G.L.O.W. (Giving Light all Over the World)
My thoughts exactly on creating city pages like for the original JTI Nov 15th event! Can we rally people to volunteer to update their pages and start posting plans? Please keep in mind this is OUR website! Power to the People!
.I created a quicklinks of the state pages to help facilitate getting the word out... http://jointheimpact.wetpaint.com/page/Quick+Links+States+%3E+Cities ..

Candlelight vigil?
Realized after I pressed "post"... there should be a vigil in the location you are going. Check the City quick links for where you're going, and you can attend there!!! Tada! Problem solved .... giggles

What will your sign say?
This would take two signs, or a banner, and my funds don't stretch that far, but I'd like to see my state's motto in rainbow letters:
"Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain"

Where have all these discussions.....
I noticed that too, there used to be so many people posting and discussing here on a daily basis but the trend went down a week later. Here is some support I wanted to share with you:
1) Maybe people can post an advertisement on a local newspaper and add a website link to www.jointheimpact.com. And also feel free to e-mail major newspaper editors or give them calls (via cellphone or land-line).
2) You can also e-mail the local organizers who contributed on Nov. 15th protests, just visit there State's pages on this site.
3) And lastly, message the people who have made "branch" organizations on Facebook, Myspace, and other official websites to come together and unify. The official No on Prop 8 campaign has a Facebook site at this link: http://www.facebook.com/pages/No-on-Prop-8-Dont-Eliminate-Marriage-for-Anyone/29097894014
4) Give everyone the time and dates for the next 'JTI' events like "Day Without a Gay", "Light up the Night", and the second national protest on January 10, 2009.
Does this help?

"The Truth About Homosexuality"
Oh, these people! I encountered one of them (assuming there is more than one) at the Folsom Street Fair, of all places. Someone ran up to me and asked to take my picture; naturally I said yes, because that's an important part of being a nun. A quick snap, and the photographer ran off rather quickly. Most people at least say "thank you." Someone else ran up at that point yelling 'Sister! He's one of /them/!" This fellow explained that this was someone from 'Americans for Truth" and I shouldn't let him use my picture for their propaganda. Short of mugging the guy for the camera, nothing to be done for it.
So a few days later, I get a note from one of my media-monitoring Sisters in San Diego sent me this link:
http://americansfortruth.com/news/nudity-is-illegal-but-nudity-was-everywhere-at-folsom-street-fair.html#more-2319
Whee! I'm Internet Famous at last! (Can you tell which one is me? I'm the one with clothes on.) Hopefully, PozinProv, you had never heard of this group because no one else has either. My thought was not whether he tells the truth (in the case of Folsom it was all true) but whether it matters. We are still in America, we are still Americans, and the Constitution protects even the naked, profane and drag nuns. No matter who may be offended.

We will NEVER WIN THE RIGHTS we DESERVE!!
We MOST CERTAINLY WILL!!
Not with an attitude like YOURS, though. I am 72 years old &, when young, never could I have envisioned the incredible progress we have made & CONTINUE to make EACH & EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!!
No change in the last 5 years? Tell me in WHICH STATE(s) YOU could marry someone of your own choosing of the same sex 5 years ago? HOW MANY Colleges, Universities & other schools had GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCES 5 years ago? Would you prefer a President from 5 years ago (eg George Bush?) or would you prefer Barack Obama (& don't think the "LAZY" younger generation didn't have something to do with that!) I could probably go on ad infinitum with the incredible progess we make each & every day NOT ONLY because of people like me from the generations you speak of BUT FROM THE CURRENT GENERATION AS WELL!
Do you really think that Lt. CHOI and Lt. Col FEHRENBACH (and others) pouring their heart, soul & their own well-being into the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" DON'T HAVE PASSION???
Personally, I think you owe an apology to the current generation & to the incredible work being done by individuals & organizations BY PEOPLE WITH PASSION in small cities and towns, statewide & NATIONWIDE doing an INCREDIBLE job to ensure the freedom & equality of the GLBT community.
Just because it is not being done YOUR way doesn't mean that it isn't being done. It is my dream that I will SEE FULL EQUALITY before I die & at 72, that doesn't leave much time.
So stop YOUR BITCHING and show YOUR PASSION and do what YOU CAN to make a difference and perhaps even help MOTIVATE others, INSTEAD of being critical of them. Your comments here did little, that is constructive, so far as I'm cocerned. (Unless, perhaps you REALLY intended to PRAISE Caeser rather than to bury him).
See YOU in DC October 11th ?????

Post your ideas for what we should do next to keep up the momentum!q
"I would find the whole newsletter thing annoying. Just on a personal level- I like to choose what I receive and I get so much already that I would not want more. It would also seem very "commercialized" to me and I like the current grassroots tone of the site. If it becomes more like the already existing national organization that just "inform" people about what to do versus a great resource for centralized grassroot action planning, I am likely to become MUCH less enchanted with it and I worry that it will be a passing fad.
However, if a newsletter or subscriptions or whatever IS added, I would like to suggest a mechanism for forwarding the contact information to state organizers because that's an opportunity to get directly involved in their own community not just in the national actions that are less frequent. For example, we have a LOT going on in Arizona right now- we turned out 4000-5000 people at our rally and just had a community planning meeting with about 150 people in attendance on a Monday evening, all ready to take action. That's a lot for a "red state"!" You wouldn't receive a newsletter unless you requested it and then confirmed your request via a link in an email ("double opt-in").
The idea would be to keep members informed on initiatives like a march on Washington, updating State pages with new information, asking for input, etc. It would not tell people what to do.
Forwarding contact information is tricky because you have to be very careful that the individual understands exactly what will be forwarded, to whom, for what time period is the consent to forward in effect, and how can the recipient use the information, etc. But, I love your idea and wonder if maybe the State pages here could serve as a hub for connecting people to local, "live and in person" efforts.
That is awesome what you guys are doing in Arizona! Wow.

Tax Day Rallies at Post Offices Nationwide
" " Long story here: One day at work a manager was announcing that the company was cracking down on (and this it true of all companies) those who have people on their health care plan and are not truly dependent on them. In most cases it's inadvertent. You call to say the kid has gone off to college, take him off and they don't do it so kid's still on there.
Then he said "like domestic partners. Someone could register as DP, they break up and are still listed"
I hit the roof, the dude thought DP bennies are free. I asked him "are you married? got kids?" (I know he is and does). "Do you pay anything for their health care?" No he does not.
Then I pointed out a coworker who carries her DP and their son on her plan because her DP's job has no health care insurance and had to explain to him it's not free. It's taxed every single week as income 8-(
Here in sunny California that is deductible off ones state taxes. But that's only for some people. If you take the standard deduction even here you might not get that benefit like if you don't own a house. On the federal she gets zero, zip, nada, zilch benefit.
This was a manager, did not know this.
It's true, we have to educate the convincible persuadable voter.

LGBT Friednly Religious Communities
Just a quick note that Unitarian Universalist churches will also perform gay weddings even where they aren't legal. The minister (Rev. Greg Stewart) mentioned in the podcasts from www.uusf.org is the one who married my wife and I. Of course, it was legal then... but ministers in other states will do it, too.
Building bridges to those religious groups who oppose our marriage rights is greatly facilitated by working through a group who supports them. Our UU church participates in many interfaith events, which can be an excellent opportunity to reach out to a church that may not "know" any gays.

HRC Responds to the Untruthful "Mob" Ad in the New York Times
Thank you Dave_Machine and the HRC for the information and links.
A competitive campaign of shame and blame is unfortunate, however, necessary at this time, if we’re going to continue developing a national debate about equal civil rights for all Americans. Our immediate reply should be smart, quick and set the stage for a more sophisticated on-going, high profile, national debate.
Our adversaries have initiated this debate today with a commitment to publicly shame anyone who resorts to anti-religious bigotry. Put my name on the list for saying the LDS Church teaches bigotry. www.mormonsstoleourrights.com
We can do better.
The HRC and a coalition of high and low profile organizations should respond immediately with a two page color spread ad in the New York Times, as well as other local and national papers throughout the country and Europe responding to this “Mob” argument.
Elevate this argument of bigotry and hate to focus on education, family and information. Use real people. Real Americans. This is a great opportunity to propel a formal on-going debate about the fundamental issue of equal civil rights for all Americans in all 50 states.
“Few people are willing to put aside their narrow goals for the wider good.”
Join the impact with the HRC!

How can glbt groups and individuals find more straight allies?
"We're already here but we're drifting away because the cause for gay equal rights seems to move so few gays to action." YES!!! Thank you for saying this. People, wake up. I have seen other allies mention this and some of us LGBT's jump all over them saying wtf do they know? Good lord people. I hear LGBT's (BTW, I am lesbian so I have the right to tell it like it is and defend our allies) who say already it's too hard, "they will never change" I don't know what do do, that's a great idea but it will never work and will spend an hour telling you why it won't. Today we are remembering Martin Luther King and the struggle for civil rights that is not over, is not complete because not all people in the United States are fully recognized as equal citizens. Don't we realize that the Blacks fought for over 100 years for what rights they now share? That women have fought nearly as long? When the big Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and 60's started, the activists and allies were beaten, hosed, screamed at, arrested and even murdered. Those activists did not fold up their tents and go home saying, this is too hard, this is too tough, and when ideas were presented they did not spend an hour telling each other how it wouldn't work, they spent that hour figuring out how to make it work! They had peaceful demonstrations that lasted for weeks and months, and each demonstration only brought more people to the cause. When one demonstration ended they began a new one. No one said, are we having too many demonstrations. And not every action was taken by every one, they had several going on at once or had some of the people involved in one thing and others involved in others, but the message was always the same EQUAL RIGHTS NOW!!! Until the late 60's most of the protests were non-violent on the part of the activists, this brought even more allies to their side, to the point that the President and the Legislature passed the Act. And once the Act was passed they still kept moving for voting rights!
