Making a personal impact challenge - I did it so can you!

This week I saw an ad for Ancestry.com so i decided to check out their website.
As I did the free sample I noticed that you must select male/female when you register and then based on your gender input you get to add a wife/husband of the opposite sex. I was upset by this and being inspire to cause an impact I sent this letter:

Hello,

I was starting to use your site but noticed a few things that are alienating and discriminating towards people who are not Straight. First of all if you identify as male or female, only people of the opposite sex are offered as husband or wife. Marriage Equality is law in Massachusetts and Connecticut and therefore your tree is not accurate. In addition some people may have spouses without being married.

In addition, there are people who don’t identify as male or female. Why not add an “other” category?

Thank you

Today,
I checked my email and was really happy and encouraged to get this email:
-We appreciate your message.
Due to a technical limitation with Ancestry.com online family trees, users currently cannot easily include same gender partners and spouses in their family tree. Our desktop software program(s), Family Tree Maker 2008/2009, do include this functionality. We are working aggressively on this issue on Ancestry and anticipate resolving it by the end of the first quarter of 2009. As the leader in online family history, we are constantly seeking to evolve and improve our service with a goal of allowing all to tell their unique family story.
If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

I think this is a GREAT response especially their goal of “allowing all to tell their unique family story”

Part 2 (did not have enough room in first message)

So this brings me to my challenge to everyone on this site – go out and seek websites, organizations, companies and see if they are giving the GLBTQ population equal presentation and representation. Email them! Get answers post the information up for all to see and know. We can make impacts as a group and we can also make an impact as individuals. Go Make an Impact!

Good idea.... personal impact. I've seen people posting things they're doing, but this idea of yours sparks an idea of mine.

What do you think of a page for people to put their "Personal Impact" accomplishments? Under Events > Things you can do today?

Would you like to do it? It could be your second impact of the week! (I can do it for you if you are time/wiki challenged)

Their response was even more overwhelming. I had an interview with Ancestry.com's CEO Rick Sullivan. He was very aware of the necessity to alter their online tree - the change will take place by the end of the first quarter 2009:

You can read more at http://jaysays.com/2008/12/ancestrycom-evolves-with-the-definition-of-family/

I've also added a link to report these sites under "Report Discrimination" to the blog - so if you find things like that but can't seem to find your voice, I'll get someone to answer for the hate.

cheers and good work!

A year ago I started to see TV advertisements about the relationship dating site "eHarmony". The TV ads still appear occasionally. You can visit the site: http://www.eharmony.com/

You will notice that on the drop-down menu there is no "same-sex seeking" options. There was a news report about this and I think somebody has already tried challenging the creator of the site Dr. Neil Clark Warren. Read about his board of directors here:

I just wanted to add this to the thread to see what you guys think.
