We should make a collaborative flyer titled "The Truth About Gays", (or something like that).

On it, we could have bulleted facts that could change people's misconceptions. For example, Obama opposed Prop. 8, homosexuality is not contagious, being gay is not a choice, etc. It would be good to have some solid statistics in there too, especially regarding hate crimes. Humor should be included too, not all gays like The Village People.

These flyers would be mass distributed all across the country. They could be handed out and taped up all over, in every city. It's easy, and simple. One of the biggest reasons we are in this predicament is the lack of education. Let's get people educated. We can't force anyone to read a little flyer but we can put it out there, everywhere.

I'm definitely planning on doing this, but I need some help. Could I pleeease get some feedback on what exactly should be on these flyers? What do you want people to know about gays? Do you find this valuable?

Some brainstorming I was doing for the Tax Day thread, but the format could apply to a lot of other themes besides taxes. There could be versions about employment discrimination, hospital rights, rights denied to the one when the other dies, etc.

First, I'm imagining something that's accordionlike, so it has many panels. The title panel would be:

Title - for the tax one it'd be something like "What is this gay tax all about?"

A tasteful picture of an attractive LGBT couple (and by "tasteful" I mean "inoffensive" - we want people to actually open and read these things. Probably it'll have to be a lesbian couple.)

Then, each panel:

identify a couple by first name, city, state
3-4 questions relating to the theme. For the tax one:
a) How long have you been together?
b) How much more do you pay in taxes than you would if you were legally married?
c) What is your story? (answers would be the essaylike things people have been posting)

Last panel:

"These are just some of the 1138 rights that LGBT couples don't have:"

List of the rights related to the theme

"For more info, please visit [list of websites]"

Hi KatieLied. I think that is a great idea. The only thing I would say is that if this is about marriage or regarding it toward people who voted "yes" on 8 in order to get them to consider changing their minds, I would say go watch the videos of the Equality Summit meeting here: http://eqsummit.blogspot.com/2009/01/summit-video-part-1-now-available.html There is a lot of data shown on why people voted "yes" on 8. The biggest factor being theology. If one of the purposes of this flier is to change people's minds regarding prop 8, theology has to be addressed one way or the other. An example might be to list the over 850 churches who supported the LGBTQ community in our fight against prop 8 and/or to cite specific religious leaders who were on our side as well. Another important factor in changing people's minds on prop 8 regards talking to people you know. Face to face conversations are the most powerful, but fliers are a great way to get the message out to a lot of people whether you know them or not. If anyone here hasn't already, I highly recommend watching those videos posted on that site I listed. There is plenty of insight to be found there. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I subscribe to this blog:

Which deals with a lot of misconceptions about LGBT people. Sometimes sarcastically, sometimes with humor and sometimes with fact. Maybe you can find information there that would be helpful.

A good idea of what to do for these flyers is to go to a anti-gay Evango-Christian website, and refute their misconceptions about gays, gay sex, homosexuality, gays and law, gays and children, gays and religion, etc.

I've been doing this a LOT in the past few months, with mostly frustrating results, but I keep on...

It's a real challenge to be civil when people are judging and flaming you.

I am a Christian, so I am able to use their own weapons and words against them.

For more on my efforts and what I've learned, see my 3 part blog from last weekend.

I read this funny icon once it said something about
the gay agenda:
1.buy milk
2.spend time with friends and famiy
3.cook roast
Maybe you could have a picture like that to show that the "gay agenda" isn't something bad to be afraid of? Also, how are you going to get these out? I would love to be a part of this.
