Pepperdine University shows its true colors
Mar 24 2009, 9:04 PM EDT | Post edited: Mar 24 2009, 9:04 PM EDT
Jerry Derloshon, Pepperdine University director of public relations and news, conducted an interview with the Malibu Times last week. In it he states that Starr's campaign for Prop 8 is advantageous to the school.

"I would characterize it [Starr's involvement] as a plus," he said in a telephone interview last week.

"There are far more alumni who haven't said one word about any of this than there are about alumni who have," Derloshon said, estimating the total number of Pepperdine graduates at 80,000.

"While there are alumni who are very troubled by the fact that he is representing in this case, I would know that there are people who feel that Dean Starr's [position] is consistent with their values," Derloshon continued.

Yep, that's Pepperdine and and always has been - at least since I've known about it - which would be the late 60's. Pepperdine has a single agenda - and it doesn't include any of who they consider to be the lesser folk (less money, persons of color or lgbt).

Malibu is more people friendly - except for the most exclusive beach colonies.

Pepperdine is like the former administration - keep things as white and as rich as possible. The rest can take care of things for the white and rich. (By the way - they prefer the very old most traditional money.)

Pepperdine University is in california. It is considered southern california but its in the western/northern portion of los angeles county. Also near the coast. It's snobby school - but if that is put aside - it is a good school.

yeah -- definitely one of the bad spots -- and, surprisingly, in Malibu -- which is pretty liberal!

You can pass me the Vomit bucket also Jane. I've heard many stories over the years including a few personal ones that are pretty sickening.
Pepperdine has a long history of being anti gay. not uncommon for them to put gay owned businesses on a " Do not recommend list"
Something I know for an absolute fact!

Trust Me I have tried but nothing in writing. They are very careful, just as some of the churches in my area have been very careful. But several of us are on that list and it comes from very reliable sources. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

When I was graduating high school in the los angeles area in 1970, classmates were applying to a variety of schools/colleges in so cal (and other areas/states). I would hear them talking about the schools and what they found out about them. Believe me there was never a positive word about pepperdine. I don't think anybody from my class went there, if they did they were very very quiet about it (trying to hide something???). 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I was just thinking we could add them to our backwards boycott. I love that idea. My family is going shopping next month and we've agreed not to spend money at any homophobic shops 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

No one should be surprised by this. This is a Church of Christ school. The Church of Christ is one of the most conservative Christian groups in the United States. I worked with them for twenty years, trying to get them to liberalize their ideas on tons of issues.

It was with within the last twenty that they actually began to let divorced men participate in their worship services and there are some that still won't let that happen. Women are still barred from participating in religious services in most of the congregations. Homosexuals are all going to hell and there is no saving them unless they successfully complete reperative therapy. Many of them still believe that only Church of Christ member will be found in heaven - no Jews, no Muslims, no Methodists, no Episcopalians, no Charismatics, and for sure no Roman Catholics.

I was a member of the clergy in this group and finally left the pulpit to come out as a gay man. It saddens me to believe that we live in a nation where this kind of bigotry still goes on. It was this kind of bigotry that was preached from the pulpit 50 years ago to keep African Americans out of certain parts of town, or worse even out of certain town.

Note: Don't get this mixed up with the United Church of Christ which is one of the most liberal Christian groups in America.

Later,

Marlin
