Hi allA local org (Love Honor Cherish aka repealprop8.org) has come up with some creative ways to raise funds for equality. We recently had a chocolate tasting event - chocolate martinis, gourmet chocolates, and lots of yummie chocolate cakes another group in town had a bingo night at a local lgbt friendly restaurant (which donated a portion of dinner proceeds) Now we've planned (in conjunction with Pride) Beer Pong for Equality $20 | Saturday, June 13, 2009 | 8pm to 12am 9029 1/4 Rangely Ave | West Hollywood, CA 90048 Please RSVP on facebook, email to krissysob@gmail.com, or call 310-971-8088 for more information. http://www.facebook.com/inbox/readmessage.php?t=86561475679&f=1&e=0#/event.php?eid=87161237903 and Equality Brunch $30 | Saturday, June 13, 2009 | 10am to 12pm 9029 1/4 Rangely Ave | West Hollywood, CA 90048 Please RSVP facebook, email to krissysob@gmail.com, or call 310-971-8088 for more information. http://www.facebook.com/inbox/readmessage.php?t=86561475679&f=1&e=0#/event.php?eid=101757217268 Anyone want more info? check the website, the facebook pages listed above, or feel free to send me a message Who says fundraising for equality has to be boring? If you're doing brunch and beer please make sure to use products from HRC buyers guide. I'd like to see our ally straight married couples who sometimes ask for donations to a charity in lieu of wedding gifts asking for donations made to HRC so that their friends/family can someday share the joy they have. Perhaps HRC store and others could great a wedding registry ;-) Another idea is to have raffles for a trip to .... any of the states that offer SSM. I'm sure you could get things like hotel or B&B etc donated. We need numbers and lots of couples can't afford to go. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

The problem with going through HRC is that they are lobbyist. Joe Solmonese is a straight man who fights for secular humanism first and LGBT issues second. Their main concern is to lobby for all Human Rights and frankly we are not on their proirity list. They bargain our rights according to their own agenda. They are a corporation like so many others. We as a community have put all our efforts and funding into the HRC instead of organizing an LGBT owned and opperated campaign. Were letting straight people speak upon our struggle. Mind you there are LGBT grassroots organizers at the foot of HRC but who leads and speaks for us is not LGBT. Its time we speak for ourselves. Its time we fight for ourselves. We don't need HRC, We don't need the Black Community to guide us through our oppression, we just need each other. If we fight as one we can overtake the straight homophobic populas.

What's wrong with starting our own. You can't complain about the world if your not ready to be a part of changing it. It's time we get organized. Google search does not offer the answer to life. We need to get organized, we need to gather all the grassroots organization in America for a conference and discuss OUR issues. We need to find leadership within our own and fight. We need to fund and inform the community of this leader and see how one person can motivate a populace. The Pink Panthers feel that our grassroots leaders have lost hope, we need a leader to find the spark from within. We as a people have a lot of misinformed children and leaders who are not motivated enough to fight one more time. The time is now to get our message across just as the religous right does against us. It's time to educate!2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

This is just me, not policy or anything, I'm one who in a time of emergency is not in favor of reinventing the wheel. And just because you can't find it on Google does not mean the group is not there. We can't Twitter our way to equality, this is going to take actual work. And as of today you've got a million + who don't even have TV, mostly seniors, elderly ... we as a group are going to have to step away from the computer, put down the iPhone and get off our lazy buts and do actual work. Breaking news: not everything or everyone is online. Small groups, local liberal churches, student groups, don't have the time or funds to have or update their website, they're too busy actually DOING something. Get involved in your local community and find who's doing something and jump in. Hey, maybe they need someone to update their website. One thing we must do is vote the rascals out. Check the Victory fund and find out who's running even for local dog catcher. We have midterm elections we must win. Starting a voter registration drive costs nothing. Those of you doing events my hat's off to you. Make sure at every single brunch, dinner, silent auction .... make damn sure there are voter registration forms. If there is a local gay/gay friendly candidate invite them to speak. Find a local gay or gay friendly candidate and ask what they need done or volunteer your expertise. Those of us employed if your job offers pre-tax charitable giving make damn sure that group is gay family friendly and if not change your donation direction. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Treknott - great ideas! In CA right now there are lots of grass roots groups - some of which have sister groups in other states - where you can get involved and see the change you're creating. If you don't go for HRC, try the ACLU's LGBT project (hey, you KNOW they're all about civil rights) or Stonewall Democrats (lgbt Democrats) or PFLAG or talk to your local Gay/Lesbian Center Jane 4 out of 4 found this valuable. At 87 my Mom still collates, delivers the local antiwar press and makes sure it's distributed at local progressive businesses. She and local activists stand vigil every week against the war. This is the kind of work that ended the Vietnam war, it's the kind of work that created the Civil Rights movement both of which our family was a part of. We can't Twitter our way to our rights, we can't eat our way to our rights at dinners and brunches. This is the kind of work it takes every day and for all our lives. Log off and get to &^% work. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

"No, but twitter and facebook do get the word out about actions - like emailing and calling your Senators to 1. pass the Matthew Shephard bill to protect lgbt ppl from hate crimes 2. pass S 424 Uniting American Families Act so lgbt ppl can sponsor their foreign born partners/spouses for residency 3. overturn Don't Ask Don't Tell so lgbt can openly serve in the military 4. overturn Defence of Marriage Act so married lgbt can receive 1138 federal marriage benefits (http://bit.ly/BTXqP to find their contact info) And emailing and calling your Reps to 1. pass HR 1283 to overturn Don't Ask Don't Tell 2. pass HR 1024 Uniting American Families Act 3. overturn Defense of Marriage Act (http://bit.ly/uJOp7 to find their contact info) Then, contact one of the groups I posted before - or an lgbt candidate or another group - and get involved in voter registration, canvasing, phone banking, or whatever. It's especially important for those in communities of faith (churches, synagogues, temples, etc.) to come out to those communities) Jane 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Hi allI have another idea for fund raising but have two issues, one, I am not sure which would be the best organization to donate it to. There are lots of organizations who want donations but my heart rings out the the GLBT community. I need to pick an organization and at the same time, I need that organization to vouch for me. I can't sell it to others without the creditbility. Double edge sword! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I'm not sure if I should post this here or start my own thread......so i'll start here first. I make personalized embroidery items. I do a lot of pink ribbon and autism awareness items for kids to wear at rallies and auction and fundraisers.....I would like to expand and include rainbow and red ribbon awareness items......is this something that people might be interested in or is it all readily available already? samples of my work are at simplyadorableboutique.com THANKS for your input! :)

I am so glad you added a great idea for such creative project, 4myfriends! What a great way to show our creative enthusiasm to a world that picks such a narrow definition of who we are. AND Iove the bingo and chocolate tasting event. What a great way to show an aim for ALL equality since we all still need to eat, have fun, and celebrate diversity.

Yeah, Jane!!!! The more we operate from an 'Us" and 'them" perspective, the farther we get from the apparent goal of unity. Don't get me wrong, righteous rage is a great way to pas the time. I've enjoyed every physical side effect from it. But just to be novel, why not give a shot at being as welcoming to change as we are to demand it.
