  • Get Those Postcards Out! There's only three days left to mail out your postcards - monday, tuesday, and wednesday. So we've gotta move people.

Currently, there are only 38 photos of people with their postcards in the album. Granted, not everyone has a digital camera but I know there's more than 38 of us. I'll be posting our picture tomorrow and I hope to see a lot more.

This is the simplest of projects. I haven't purchased a postcard since I was 10 so I wasn't sure where to find some. My suggestion: check at your local hallmark or other card stores for local postcards. It cost me a mere $1.25 for 3. So I picked up a whole bunch and I plan on taking some with me to work to have my co-workers participate. Hopefully they'll let me take their pictures too!

I hope more people get on the ball with this one because it really could have a big impact. Lets make sure President-elect Obama knows that we're still here!

  • Project Postcard - Let President-elect Obama know how we feel Send a postcard to Obama. Send him as many as you can and ask your friends and family to do the same. Let him know that we've heard his promises and expect his support. We aren't willing to wait until the economy problems and the war are resolved. We want equal rights now! Imagine the impact THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of postcards flooding into the transition office in Chicago would have. Do your part. Check out www.CivilRightsFront.com for more info.

  • Ongoing Project? I had a friend mention that a local college still had leftover postcards because many of the students were off on break. is this a continuing project? Should we change the wording/mailing address? It seems a shame to only have a narrow window to do this.

  • DOMA The anti-gay groups are already at it!!!! How can we get the word out as to the size Project Postcard is making? Is there a way to track numbers at this point of postcards being sent in? Is this public record - meaning, can we callthe Presidential Transition Team to find out?

  • Disillusioned (Pt. 2) I am also disillusioned about some things, although that's not saying much. My morale was low from the beginning, so really I just want to do something useful. For now I will be patient.

I think your first post is accurate in terms of analysis but I think your expectations are too high.

I will tell you what I have seen in terms of action:

A large nationwide rally in November

A more moderate sized event in December which still made national

In between, Join the Impact has had some pretty good filler. Responding to hate crimes and a political event that outraged us by encouraging mail in petitions, the project postcard, and a grassroots effort to support hate crime victims. Now this is something new--an improvement from before. And it needs a lot more improvement if we are to be an effective national organization. Also is that what we *really* want to do?

We've had our share of things we tried to do that were a disappointment.

Question: are we succeeding at being national? Just based on this discussion board I've seen lots of cities where the activity seems sparse for specific events. That doesn't tell me how many cities, large and small, have something going.

So what are our expectations and demands of Join the Impact? How do we measure whether it is living up to its goals and our expectations?

To me the thing that seems off is that there isn't much in the way of reinforcing individual actions to promote equality. There almost was with the boycott with all this talk going around, but that was about it.

  • ACTION ALERT!!! Ardent Supporter of Prop. 8 Invited to do Invocation
"Unfortunately, you do not understand the religious-conservative agenda. They would wish for us to either stay in the closet, be kept from being treated like equal citizens, OR worse yet, try to change us through their "religious ex-gay ministries". I know the religious-conservative side, because I was one of them for a long time. You are mistaken if you believe that this is OK. Reaching out to the other side is one thing, having one of the most acclaimed pastors from the religious right do his invocation is a slap in the face. There are HUNDREDS of Pastors out there who are well known and support LGBT Equality! He could pick any one of them!

Sorry, but your activism is similar to what I saw in MILK. We don't stand up for what is right, we THINK that the democrats will take care of us if we elect them in, not so! We must stand up and hold our officials accountable!"
I could not care less about the religious-conservative agenda. This is not about the religious-conservative agenda. This is about Obama's selection of one man, Pastor Rick Warren, to do the inaugural invocation. I will admit to only a 30-second glance at Warren's record since hearing about this today. I have never heard of him being "one of the most acclaimed pastors of the religious right". Although frankly those words are a load of fluff without any substance behind them. So tell me more about him. Who is Rick Warren? What does Rick Warren stand for and how do you know this? What is Rick Warren's record, what has Rick Warren done? You didn't say that Rick Warren "would wish for us to either stay in the closet, be kept from being treated like equal citizens, OR worse yet, try to change us through their 'religious ex-gay ministries'" Don't think you can just say someone's a member of the "religious right" and think you've already discredited them. Show me proof that Rick Warren is not merely a misguided man, but an actively hateful man.

By the way, I neglected to say there's no need to lie down. But target what Obama is going to do. Perhaps another Project Postcard is in order, urging him again to take action toward repealing the Defense of Marriage Act.

  • What about the economy? Oh, please! With panicked consumer spending at absolute rock bottom, Americans all over the country have already declared a defacto economic boycott on the Holiday Spending Season which will negatively effect the financial picture far worse than this one-day gay boycott that I'd be surprised to get any press or have any noticeable effect.

Frankly, I think we need to wisely and without targeting that misses the mark, encourage PERMANENT boycotting of businesses that contribute to anti-gay causes ... and have many one-day all-out boycotts to spread the message that gays can contribute a lot to a struggling economy OR can refuse to.

More importantly, I think it's vital to either participate or stay out of the way of ANY of the visibility projects that come down the pike, especially (imo) in the lead-up to the California Supreme Court decision on overturning Proposition 8. (Sorry for my Califocentric position, but to me it's all about Prop 8 right now) :)

Anyway, unless lynching is contemplated ... can we please just live and let live about visibility actions? The rightwing is going to object to ANYTHING we do, so there's no point trying to appease them with every step. I agree we shouldn't court bad press with violent rebellion ... but we can't forestall actions just because SOMEONE might be offended.

  • Marketing ourselves for civil rights I feel the same way as SableKitty and Knottrek. I don't think I'm the leader that will emerge. A 53 year old straight woman? I can barely get through my own life with an autistic son and a husband with kidney disease. But I do care - greatly. I've written all my representatives, I got 40 people (mostly straight) to send postcards to Obama, I sign every petition that comes along. I wrote to the Vatican, the Church of LDS directly when my email bounced, and Focus on the Family. I wear a white knot and an HRC wrist band and I chit chat about my social life with my gay friends. I've written to every gay celebrity (that has a contact us on their website, many don't) asking them to encourage Hollywood to put on a bash for gay awareness. I've written to many churches asking them to tell their congregations about Prayers for Bobby. I give monthly to HRC and Fair Wisconsin. I've written HBO, ABC, CBS and NBC asking them go create shows with real life typical gay characters and families. I'm not convinced that constant rallies are effective. It seems like BIG rallies that are more occasional get more notice.
I've decided my ten conversations this year will be with ministers of churches that accept people of same sexual orientation. I plan to ask them what they can do to speak up and help. This is one type of movement that a grassroots organization like JTI could take on.

Maybe we need a brainstorming thread about what we could do that would really be effective.
Last, at least I keep thinking the JTI moderaters will take these suggestions and give them shape. Post them as events or things to do. But it doesn't seem to happen much. I feel like we are just talking to ourselves. And while I like all of you, I'd like to see be more creative about the types of events..

  • DOMA Rally Can't really speak to HRC or the others. I do think the movement is still very grass roots and uncoordinated. That's fine with me for now. I think slowly things will coalesce around the actions they need to coalesce around, like getting prop 8 back on the ballot, if need be. In the meantime, I see a lot of activity being organized independently and it's just great, as far as I'm concerned.

I was just at the Pasadena rally, which drew one hundred or so. More than half were straight allies. I thought that was awesome, and the overall showing wasn't bad given that so much is going on today. Organizers did a great job. A couple clergy were there and my wife and I spoke as one of the 18,000 California married couples. It was a good event.

We just got home and are going to walk over to the big West Hollywood event now. Looking forward to that. I don't think we should fixate on the numbers so much, just keep doing in venues large and small. People are accomplishing some amazing things. Saw a great fifties style propaganda video on the web yesterday. Saw a really good rap music video out of San Diego last week. A famous photographer is working on a project involving married LGBT couples. The Courage Campaign's "Don't Divorce Us" Slide Show was fantastic. We just have to keep doing and contributing in ways that suit our talents. Not everyone is into rallying all the time, and are doing other things. More power to them. Stay positive, and encourage the people who do show up and who are helping in other ways.

    Peace,
    Gail
