Why the Fist

Many of us have been talking about the "fist" as the image you chose. We feel it stands for violence, .intolerance...can we find something better? How about a vote on new images and see what everyone else wants as an image. Just a thought, keep up the good work of spreading the news to everyone. 7  out of 14 found this valuable. Do you?

Why the fist?... it's perfect... you should have an intolerance for the ignorance of Prop H8... It's also perfectly OK to be angry over this issue as well! You can be both without being violent. I'm angry as hell and I hope they know this... 1  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

When I see a fist I think it looks hard and quite aggressive. But color it rainbow and it's perfect! 2  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

Holding a fist into the air has historically meant "Fight the Power". It's not about violence and intolerance. It's about resisting what's imposed from above. 6  out of 7 found this valuable. Do you?

The upraised fist can symbolize different things in different societal contexts. For many years, the upraised fist in this country, came to symbolize the black power movement. But it has had a variety of other meanings in different cultures and religions. (For example, in Wicca, the upraised fist may be used as an invocation of the South and/or the element of fire.) In today's society, I believe that most people view the upraised fist as a symbol of an unwillingness to compromise your principles, a strength of will against the forces that would subdue you. The rainbow fist is therefore (my opinion) probably the best and most powerful symbol for a new millenium of trying to obtain equal rights under the law! As a symbol...it says, "We SHALL overcome! We SHALL NOT fail! We SHALL succeed!" 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

Who is this symbol for? Are we trying to convince the gay community that we need equal rights, or the rest of the world? 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I like all of Jason Hears' logos. But the upraised rainbow fist, by itself, is the most powerful statement to me. It says strength in the face of adversity. However, when it is paired with the words, "Fight the hate" it feels like there is implied violence behind it. The other symbols...well...they are a little too "happy" for my taste!

I recall the fist as being a symbol of strength in the 60's a& 70's. Remember when Black activists used it. Now the issues are the same, but mulit colored. I think a dead on fisting coming at you is violent, but this type of image where the fist is reason to me represent a sign of our fists are clenced with strength and we are letting you know that. I like it. But! Sisters and Brothers of our community let's get this flag thing correct! When you display or image our colors the Red is always at the top or on the the left. I now this from Gilbert the creator of our flag. Best regard, Lare, San Francisco 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

To me, it's like a guy watching football goo "Woo!" and making making those fists.

I always saw the rainbow fist as a symbol of pride and persistence. That's just me, though.

I just rememberd something else. If you look at the top of the frst you will see a pink triangle. As you may know, the triangle was used by the Nazis to identify then murder Lesbians and Gays. There was a big brewhaha when the Holocaust Museuem opened in D.C. and it was not going to include this information as part of the exhibit. After much outcry a moving and historical perspective was included. Although, a sad reminder...WE also must never forget that we were among the first rounded up in this display of inhumanity. We have a deep, rich and spattered with blood history that many do not speak of. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

It is the universal "raised fist" salute...found in many colors, stripes, or no colors...and it's a symbol. Meant to be an expression of solidarity and strength. It is NOT a symbol of violence. It is a gesture..some say to mean 'life and liberty being fought for'...and I cannot think of anything more appropriate than that in this scenario. ;) 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
