ACTION ALERT: Day Without A Gay and France's declaration at the UN
Dec 4 2008, 4:26 AM EST | Post edited: Dec 4 2008, 4:26 AM EST
On Dec. 10, the same time protesters are observing Day Without A Gay, France will be presenting a political declaration to the General Assembly at the United Nations that will call for the global decriminalization of same-sex behavior and gender expression. It is significant that France is doing this on the 60th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Universal Human Rights, since sexual orientation and gender identity are not included in the original declaration. France is also currently holding the presidential seat for the European Union and is presenting the declaration with the support of all EU countries.

Currently, 80 to 90 countries outlaw same-sex activity and non-conforming gender expression; the sentences for these "crimes" range from imprisonment to execution. Distressingly, a day without a gay in these countries means that queer people are judicially murdered! The political declaration is non-binding but increased support for it builds pressure to create a resolution and establishes international standards for law.

The Roman Catholic Church has already come out against this declaration on the grounds that it will lead to gay marriage. Under this specious logic, they are supporting death for queer people.

Support the global decriminalization of homosexuality, bisexuality, and gender expression. Include mention of France's declaration in your Day Without A Gay activism. Contact UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and tell him we deserve our universal human rights. Contact Obama's incoming administration and tell them you want them to support the declaration and asylum for lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender people trying to escape countries with these inhumane and draconian laws. Contact Amnesty International and tell them the criminalization of queer people is not acceptable in any country.

Hello PaigeListerud,
I was wondering where the website links were located in your message. Everyone, I have provided official website links [by number] here for the support required to add "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to the "UN Declaration of Universal Human Rights":

1) "Include mention of France's declaration in your Day Without A Gay activism"---
::I will do my simple part by editing the "Day Without a Gay" page to mention that and add a link to this page and an official site stating that. I will also give a message to "MichaelBeezner" regarding this new edit, and see if I get a reply.

2) "Contact UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and tell him we deserve our universal human rights"---
::Official United Nations profile, statements, reports, press briefings of Ban Ki-Moon: http://www.un.org/sg/

3) "Contact Obama's incoming administration and tell them you want them to support the declaration and asylum for lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender people trying to escape countries with these inhumane and draconian laws"---
::Official website for Obama-Biden's Transition Team: http://change.gov/

4) "Contact Amnesty International and tell them the criminalization of queer people is not acceptable in any country"---
::Amnesty International's web page on the Declaration of Human Rights:

Thats good to know. I hope everyone on this site joins in on this opportunity and knows about it firsthand.

Honestly, its surprising to know that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have now INCLUDED LGBT people, and hope it PASSES on December 10, 2008. Its a great opportunity for the LGBT people and there allies in this day and age. And I hope this story goes on major newspapers and in the media like the BBC channel =]

I hope the more public and national support we can raise for it, the greater chance it can be upgraded to a resolution and set a standard with which to pressure these countries on their human rights records. Do you find this valuable?

We remember in 1994 going to NYC to take part in STONEWALL 25: The International March on the United Nations
to Affirm the Human Rights of Lesbians and Gay People. ( We still have a piece of the Flag from that March...and you can see it in almost every gay event we go to) A truly International March to affirm the rights of lesbian and gay people around the globe. In 1994 it was again the French government, with the new conservative Prime Minister of France, having shown remarkable political leadership in calling for the highest level summit on AIDS. He asked the heads of state of the 14 nations that donate the most to global AIDS programs to meet in Paris in June 1994 to discuss the global AIDS pandemic and the world's response to it.
It isn't surprising that the French again take the lead ! Merci, Paige Listerud !

"The Roman Catholic Church has already come out against this declaration on the grounds that it will lead to gay marriage. Under this specious logic, they are supporting death for queer people."

Wow why am I not surprised >.> they continuously try to post claim to marriage even when marriage is not even mentioned!!!

How long are religious organizations going to excuse their homophobia with more excuses? I've seen it time and time again and now they are excusing themselves with marriage to justify genocide? Isn't it religious figures that claim to be the center of moral integrity?

"We don't hate homosexuals, why does everyone call us homophobes, if you knew Christians, you'd know we love all. Some of my best friends are gay."

Please, no one is buying it ;\

The Vatican of the Roman Catholic Church is spreading fear and prejudice, just like what the "Yes On 8" campaign did on there TV advertisements before Election Day.
This new Human Rights record says NOTHING about same-sex marriage and keeping LGBT people's lives de-criminalized under the United Nations laws will help the World be a little more accepting and tolerant.

United Nations Human Rights will be more fair and just with this new proposal. SIGN THE PETITION:

AUSCHWITZ CHRISTMAS 2008 A flashback far more severe than in --- BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

Dear Fr. Geoff Farrow,

I have been so saddened by Pope Benedict XVI's cruel words to LGBTQ people around the world, to their parents, families and friends, most ESPECIALLY TO CHILDREN. After reading the accounts of this human travesty, I did not know where to find comfort or hope. And then I thought about your blog. And just like receiving a wonderful Christmas present, sure enough I found the hope and comfort I needed to hear.

I am a priest and a clinical psychologist (MS). And for one of my research projects I chose to do a qualitative research project of the recorded verbal accounts of survivors of the Holocaust, 50 years after the event. It was a difficult research project, because I could not make sense of one of the accounts of the survivors.

For example, one survivor was describing what it was like riding the train to AUSCHWITZ, but he was describing how he was trying to make conversation with a girl on the train. I listened and wrote out this one account almost 30 times but I just was not getting it. I could not understand how this man could be talking about wanting to make conversation with this girl on the same train to AUSCHWITZ!?!

Because I had taught high school religion classes for nearly 20 years, it hit me hard, like a flash of lightning. Instantly, all the pieces came together, so fast. Though this survivor was in his late 60’s when he gave his account of his story on audiotape, he was remembering the events that took place, but naturally they were recounted through the mind of a teenager, the age he was on the train to AUSCHWITZ. That is why the dialogue wasn’t making any sense. I was thinking of him as an old man because the voice on the audiotape was the voice of a 68-year-old. As shocking ….
