I just was referred to this posting on the Dallas Voice website. This is a move forward. Now Obama come on and support us with more than words. Pass ENDA, Pass the Matthew Shephard Hate Crimes Bill, Destroy DOMA, Destroy DADT. The time is now! The day is right!http://www.dallasvoice.com/instant-tea/2009/06/01/presidential-pride-month-proclamation/ Later, Marlin 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

I don't even care enough to call Obama a hypocrite.I question the wisdom of adding another meaningless month of segregated history just when we're beginning to become mainstream. Does anyone here really pay attention to the months for blacks, women, and hispanics? I believe this is a step backward. 0 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I don't even care enough to call Obama a hypocrite.Yes people do. As a social studies school teacher we were required by curriculum directors to make sure that during black and women's months to teach about the contributions of these two groups to society. Since this is in June I am not sure how that will occur, and I have not seen a lot of curriculum developed at this point. But it is a beginning. Just the ability to openly forward this proclamation to all my fellow teachers was a move forward. I heard one positive statement from one teacher. The others have been quiet. It also gave me the courage to send a letter to my principal and assistant principal in suggestions for next year's staff development that we actually have diversity training. The homophobia, as well as religious bigotry, and racism at my school has been shocking more than one time. While I agree this doesn't overturn DADT and DOMA and Doesn't get us ENDA or Hate Crimes legislation, it does open the door for discussion and give us some legitimacy. I live in a state that I can still be fired for being gay. I have been warned by my AP twice now to keep in in the closet and I told here NO! I was standing up for myself as well as the students in my school who were gay. The fear must stop! Presidential recognition is a beginning -- not enough -- but a beginning. To me I think that its an honor to our community that Obama took the time to type out this proclamation for pride month. He is the very first president to do something like this for our community. In fact I think it's so wonderful that I made a copy of this proclamation on fancy paper and framed it. It doesn't grant us our rights but it shows that Obama has us in his plan and that gives us hope.

Texasman, I hope schools begin to teach about gay figures in history and begin to educate our youth and open their minds. OutNProud6184, I agree and think this is a step in the right direction. Be grateful for small blessings! Wanting more rights does not mean we can't rejoice in this small victory. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

Our culture has spent decades screaming on the street for the world to acknowlege our existance at ALL. We have continued to not only exist, but have a president comprehend us---even lip service is progress.

How kind of our master to give us June as Gay Rights Month. Forget that propoganda, I say we take over the whole year and march through the streets like the angered fed up citizens that we should be. You want to mess with the organization of the Right wingers, lets spread our Pride festivals throughout the year. One for every month and through out the Nation. No matter how small or big if we make them speratic we wont need someone to designate our Pride for a one month span.

"How kind of our master to give us June as Gay Rights Month"And then let his DOJ knife us in the back during it. Nice timing. We will win our rights, with or without his administrations help. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Open your eyes people. He was paying us lip service. Nothing more. His actions show where his stance on us really is.

I can agree that he was the best candidate for the LGBT Community that was available for the job, however; we as a people can't afford to leave it up to Politicians and Lobbyists’ to do for us. The Pink Panthers live in a small community where we can't even come out to our employers or we risk losing our jobs. Our mayor did nothing to pass an ordinance that can protect our rights as citizens, yet she has the audacity to post a welcoming comment in our local LGBTQ magazine welcoming gay people to our pride festival. (I'm pretty sure she was not the first to do this, how many of you see politicians at Pride, yet they forget your existance when its over?) They are all a bunch of hypocrites telling you what they think you want to hear in order to pass through their own agendas. In some cases we are just buying power, whether for or against, they use us to proclaim the majority. It's time we fight for ourselves.

While scruitinzing Obama with some magical ability to interpret the intentions of a man we've never met is a lot of fun and so very self distructive, we have just ridded ourselves of one of the most war insipiring recession master from HELL.If the time limit is to wrap all that up is now, then he is sure to dissapoint. In this amount of time is probably a good time to spend wasted hours disecting a man who address GBLT people at all. Great idea. Let's throw his wife in for not carring a rainbow flag, or getting a gay dog? So many GLBT people don't vote. They demanize presidents even when making shit up works. It would be tragic to play an old tape again the shot our own foot in our history. Martin Luther King spoke against a country, not a man. In fact he urged his people to define themselves as Americans knowing that even when the counrtry did not want equal rights they had to because his people weren't going anywhere. That's us displaying Unity. If we want it SOOO bad, act like it. The president has to address every abomindable act Bush accomplished for years. We're just so smart about his 'lies' in 6 months. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Yes Obama has a lot on his plate, and yet HIS administration had the time to file a brief in support of DOMA, which he said he opposed. That's more than just "not getting around to it." That's a direct contradiction. Sorry. I'm not allowing the Pres any excuses. But things like this are why I got into JoinTheImpact in the first place. It's up to us, not the politicians, to win our rights. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Hi Marcus! I agree you! You certainly have the right to to crticize. Me too.I used some points that I expressed obnoxiously and that's a terrible way to come across. I wasn't addressing Marcus whatsoever. I joined Impact because I am equally as concerned as any GLBT person is. So criticize away. Oh, no need for an appology about what you do and don't allow excuses to. Like you, I have strong opinions too and still can listen to you. I appologized fhat you felt you had to defend yourself.
