters are observing Day Without A Gay, France will be presenting a political declaration to the General Assembly at the United Nations that will call for the global decriminalization of same-sex behavior and gender expression. It is significant that France is doing this on the 60th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Universal Human Rights, since sexual orientation and gender identity are not included in the original declaration. France is also currently holding the presidential seat for the European Union and is presenting the declaration with the support of all EU countries.
Currently, 80 to 90 countries outlaw same-sex activity and non-conforming gender expression; the sentences for these "crimes" range from imprisonment to execution. Distressingly, a day without a gay in these countries means that queer people are judicially murdered! The political declaration is non-binding but increased support for it builds pressure to create a resolution and establishes international standards for law.
The Roman Catholic Church has already come out against this declaration on the grounds that it will lead to gay marriage. Under this specious logic, they are supporting death for queer people.
Support the global decriminalization of homosexuality, bisexuality, and gender expression. Include mention of France's declaration in your Day Without A Gay activism. Contact UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and tell him we deserve our universal human rights. Contact Obama's incoming administration and tell them you want them to support the declaration and asylum for lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender people trying to escape countries with these inhumane and draconian laws. Contact Amnesty International and tell them the criminalization of queer people is not acceptable in any country.
