"She finally goes to a PFLAG meeting and realizes that she was wrong. She realized that Bobby didn't become gay that he was gay at conception. She realized that Bobby was different. Mary Griffith, Bobby's mother, is an active supporter of gay and lesbian rights.

This is my call by joining PFLAG. I want to open doors of acceptance. I want to be there for youths and others coming out who feel alone and that no one will accept them. I want them to feel love, be hugged, and shown that they are okay. I want to support them with kind words. No one should commit suicide because they are gay. They are not wrong in how they feel."
My mom is worse than how Segourney Weaver portrayed the character. As in Mary's speech, parental abuse kills.

Bobby shouldn't have died at all! Every day the rest of her life, she is well aware all the good work she did later for others just won't make up for Bobby's tragically short painful life and death.

That movie was so sad and touching. being in an unaccepting family is hard these days. no one can change how we are. it's not a choice. i heard the real Mary Griffith has a 15 year old grandson who just came out and was accepted fully by the family. Do you find this valuable?

Yes I have heard that. It is said that it took the death of her son to make a change in her. I am sure many people do not like her for what she did. No one should have to die to force a change in anyone. My only hope that the world changes and accepts everyone. I know that probably won't happen but I am trying to help it change.
Thanks for your reply.

as a gay son, in a strange way, i do like mary's character in the movie. she is a flawed, honest, imperfect, real human, who unknowingly and mistakenly acted a prolonged horrible violence on own child's psych, and made a lot of honorable, brave changes in the society we live in.

i feel tragic for her, every moment of her conscious moment, she is living with her irony she got for herself that nothing does to the damage done retroactively to bobby, and he was a human who just needed a help.

Obviously, the book goes into a lot of detail that the movie did not and many aspects of the book were shown differently in the movie. I highly recommend reading the book. Unfortunately, it reads a bit like a news article as the author was a journalist/editor before the book was written, but it really fills in a lot of the gaps from the movie and gave me a much fuller understanding of Mary's struggle. At no point did I feel she was a villain in either the book or the movie - she just didn't know better, like many people. Do you find this valuable?
