Concerns about Day Without A Gay and a request for alternative actions
Dec 5 2008, 2:06 AM EST | Post edited: Dec 5 2008, 2:06 AM EST
I posted in another thread:

http://jointheimpact.wetpaint.com/thread/2120354/Announce+your+support+on+email%2C+wensites%2C+Facebook%2C+take+cyber-holiday

some of my concerns about Day Without A Gay. Briefly, I have come to the conclusion that it could very well hurt us more than help.

For those of you who have come to a similar conclusion, what alternative actions have you or might you consider taking on December 10? I still want to do something on that day to further our cause.

Here are a couple of ideas I've had to give you an sense of what I mean and to solicit your feedback on them. Aspects of these two ideas are Utah-specific but there are probably parallels in other states.

a) Instead of "Calling in Gay" ... "Sign the Petition" and encourage
your co-workers or fellow students to also sign Equality Utah's
petition of support for the Common Ground Initiative.
http://EqualityUtah.org

b) Encourage business owners to display a placard or small sign
indicating that they support "Civil Rights for All" including the
Common Ground Initiative. Instead of *not* spending money, people who
support civil rights for LGBT citizens could purchase from those
businesses.

Thank you for any suggestions or feedback you can offer me.

Here's what we decided:

Park City Gay Rights Group Changes Focus of December 10th Event

A grassroots group of gay civil rights supporters in Park City, Utah has withdrawn its call for people to "call in gay" and to not spend money on December 10. Instead, the group asks individuals to support Equality Utah's Common Ground Initiative.

PRLog (Press Release) – Dec 06, 2008 – Park City, Utah - A grassroots group of gay civil rights supporters in Park City, affiliated with JoinTheImpact.com, has withdrawn its call for people to "call in gay" and to not spend any money on December 10.

Instead, the group encourages Park City residents to raise awareness about civil rights denied to LGBT citizens by signing Equality Utah's Common Ground Initiative petition - http://EqualityUtah.org - and to encourage two co-workers to do the same. Performing service work during the day or evening of December 10 remains a part of the group's plans.

When asked why the group is withdrawing it's call to take a day off work and not participate in the economy, organizer Mark Worthen of Park City said, "We listened to the arguments of business owners and others that taking any action that could hurt the local economy is not wise during what might be the worst recession since World War II. We came to agree with that position and we thank the individuals who communicated with us in a thoughtful and respectful manner."

Worthen added, "We ask our opponents to listen to us with an open mind and to be willing to change their mind when presented with a persuasive argument. It would be hypocritical for us not to do the same."

The group is also promoting an ongoing Food Drive for Equality and a Light Up The Night candlelight vigil on Park City's Main Street on Dec 20 at 5:00 p.m.

I don't understand what anyone hopes to gain by trying to counter the effect of Day Without a Gay. If you don't agree with it, don't participate. But not agreeing with it does not mean it's not going to happen.

A lot of people in California think 2010 is too soon for a Repeal Prop 8 ballot initiative. But it's going to happen whether they agree with it or not. This is no different. You strategic opposition does NOTHING to stop it from happening. And no, it does not counter its effect.

Further, I'm reminded of Mormons whom I begged (uselessly I might add) to at least ABSTAIN from voting.

If you don't like D w/o a G, just don't play. Why must you work AGAINST someone's protest and visibility idea? It's not EVEN civil disobedience. It's a timid boycott. What are you going to do when things get more intense? Are you going to naysay and push back against everything?

Unless there's violence involved, i respectfully suggest that if you don't like someone's protest idea, you simply don't participate. Raining on each other's parades is going to be very counterproductive.

I do have to go to work. But I will refrain from making any purchases on Monday. I'll even make sure I don't put gas in my car.

I still don't know what good it will do - but I'm down with the movement and I'm a team player.

Can't we do all of these things? I myself don't know how much of an impact this boycott will have, but it is something. We need to support everyone's efforts, not divide the community so NO strong visual or economic impact is made. Do you find this valuable?

"It's a timid boycott. "
Which is one reason I oppose it.

Well...since Robert is already retired ......Russ and Robert and about 15 friends (all hetero sexuals) are changing it slightly to become.............A Day With A Gay !....yep we all have made up little Pink slips of Paper that say ..." You Have Been Pinked" and it is also being printed on 1 Dollar bills only (brand new from the bank) We are all going to start Bright and early and go to breakfast at the local eatery
( Yes there is only one eatery open for breakfast in our tiny town of 500) Then we are going to the "Bigger" outlyng towns. We have with us Rainbow flag stickers ( to ask shopkeepers if we can put them in their window...to let Gay tourists know you would like their business) If they say no we leave...if they say yes ....we buy something....we are going to do this in 7 little towns around us...we are going to have a blast because ......well first off we are rebels and never fully follow the pack.....and we get to interact a bit more with the people who 'See' us ...but don't remember us ( sometimes they do though)...and its a good excuse to stretch the limits a little and just have some fun with it . We are going to add sayings to the little Pink cards....like when we walk up to a stranger on the sidewalk...and strike up a short conversation....then when we leave we will give them the "You Have Just Been Pinked" Card....and on it will be printed.....you have just had a pleasant conversation with a same sex Married person.......How do you feel...wasn't that bad....Huh?

Still a few more days to come up with more possibilities!!

You guys really should not be concerned.....these are all 'Gesture" protests......not intended to harm...but to just do it and something else and on and on .....soon somewhere along the line ...we might hit on the Mother Lode ...that WILL make all the difference....during the Vietnam War ...the first protests involved high school students getting passing motorists to "Turn On your headlights if you are against the war".......and then look what happened......the economic downturn is a great smokescreen and a great lesson.....really.....it will become more useful as it worsens.......people become much much nicer in really bad times ...because EVERYBODY is looking for something...well you'll see...everything will eventually works its way out.....SH@T usually does that !

R&R, I applaud your Pinked idea. It's a great adaptation, and I strongly appreciate the efforts of same-sex married couples to put a friendly face to this issue. Huzzah.

Please be careful about printing dollar bill replicas on pink paper. Even if it's obviously a gimmick, it's considered counterfeiting.

Good Luck on the 10th. Your plan is teh awesome!

The "PINKED slips are separate from the Dollar Bills ...we writ around the edges ( making sure not to obscure the serial numbers..impacting the Bill slightly, without defacing it ( we are thinking of just stamping a Pink triangle wit a $ sign in the middle!

I am truly honored to call you two my friends. You are passionate and imagenitive! Pink Dollar bills is an AWSOME IDEA!

What if we took it one step further and opened a "Pink" account dedicated to education in our schools. A "donation" fund to hire glbt speakers to go into local schools and colleges?

What do you think guys?
