FREE Buttons!
Jan 15 2009, 8:53 AM EST
The federal government confers 1,138 benefits and protections on marriage. Benefits and protections that gay couples do not get, even those married in Massachusetts and Connecticut. I have been making simple buttons with a white background and black lettering that only say, "1,138" and I've been giving them out for free, though I may start asking for a suggested donation. I ordered a 1,000 buttons for about $60 dollars. The button maker is a couple hundred dollars, but if a few people in one area chip in to pay for one, it's doable. I give these buttons along with examples of some of these 1,138 benefits. The button is meant to be a conversation starter. I've had several people (gay and straight) ask what the number refers to. Very few had any idea these benefits exist. If you want a button, send me your address. If you want to help make this a larger operation, let me know that as well.

Hi-this is a FABULOUS! idea. I would like a button, if possible. I'd like to see what it looks like, so I can possibly suggest for the groups that I belong to that we should make some as well. (San Jose PFLAG chapter; Marriage Equality Silicon Valley) -thanks, Karen J kmragain@yahoo.com (don't want to give out personal address-please email me) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I think it's a great idea.. I love pins and buttons, and people regularly start conversations with me based on all the buttons on my purse that advocate for various things.

Hey everyone! For those of you who asked for buttons, I'll be sending them shortly. Also, if it's possible to send a donation, it would be helpful. I've been getting responses from a lot of different people and I'm realizing this can get pretty expensive pretty quickly. You can send whatever amount your comfortable with, my return address will be on the envelope. Thanks! 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Kristen-I'll be sure to send you something when I get mine. Not only do you have the button expense, but the postage as well. It's great that you are doing this, and I hope that everyone who gets one sends you a little something to cover the cost. YOU GO GIRL!!! :-) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

perhaps the 1,138 button idea could be combined with the tax day idea - we could pass out buttons at local post offices on 4/15 to generate visibility about inequality. This would reach people who would not necessarily attend a rally or protest.3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Wonderful conversation starter idea! Maybe we should add this to our online stores and such as well. Also, if anyone wants to make a few, but not invest in the button maker and such to mass produce them, you can get little snap together button backs and covers at places like Michaels.

It's a very good idea. Maybe JTI in each city should do more buttons and giveaway for free with donation at gay pride or other event. I want one too. Please email me at Lanpuen@yahoo.com to let me know how I can donate to make it happen. Do you find this valuable? |

Several have asked to send the template, but it's really simple: white background, black numbers, in IMPACT font at size 72. Also, make sure it says 1,138 with the comma because I think without it the number looks like a local union or something. Also, if you asked me to send a button, please let me know if you can send a donation. The response has been pretty heavy, and I am a school teacher putting my own money into it. Thank YOU!

Definitely I will send the donation. Can JTI consolidate this creative idea to make it more cost effective. I mean for example let's KristenPM be the center of making this and reduce the cost and JTI in each city get any kind of merchandise for sales or for donations. It will be a very very cost effective way and the visibility will vast. I am talking about large IMPACT. Hopefully we can all come together to make it happen and keep the momentum going. Thanks JTI to make us come together. "I have a dream... TOO" 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I would love a button, if you are still giving them out. I'm part of a college LGBTIQA group and they love buttons. People are always asking questions about them and those sound like great conversation starters. I would love to take your campaign idea onto my campus.
