SHUT UP AND MOVE TO THE BACK OF THE BUS!
Dec 16 2008, 3:49 PM EST
Sorry, I will never keep silent for your organization or any other. I therefore will not participate in your demonstration. When you act like sheeple, the religious right hate mongers will have even less respect for you than they do now. This is one Viet Nam vet who never takes any disrespect from anyone for any reason.Be proud, walk tall, speak out! 27 out of 56 found this valuable. Do you?

How exactly are we disrespecting him? Maybe if he were more clear we could understand his side better. Since when should anyone have to sit on the back of the bus? How do we act like "sheeple"?

He's referring to Light Up the Night, and many people don't agree with the concept of peacefulness and silence and/or singing, as opposing to anger and chanting and/or protesting. He's not only entitled to that opinion, he's doing the right thing about it ... choosing not to participate.I'm expecting many people to show up at the L.A. LutN still angry, with protest signs, and not ready to observe the spirit of this particular action ... and it falls to me and my team to try and convince them to join the spirit of the proceedings, which are a) simply a change-up to show we are not a one-trick pony, b) to display some of the other emotions we feel post Prop 8 (i.e., sadness, hopefulness, confidence in truth and beauty winning out), c) to offer our community and the media something different from the recent spate of identical rallies and protest marches, and d) with perfect timing to counter the latest lies of victimhood claimed by our opponents in such dispicable venues as the No Mob Veto advert. It might be an uphill climb with people who still want to vent their anger, but I wish they'd follow the O.P's example and just sit this one out. 7 out of 11 found this valuable. Do you? |

A lot of people have this same issue with the Day of Silence. Basically the idea is that we shouldn't be making ourselves weak or invisible, but instead putting ourselves out there in a more powerful way. Not necessarily through anger (though I can't speak for the original poster), but in a way that shows the community as being strong.

I love that the Courage Campaign is urging everyone to see a screeing of MILK just prior to attending Light Up the Night. Anyone who feels a silent candlelight vigil is weak or invisfying should see that film pronto. It's anything but. It's incredibly powerful and awe-inspiring. Don't knock it till you've tried it. Saturday night is your chance!! 3 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |

There are different types of protests. For example, I thought "Day without a Gay" was stupid. But I whole-heartedly agree with the Food Drive for Equality. This is a silent protest. If he wants to get loud, I imagine the protest on January 15th will be loud enough for him.

Civil Rights are historically won through violence and threatening the ruling class.. The oppressor does not concede unless threatened. Look at the 60s. Look at the Civil War. What if Abraham Lincoln had decided to end slavery via "consensus"? Milk ends with a pansy candlelight march. That is a lie.

Look at Stonewall. Those queens busted windows, burned police cars and fought back. You're all going to light a candle and look for a date.

This is one Viet Nam vet who never takes any disrespect from anyone for any reason. That's fine, but I think we gotta have at least one moment to come together as a community in general contemplative meditation and peacefulness and all that stuff--or heck, just call it prayer. If you don't like that, next year just ask really passionately for the LUTN event to be a singing protest instead of a silent protest. 1 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

Stonewall was a different era. We live in a very different culture now.We need to trust the peaceful young gay activists now. We don't need violence that will cause the moderates to move away from us. We are beginning to win over the moderates. If we can win everyone but the religious fringe then we will be ok. Violence now will hurt our movement and set us back decades. Plus violence is simply wrong. 6 out of 10 found this valuable. Do you? |

We are at the point now where we must win over people's hearts and minds. We can't do that through force or violence. Besides the right wing media and policitions would use it to demonize us and justify persecuting us and taking more of our rights away. If you don't want to be silent thats fine, shout chants and march but please don't be violent. 3 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

Joshua, I don't know how old you are but, I for one can't wait another forty years for the same rights that everyone else has enjoyed since 1776. Stonewall was forty years ago and here we are still "talking" about fighting for something that was guaranteed to us by the constitution. I'm a fighter not a lover! I don't have time "for love to find a way." That is why I have joined fightoutloud.org 5 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

The street activists of the 80's gave us many of the rights we enjoy now. Have fun, but be careful. Don't get arrested - you're not doing the cause any good by sitting in jail. Stay out of physical fights. They aren't worth the trouble they'll cause. Don't do vandalism. Just think about how pissed off you are when someone eggs your car. Why do that to anyone else? But there's room in our movement for another fire-pisser. Just figure out how to do your thing in a way that doesn't make us all look like a bunch of oafs. 8 out of 10 found this valuable. Do you? |

Yes, LUTN is meant to be a peaceful event where people stand silent until asked questions. There are informational fliers that can be handed out during the LUTN event, just visit the JTI LUTN webpage. Hopefully, major news media outlets will be there during the LUTN events.

"Don't leave news showing up to "Hopefully". Contact them! Do it now, the people that set weekend assignments usually work during the week. Call them, email them, get to them and ask them to assign a reporter and camera to the event in your city! 4 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |
